Adopting an African Standpoint in HCI4D::A Provocation

    Get PDF
While studies in HCI4D have been advanced by the shift of perspective from developmental studies to a range of other discourses, current analytical concepts for understanding the sociality of society in Africa have arguably led to some misinterpretations of the place of technology. This provocation suggests that an ‘African Standpoint’ based on a combination of various standpoint positionalities and the Wittgensteinian approach of Winch can offer conceptual and analytical sensitivities for articulating social relations, transnational engagements and the conceptualisation of technological innovation. This provides an approach for seeing and accounting for things as they are – right here, right there and right now – and not some idealised conception of an African reality

This paper aims to identify different theories that guide methods of studying the influence of cultural diversity on users' experience with design products. To this end, a systematic review of the literature, comprising 80 academic papers in the scope of design for cultural diversity is carried out. The central procedure of the work unfolds in the classification and analysis of these papers. The study identifies the recurrent use of some methods of cultural analysis, indicating the tendency of research in the area to develop as cross-cultural comparisons – or transcultural studies. Other models, such as multicultural or intercultural studies, are recent and still scarce. The results obtained also point to the predominance of the North America/Europe axis as motivators of research in the area, in addition to highlighting the lower number of those that focus on the Latin America/Africa axis.

Moderating Role of Long-term Orientation on Augmented Reality Adoption

Recently, the tourism and hospitality industry is providing tourists with an enhanced experience via various cutting-edge technologies such as augmented reality (AR). In addition, there has been an increased interest on the effects of cultural traits on human behaviours. The aim of this paper is to examine how Long- and Short-term orientation moderates the relationship between experience economy provided by AR applications and users’ perceived value. Data were collected from 145 participants at Deoksugung Palace in Seoul, South Korea and 119 participants at An Post Museum, Dublin, Ireland. We found that South Korean tourists, who are representatives of long-term orientation culture in this study, put a high value on educational factors of AR applications, whereas Irish tourists, who are representative of short-term orientation culture, regard escapist experiences of AR applications highly

Who Is (Communicatively More) Responsible Behind the Wheel? Applying the Theory of Communicative Responsibility to TAM in the Context of Using Navigation Technology

    Get PDF
By examining how perceived usefulness and ease of use relate to the user’s perception (i.e., communicative responsibility), the communicative behavior of the navigation system (i.e., the landmarks used to give directions), and the context of driving (i.e., familiarity of the driving location), this study applies the theory of communicative responsibility to the technology acceptance model to better understand why users are more likely to adopt certain navigation technologies while driving. We hypothesized that users’ perceived symmetry in communicative responsibility independently and interactively (with communicative behavior of the navigation system and the driving situation) affects perceived ease of use and usefulness of the navigation system. Consequently, the perceived ease of use and usefulness may affect the user’s intention to use the navigation system. This study found that usefulness was a significant predictor of behavioral intention. While driving in a less familiar location, the drivers perceived the navigation system to be more useful. When the navigation system provided location-specific landmarks, such as the name of a local store, drivers who attributed more communicative responsibility to the system were likely to find it useful

Diversity as creativity : systematic review of creative methods for managing culture in design processes

The present work investigates the theoretical orientations of creative methods in design processes for the management of cultural diversity. To this end, a systematic review of the literature is carried out, comprising papers in the scope of design for cultural diversity, with emphasis on creative methods and tools. The results obtained indicate the predominance of practices oriented to transcultural design, where cultural diversity is treated as an obstacle to be overcome or just as a source of indirect creative reference. It was also identified the growing presence of methods oriented towards intercultural design, where diversity is considered an essential active component for the production of creativity. Finally, this paper proposes a discussion about the epistemological orientation of each method and how these debates reflect advances in the theoretical and practical field of design

Complexity, design and culture: convergences for digital experiences

    Get PDF
The design of digital experiences and sociotechnical solutions in the contemporary society is characterized by increasing complexity. More and more variables are present and unpredictable effects are observed. The complexity of systems calls for increased awareness and problem-solving abilities. In this survey, design in general, and design of the user experience in particular, is positioned in the scope of complexity. Moreover, the design reasoning and methods are framed by culturally determined factors and cognitive styles. This survey aims to converge complexity and complex problem solving, design of the user experience, and cultural variations, reviewing bodies of work to inspire and map interdependencies that shape future challenges in systems and experience design.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

No More ‘Solutionism’ or ‘Saviourism’ in Futuring African HCI:A Manyfesto

    Get PDF
Research in HCI4D has continuously advanced a narrative of ‘lacks’ and ‘gaps’ of the African perspective in technoscience. In response to such misguided assumptions, this paper attempts to reformulate the common and perhaps unfortunate thinking about African practices of design in HCI4D – i.e., largely as a function of African societal predicaments and Western technocratic resolutions. Through critical reflection on a range of issues associated with post-colonialism and post-development, I examine the possibilities that various historical tropes might offer to the reinvention of the African perspective on innovation. This leads to the consideration of how engaging in critical discussions about the future dimensions of African HCI can allow for grappling with the effect of the coloniality of being, power and knowledge. Developing on the ideas of futuring as a way of dealing with the complexities of the present – in this case the coloniality of the imagination - the paper ends by discussing three tactical propositions for ‘remembering’ future identities of African innovation where the values of autonomy are known and acted upon

Cultural impacts on web: An empirical comparison of interactivity in websites of South Korea and the United Kingdom

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel UniversityThis thesis explores cultural differences on interactive design features used in websites of South Korea and the United Kingdom from the perspective of both: professional website designers and end-users. It also investigates how the use of interactive design features from different cultures change over time. Four interaction types on websites; User to Interface (U2I), User to Content (U2C), User to Provider (U2P), and User to User (U2U) interactivity, and three interaction types on blogs; Blogger to Interface (B2I), Blogger to Content (B2C) and Blogger to Blogger (B2B) interactivity have been identified. Four cultural dimensions were used for the theoretical base of this study based on which four hypotheses were proposed in relation to the interaction types identified above; (a) High versus Low Context cultures for U2I, (b) High versus Low Uncertainty Avoidance for U2C, (c) High versus Low Power Distance for U2P and (d) Individualism versus Collectivism for U2U interactivity, in order to discover the effects of national cultures on interactivity in websites. We derived our own interactivity dimensions and mapped them to the four interaction types for websites and three for blogs. Interactive design features were derived from interactivity dimensions and examined in our studies. The findings revealed that there have been some changes towards homogeneity in the use of interactive design features on charity websites between South Korea and United Kingdom although there is still evidence of some cultural differences. With regard to end-users’ perspective, the result show that the use of interactive design features of blogs may be influenced by culture but this is only within a certain context. The findings also provide a valuable indication that users interacting within the same blog service can be considered as being shared concerns rather than shared national location, thus create a particular type of community in which bloggers are affected by social influence so they adopt a shared set of value, preferences and style that would indicate almost a common social culture. As a result, the cultural differences derived from their country of origin do not have that much impact
