    A Robust Control for Five-level Inverter Based on Integral Sliding Mode Control

    This paper presents a new control strategy for cascaded H-bridge five-level inverter (CHB-5LI) based on the novel sliding mode control (NSMC). The proposed method can generate pulse-width modulation (PWM) without using conventional modulation techniques based on carrier waves. With the proposed NSMC technique, the PWM pulses can be obtained by the control signal u(t) from the output of the sliding mode controller and the levels of comparison. To eliminate the chattering and increase the speed convergence of the controller, the integral sliding-mode surface combined with a first-order low-pass filter (LPF) is used. The stability of the control system is validated by Lyapunov theory. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed NSMC method has strong robustness, and better performance for multi-level inverter control systems with low total harmonic distortion, Common-Mode (CM) voltage reduction, switching frequency diminution, and less switching loss

    An Application of Modified T2FHC Algorithm in Two-Link Robot Controller

    Parallel robotic systems have shown their advantages over the traditional serial robots such as high payload capacity, high speed, and high precision. Their applications are widespread from transportation to manufacturing fields. Therefore, most of the recent studies in parallel robots focus on finding the best method to improve the system accuracy. Enhancing this metric, however, is still the biggest challenge in controlling a parallel robot owing to the complex mathematical model of the system. In this paper, we present a novel solution to this problem with a Type 2 Fuzzy Coherent Controller Network (T2FHC), which is composed of a Type 2 Cerebellar Model Coupling Controller (CMAC) with its fast convergence ability and a Brain Emotional Learning Controller (BELC) using the Lyaponov-based weight updating rule. In addition, the T2FHC is combined with a surface generator to increase the system flexibility. To evaluate its applicability in real life, the proposed controller was tested on a Quanser 2-DOF robot system in three case studies: no load, 180 g load and 360 g load, respectively. The results showed that the proposed structure achieved superior performance compared to those of available algorithms such as CMAC and Novel Self-Organizing Fuzzy CMAC (NSOF CMAC). The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) index of the system that was 2.20E-06 for angle A and 2.26E-06 for angle B and the tracking error that was -6.42E-04 for angle A and 2.27E-04 for angle B demonstrate the good stability and high accuracy of the proposed T2FHC. With this outstanding achievement, the proposed method is promising to be applied to many applications using nonlinear systems

    A new reaching law for anti-disturbance sliding-mode control of PMSM speed regulation system

    In this paper, in order to optimize the dynamic performance of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) speed regulation system, a nonlinear speed-control algorithm for the PMSM control systems using sliding-mode control (SMC) is developed. First, a sliding-mode control method based on a new sliding-mode reaching law (NSMRL) is proposed. This NSMRL includes the system state variable and the power term of sliding surface function. In particular, the power term is bounded by the absolute value of the switching function, so that the reaching law can be expressed in two different forms during the reaching process. This method can not only effectively suppresses the inherent chattering, but also increases the velocity of the system state reaching to the sliding-mode surface. Based on this new reaching law, a sliding-mode speed controller (SMSC) of PMSM is designed. Then, considering the large chattering phenomenon caused by high switching gain, an improved anti-disturbance sliding-mode speed controller(ADSMSC) method, called SMSC+ESO method, is developed. This method introduces an extended state observer (ESO) to observe the lumped disturbance and adds a feedforward compensation item based on the observed disturbances to the SMSC. Finally, simulation and experimental results both show the validity of the proposed control method

