CONFIGURABLE PROCESS MODELS: EXPERIENCES FROM A MEDICAL AND AN ADMINISTRATIVE CASE STUDY

    Get PDF
Reference (process) models are conceptual models that illustrate generic solutions for a certain domain. However, the generic concept of the reference process models requires the adaption of these process models to the demands of the individual customers. The concept of configurable process models is a step forwards towards this adaptation. Configurable process models integrate different variants of a business process into a single model. The deviation of an individual process model from a reference model can be seen as a variant of that reference model. While a technique for such models was already suggested in previous research, this paper presents two case studies in which this technique was tested in real-world scenarios. We sourced our material from a project at a middlesized hospital introducing “clinical pathways”, and from our own university documenting the “student-life-cycle”. For each of these projects we identified the variants including all of the variation points. The variation points mark the differences between the variants. After modeling, each identified set of variants was integrated into a configurable process model and these models were configured accordingly. This paper reports on both the observation during the model creation and the subsequent configuration

Towards a comprehensive key performance indicators reference model for non-medical support services / facility management in hospitals

In healthcare, so far few data have been processed in terms of controlling and benchmarking of non-medical support services and their costs. With the introduction of case-based rate systems and increasing cost pressure situations in the healthcare sector, the need for cost allocation controlling, key performance indicators (KPI), benchmarking and a well-founded basis for strategic decisions has grown rapidly in Facility Management (FM) in healthcare. In order to provide a holistic and practically oriented solution, it was necessary to assess the requirements of the different KPI specifications of the various non-medical support services in hospitals. On the conceptual basis of the Service Catalogue for non-medical Support Services in Hospitals, the development of a KPI model was conducted in iterative interview sessions with different subject matter experts for FM in hospitals. The result is the setup of a systematic metamodel as the basis for a comprehensive KPI Reference Model for non-medical Support Services / FM in Hospitals providing the basis not only for controlling and benchmarking steps, but also for the development of corresponding adjustments of account plans and cost center accounting, as well as for aligning IT architectures

Designing a Reference Model for Digital Product Configurators

    Get PDF
Since the manufacturing industry is nowadays facing increasingly heterogeneous customer requirements, digital product configurators (DPC) have become a popular means for integrating customers into organizational value creation. DPC are information systems, which serve as a frontend to the customer and enable the individualization of products. The design of such a DPC is time consuming, expensive and lacks appropriate models offering guidance for its development. The paper at hand addresses these issues by providing a reference model (RM) for DPC development. The model has been constructed by means of an extensive literature review and was subsequently demonstrated and evaluated in a real world scenario. In order to ensure a flexible and individual development of company specific DPC the RM includes adaptation mechanisms. Therefore, our research provides a first building block to the endeavor of facilitating or even automating DPC development

A Reference Process Model for IT Service Management

Within the recent years the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is increasingly used for the description and delivery of ITservices and can be regarded as a de-facto standard for IT Service Management. However, ITIL is a common practice approach without an explicit process definition which leaves many degrees of freedom. This paper presents the advancement to a reference model for the processes of IT Service Management and shows the integration into a comprehensive process framework for IT management

The Challenge of Energy Management – Status-Quo and Perspectives for Reference Models

Energy management is one of the great challenges of the industry in the next years. Energy becomes more and more to a critical resource. Until now, enterprises need to implement energy management system with nearly no guidance. In the following paper we present the foundation of a reference model-based method that serves for setting up energy management systems in various industrial sectors. The goal is to support reduction emission and cost reduction as well as certification needs. In contrast to previous approaches, this approach enables a model-based certification and allows an automation of activities of the process of supervision of the consumption of energy and the appropriate reengineering of business processes
