Beacons of Excellence in Stress Prevention
NoThis report describes the work of Robertson Cooper Ltd and UMIST to identify good practice in stress
prevention and then identify organisations within the UK that could be called beacons of excellence in
comparison to this model. Part one of this report summarises and draws conclusions from all of the
substantive academic studies on stress prevention over the last decade and uses this information, as
well as advice gained from a panel of international experts, to develop a comprehensive stress
prevention model. Part two of the report uses this model to describe examples of stress prevention
practices that Robertson Cooper Ltd has identified within a wide range of UK organisations. Case
studies are presented for each aspect of the good practice model. Examples of real documentation and

Developing an Intervention Toolbox for the Common Health Problems in the Workplace
Development of the Health ↔ Work Toolbox is described. The toolbox aims to reduce the workplace impact of common health problems (musculoskeletal, mental health, and stress complaints) by focusing on tackling work-relevant symptoms. Based on biopsychosocial principles this toolbox supplements current approaches by occupying the zone between primary prevention and healthcare. It provides a set of evidence-informed principles and processes (knowledge + tools) for tackling work-relevant common health problems. The toolbox comprises a proactive element aimed at empowering line managers to create good jobs, and a ‘just in time’ responsive element for supporting individuals struggling with a work-relevant health problem. The key intention is helping people with common health problems to maintain work participation. The extensive conceptual and practical development process, including a comprehensive evidence review, produced a functional prototype toolbox that is evidence based and flexible in its use. End-user feedback was mostly positive. Moving the prototype to a fully-fledged internet resource requires specialist design expertise. The Health ↔ Work Toolbox appears to have potential to contribute to the goal of augmenting existing primary prevention strategies and healthcare delivery by providing a more comprehensive workplace approach to constraining sickness absence
Burnout in the Workplace: A Review of the Data and Policy Responses in the EU
This report looks at the extent of burnout experienced by workers in the EU, based on national research. As a starting point, the report sets out to consider whether burnout is viewed as a medical or occupational disease. It then examines the work determinants associated with burnout and looks at the effects of burnout, including psychosocial and physical work factors, work intensity and work organisation. It also reviews national strategies and policies regarding this issue, the involvement of the social partners in the current debate, as well as preventive actions currently in place
Effects of a psychoeducational intervention for direct care workers caring for people with dementia: results from a 6-month follow-up study
YesThis study aimed to assess the effects of a psycho-educational intervention, designed to improve direct care workers’ stress, burnout and job satisfaction and person-centered communicative behavior with people with dementia. A pretest-posttest control group design was conducted in four aged-care facilities. Two experimental facilities received a psycho-educational intervention; two control facilities received an education-only. Data were gathered from fifty three care workers at baseline, immediately and six months after the intervention, through self-administrated instruments and video-recorded morning care sessions.
The experimental group showed a significant decrease in care workers’ burnout and a significant improvement in several communicative behaviors (e.g., involvement). Stress levels deteriorated at six months and no intervention effects were found for job satisfaction. The findings highlight the importance of providing care workers with both technical competences and tools for stress management as this might be associated with a reduction of their levels of exhaustion and improved communicative behaviors.Foundation for Science and Technolog

Smart workplaces: a system proposal for stress management
Over the past last decades of contemporary society, workplaces
have become the primary source of many health issues, leading
to mental problems such as stress, depression, and anxiety.
Among the others, environmental aspects have shown to be the
causes of stress, illness, and lack of productivity. With the arrival
of new technologies, especially in the smart workplaces field,
most studies have focused on investigating the building energy
efficiency models and human thermal comfort. However, little has
been applied to occupants’ stress recognition and well-being
overall. Due to this fact, this present study aims to propose a
stress management solution for an interactive design system that
allows the adapting of comfortable environmental conditions
according to the user preferences by measuring in real-time the
environmental and biological characteristics, thereby helping to
prevent stress, as well as to enable users to cope stress when
being stressed. The secondary objective will focus on evaluating
one part of the system: the mobile application. The proposed
system uses several usability methods to identify users’ needs,
behavior, and expectations from the user-centered design
approach. Applied methods, such as User Research, Card
Sorting, and Expert Review, allowed us to evaluate the design
system according to Heuristics Analysis, resulting in improved
usability of interfaces and experience. The study presents the
research results, the design interface, and usability tests.