    ROBUST FAULT ANALYSIS FOR PERMANENT MAGNET DC MOTOR IN SAFETY CRITICAL APPLICATIONS

    Robust fault analysis (FA) including the diagnosis of faults and predicting their level of severity is necessary to optimise maintenance and improve reliability of Aircraft. Early diagnosis of faults that might occur in the supervised process renders it possible to perform important preventative actions. The proposed diagnostic models were validated in two experimental tests. The first test concerned a single localised and generalised roller element bearing fault in a permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motor. Rolling element bearing defect is one of the main reasons for breakdown in electrical machines. Vibration and current are analysed under stationary and non-stationary load and speed conditions, for a variety of bearing fault severities, and for both local and global bearing faults. The second test examined the case of an unbalance rotor due to blade faults in a thruster, motor based on a permanent magnet brushed DC (PMBDC) motor. A variety of blade fault conditions were investigated, over a wide range of rotation speeds. The test used both discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to extract the useful features, and then feature reduction techniques to avoid redundant features. This reduces computation requirements and the time taken for classification by the application of an orthogonal fuzzy neighbourhood discriminant analysis (OFNDA) approach. The real time monitoring of motor operating conditions is an advanced technique that presents the real performance of the motor, so that the dynamic recurrent neural network (DRNN) proposed predicts the conditions of components and classifies the different faults under different operating conditions. The results obtained from real time simulation demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed methodology in accurately classifying faults and predicting levels of fault severity.the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Researc

    Type-2 Fuzzy Hybrid Controller Network for Robotic Systems

    Dynamic control, including robotic control, faces both the theoretical challenge of obtaining accurate system models and the practical difficulty of defining uncertain system bounds. To facilitate such challenges, this paper proposes a control system consisting of a novel type of fuzzy neural network and a robust compensator controller. The new fuzzy neural network is implemented by integrating a number of key components embedded in a Type-2 fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and a brain emotional learning controller (BELC) network, thereby mimicking an ideal sliding mode controller. The system inputs are fed into the neural network through a Type-2 fuzzy inference system (T2FIS), with the results subsequently piped into sensory and emotional channels which jointly produce the final outputs of the network. That is, the proposed network estimates the nonlinear equations representing the ideal sliding mode controllers using a powerful compensator controller with the support of T2FIS and BELC, guaranteeing robust tracking of the dynamics of the controlled systems. The adaptive dynamic tuning laws of the network are developed by exploiting the popular brain emotional learning rule and the Lyapunov function. The proposed system was applied to a robot manipulator and a mobile robot, demonstrating its efficacy and potential; and a comparative study with alternatives indicates a significant improvement by the proposed system in performing the intelligent dynamic control

    Fault Diagnosis of HVDC Systems Using Machine Learning Based Methods

    With the development of high-power electronic technology, HVDC system is applied in the power system because of advantages in large-capacity and long-distance transmission, stability, and flexibility. Therefore, as the guarantee of reliable operating of HVDC system, fault diagnosis of the HVDC system is of great significance. In the current variety methods used in fault diagnosis, Machine Learning based methods have become a hotspot. To this end, the performance of several commonly used machine learning classifiers is compared in HVDC system. First of all, nine faults both in AC systems and DC systems of the HVDC system are set in the HVDC model in Simulink. Therefore, 10 operating states corresponding to the faults and normal operating are considered as the output classes of classifier. Seven parameters, such as DC voltage and DC current, are selected as fault feature parameters of each sample. By simulating the HVDC system in 10 operating states (including normal operating state) correspondingly, 20000 samples, each containing seven parameters, be obtained during the fault period. Then, the training sample set and the test sample set are established by 80% and 20% of the whole sample set. Subsequently, Decision Trees, the Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighborhood Classifier (KNN), Ensemble classifiers, Discriminant Analysis, Backward Propagation Neural Network (BP-NN), long Short-Term Memory Neural Network (LSTM-NN), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) was trained and tested. The accuracy of testing is used as the performance index of the model. In particular, for BP-NN, the impact of different transfer functions and learning rules combinations on the accuracy of the model was tested. For ELM, the impact of different activation functions on accuracy is tested. The results have shown that ELM and Bagged Trees have the best performance in HVDC fault diagnosis. The accuracy of these two methods are 92.23% and 96.5% respectively. However, in order to achieve better accuracy in ELM model, a large number of hidden layer nodes are set so that training time increases sharply
