Are We Making Progress In Visualization Research?
In this work, I use a survey of senior visualization researchers and thinkers
to ideate about the notion of progress in visualization research: how are we
growing as a field, what are we building towards, and are our existing methods
sufficient to get us there? My respondents discussed several potential
challenges for visualization research in terms of knowledge formation: a lack
of rigor in the methods used, a lack of applicability to actual communities of
practice, and a lack of theoretical structures that incorporate everything that
happens to people and to data both before and after the few seconds when a
viewer looks at a value in a chart. Orienting the field around progress (if
such a thing is even desirable, which is another point of contention) I believe
will require drastic re-conceptions of what the field is, what it values, and
how it is taught
Two Categories of Refutation Decision Procedures for Classical and Intuitionistic Propositional Logic
An automatic theorem prover is a computer program that proves theorems without the assistance of a human being. Theorem proving is an important basic tool in proving theorems in mathematics, establishing the correctness of computer programs, proving the correctness of communication protocols, and verifying integrated circuit designs. This dissertation introduces two new categories of theorem provers, one for classical propositional logic and another for intuitionistic propositional logic. For each logic a container property and generalized algorithm are introduced. Many methods have been developed over the years to prove theorems in propositional logic. This dissertation describes and presents example proofs for five of these methods: natural deduction, Kripke tableau, analytic tableau, matrix, and resolution. Each of these methods uses refutation to prove a theorem. In refutation, the proposed theorem is assumed to be false. The theorem prover is successful, only if the analysis of this assumption leads to a contradiction. Each of these methods, except resolution, share a common algorithm. To prove this, the container is introduced. A data structure used by a method is a container, if it meets a set of properties. A generalized algorithm that proves theorems is introduced. Since each step in this algorithm uses only operations that are provided by the container. The steps it performs can be translated to any method that can be described using a container. This allows the data structures representing a partial proof in one method, to be transformed into the data structures representing the “same ” proof in another method. This can be very beneficial in a situation where another method would be more efficient in advancing the proof. In addition to being able to switch between methods, an heuristic for one method can be examined to see if it can be applied to the other methods. This development is repeated for intuitionistic logic. Each of these methods, except resolution, is modified to prove theorems in intuitionistic logic. An intuitionistic container is presented. Each one of the intuitionistic methods is proven to have the properties of the intuitionistic container. Lastly, a generalized algorithm using the intuitionistic container is presented. This algorithm proves theorems in intuitionistic logic. Examples showing successful and unsuccessful proof attempts are presented
Factors Influencing Customer Satisfaction towards E-shopping in Malaysia
Online shopping or e-shopping has changed the world of business and quite a few people have
decided to work with these features. What their primary concerns precisely and the responses from
the globalisation are the competency of incorporation while doing their businesses. E-shopping has
also increased substantially in Malaysia in recent years. The rapid increase in the e-commerce
industry in Malaysia has created the demand to emphasize on how to increase customer satisfaction
while operating in the e-retailing environment. It is very important that customers are satisfied with
the website, or else, they would not return. Therefore, a crucial fact to look into is that companies
must ensure that their customers are satisfied with their purchases that are really essential from the ecommerce’s
point of view. With is in mind, this study aimed at investigating customer satisfaction
towards e-shopping in Malaysia. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed among students
randomly selected from various public and private universities located within Klang valley area.
Total 369 questionnaires were returned, out of which 341 questionnaires were found usable for
further analysis. Finally, SEM was employed to test the hypotheses. This study found that customer
satisfaction towards e-shopping in Malaysia is to a great extent influenced by ease of use, trust,
design of the website, online security and e-service quality. Finally, recommendations and future
study direction is provided.

Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud
Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations. Our algorithms can serve as prototypes in the development of novel MR simulation algorithms for large-scale lattice-based a-life models.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/scs_books/1014/thumbnail.jp
Rescripting Stalinist masculinity: contesting the male ideal in Soviet film and society, 1953-1968
This dissertation traces the evolution of a new type of cinematic masculinity in the fifteen years following Joseph Stalin's death and examines how controversial post-Stalinist movie heroes became a battleground for the country's postwar values and ideals. During the 1950s and 1960s, postwar Soviet leadership faced the kinds of sociopolitical ruptures that were also evident on the other side of the Iron Curtain; the Communist Party leadership struggled to moderate the combined destabilizing effect of consumerism, a recalcitrant youth (sub)culture, and Cold War anxieties. Nowhere was the angst of the postwar period more obvious than in the way Soviet filmmakers portrayed their movie heroes. Unlike their hard-bodied and zealous Stalinist counterparts, post-Stalinist protagonists conveyed physical imperfection and ideological ambivalence. Stalin's successor, Nikita Khrushchev initially promoted the turn to more realistic protagonists as part of his de-Stalinization campaign. His inconsistent and unclear policies, however, gave filmmakers the leeway to project a post-Stalinist vision that went beyond Khrushchev's agenda. For a group of the nation's major filmmakers, the struggle to define post-Stalinist masculinity therefore represented a self-conscious mission to discredit the system's reliance on rigid dogma, moral conservatism, and suffocating collectivism. In an ironic twist, reformist filmmakers took advantage of the Soviet leadership's intention to humanize the Communist system and turned it into a broader conversation about the system's ethical and political principles. My dissertation demonstrates the indispensability of masculine images to the state's propaganda mission and identifies the processes that governed the production of gendered images within a censorship regime. I also reveal the porousness of Cold War borders by analyzing the momentous effect of American and West European cinema on Soviet filmmakers. Moreover, this research identifies the critical influence peripheral East European regimes exercised on the Soviet center. Moscow's aggressive assimilation of so-called satellites ironically allowed Czech and Polish experimental cinematography to act as a conduit for liberal ideals. Overall, the interdisciplinary and transnational approach I employ allows me to go beyond the Cold War flashpoints of the 1950s and 1960s, to reveal a society engaged with the outside world and engrossed in a public renegotiation of its collective identity
Putting Chinese natural knowledge to work in an eighteenth-century Swiss canton: the case of Dr Laurent Garcin
Symposium: S048 - Putting Chinese natural knowledge to work in the long eighteenth centuryThis paper takes as a case study the experience of the eighteenth-century Swiss physician, Laurent Garcin (1683-1752), with Chinese medical and pharmacological knowledge. A Neuchâtel bourgeois of Huguenot origin, who studied in Leiden with Hermann Boerhaave, Garcin spent nine years (1720-1729) in South and Southeast Asia as a surgeon in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Upon his return to Neuchâtel in 1739 he became primus inter pares in the small local community of physician-botanists, introducing them to the artificial sexual system of classification. He practiced medicine, incorporating treatments acquired during his travels. taught botany, collected rare plants for major botanical gardens, and contributed to the Journal Helvetique on a range of topics; he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, where two of his papers were read in translation and published in the Philosophical Transactions; one of these concerned the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), leading Linnaeus to name the genus Garcinia after Garcin. He was likewise consulted as an expert on the East Indies, exotic flora, and medicines, and contributed to important publications on these topics.
During his time with the Dutch East India Company Garcin encountered Chinese medical practitioners whose work he evaluated favourably as being on a par with that of the Brahmin physicians, whom he particularly esteemed. Yet Garcin never went to China, basing his entire experience of Chinese medical practice on what he witnessed in the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia (the ‘East Indies’). This case demonstrates that there were myriad routes to Europeans developing an understanding of Chinese natural knowledge; the Chinese diaspora also afforded a valuable opportunity for comparisons of its knowledge and practice with other non-European bodies of medical and natural (e.g. pharmacological) knowledge.postprin