According to the User Research results, temperature and noise
are the most common environmental stressors among the users
causing stress and uncomfortable conditions to work in, and the
preference for physical activities over the digital solutions for
coping with stress. Additionally, the System Usability Scale (SUS)
results identified that the system’s usability was measured as
“excellent” and “acceptable” with a final score of 88 points out of
the 100. It is expected that these conclusions can contribute to
future investigations in the smart workplaces study field and their
interaction with the people placed there.Nas últimas décadas da sociedade contemporânea, o local de
trabalho tem se tornado principal fonte de muitos problemas de
saúde mental, como o stress, depressão e ansiedade. Os aspetos
ambientais têm se revelado como as causas de stress, doenças,
falta de produtividade, entre outros. Atualmente, com a chegada de
novas tecnologias, principalmente na área de locais de trabalho
inteligentes, a maioria dos estudos tem se concentrado na
investigação de modelos de eficiência energética de edifícios e
conforto térmico humano. No entanto, pouco foi aplicado ao
reconhecimento do stress dos ocupantes e ao bem-estar geral das
pessoas. Diante disso, o objetivo principal é propor um sistema de
design de gestão do stress para um sistema de design interativo que
permita adaptar as condições ambientais de acordo com as
preferências de utilizador, medindo em tempo real as características
ambientais e biológicas, auxiliando assim na prevenção de stress,
bem como ajuda os utilizadores a lidar com o stress quando estão
sob o mesmo. O segundo objetivo é desenhar e avaliar uma parte
do projeto — o protótipo da aplicação móvel através da realização
de testes de usabilidade. O sistema proposto resulta da abordagem
de design centrado no utilizador, utilizando diversos métodos de
usabilidade para identificar as necessidades, comportamentos e as
expectativas dos utilizadores. Métodos aplicados, como Pesquisa de
Usuário, Card Sorting e Revisão de Especialistas, permitiram avaliar
o sistema de design de acordo com a análise heurística, resultando
numa melhoria na usabilidade das interfaces e experiência. O
estudo apresenta os resultados da pesquisa, a interface do design e
os testes de usabilidade. De acordo com os resultados de User
Research, a temperatura e o ruído são os stressores ambientais
mais comuns entre os utilizadores, causando stresse e condições
menos favoráveis para trabalhar, igualmente existe uma preferência
por atividades físicas sobre as soluções digitais na gestão do
stresse. Adicionalmente, os resultados de System Usability Scale
(SUS) identificaram a usabilidade do sistema de design como
“excelente” e “aceitável” com pontuação final de 88 pontos em 100.
É esperado que essas conclusões possam contribuir para futuras
investigações no campo de estudo dos smart workplaces e sua
interação com os utilizadores
Individual differences, stress relevant information and recovery from surgery
The purpose of this study was to facilitate recovery from surgery by intervention designed to reduce anxiety. There were three major hypotheses tested in this study. The first hypothesis was that relaxation would render the subject more susceptible to helpful information and faciliate recovery. The second hypothesis was that stress relevant information would be more effective in facilitating recovery than information that gave a general description of the surgical procedures. The third hypothesis was that there would be an interaction between information given and coping style. The goal of the study was to facilitate patients\u27 recovery for hernia surgery by giving the information about the surgical experience;The independent variables measured the subjects\u27 state and trait anxiety and their coping styles. The STAI and modified Sentence Completion tests were administered for this purpose. Patients were classified as high or low trait anxious subjects and as Avoiders, Copers or Non-specific defenders based on the results of these instruments. The dependent variables measured the subjects\u27 perception of their pain experience, their recovery from surgery and the change in situational anxiety. The Pain Questionnaire was administered to allow the patient to assess his pain experience. Medical records were reviewed after patient discharge to obtain data on recovery. The presurgical state anxiety score was compared to the postsurgical score to ascertain the effect of the change in state anxiety on recovery;There were three types of analysis of data. First the Des Moines and St. Louis samples were compared to determine the existence of significant differences between the two groups. The second analysis compared the recovery of the four treatment conditions. A one-way analysis of variance was used for this analysis. The third analysis involved the determination of factors effecting recovery. A regression analysis was used to determine the significant factors;There were no significant differences between the four treatment groups. A regression analysis did indicate that persons receiving information irrelevant to the surgical experience were less facilitated by the information than patients who received some stress relevant information
Refinement and Preliminary Testing of an Imagery-Based Program to Improve Coping and Performance and Prevent Trauma among Urban Police Officers
Police officers are regularly exposed to traumatic critical incidents. The substantial mental, behavioral, and social costs of police trauma indicate a substantial need for prevention. We have refined and enhanced a previously tested Swedish program to the harsh conditions of U.S. inner cities. The program was designed to strengthen resilience during stressful encounters and teach methods of coping after exposure, thereby preventing the emergence of maladaptive symptoms and behaviors with adverse effects on professionalism. In an uncontrolled demonstration project, junior officers were trained by senior officers to engage in imaginal rehearsal of specific dangerous situations while incorporating optimal police tactics and healthy emotional reactions. A class of 32 officers in the police academy engaged in the program, and they and the trainers reported high satisfaction with it. After their first year of field work, 22 officers were reassessed. Compared to pre-training, these officers showed significant increases in the use of positive reframing and humor and significant reductions in anxiety and alcohol use over the year. Trauma symptoms did not increase. These results offer preliminary evidence for the feasibility and effectiveness of this trauma prevention program for new police officers
