Antennas and Electromagnetics Research via Natural Language Processing.
Advanced techniques for performing natural language processing (NLP) are being utilised to devise a pioneering methodology for collecting and analysing data derived from scientific literature. Despite significant advancements in automated database generation and analysis within the domains of material chemistry and physics, the implementation of NLP techniques in the realms of metamaterial discovery, antenna design, and wireless communications remains at its early stages. This thesis proposes several novel approaches to advance research in material science. Firstly, an NLP method has been developed to automatically extract keywords from large-scale unstructured texts in the area of metamaterial research. This enables the uncovering of trends and relationships between keywords, facilitating the establishment of future research directions. Additionally, a trained neural network model based on the encoder-decoder Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) architecture has been developed to predict future research directions and provide insights into the influence of metamaterials research. This model lays the groundwork for developing a research roadmap of metamaterials. Furthermore, a novel weighting system has been designed to evaluate article attributes in antenna and propagation research, enabling more accurate assessments of impact of each scientific publication. This approach goes beyond conventional numeric metrics to produce more meaningful predictions. Secondly, a framework has been proposed to leverage text summarisation, one of the primary NLP tasks, to enhance the quality of scientific reviews. It has been applied to review recent development of antennas and propagation for body-centric wireless communications, and the validation has been made available for comparison with well-referenced datasets for text summarisation. Lastly, the effectiveness of automated database building in the domain of tunable materials and their properties has been presented. The collected database will use as an input for training a surrogate machine learning model in an iterative active learning cycle. This model will be utilised to facilitate high-throughput material processing, with the ultimate goal of discovering novel materials exhibiting high tunability. The approaches proposed in this thesis will help to accelerate the discovery of new materials and enhance their applications in antennas, which has the potential to transform electromagnetic material research
Feature Papers in Electronic Materials Section
This book entitled "Feature Papers in Electronic Materials Section" is a collection of selected papers recently published on the journal Materials, focusing on the latest advances in electronic materials and devices in different fields (e.g., power- and high-frequency electronics, optoelectronic devices, detectors, etc.). In the first part of the book, many articles are dedicated to wide band gap semiconductors (e.g., SiC, GaN, Ga2O3, diamond), focusing on the current relevant materials and devices technology issues. The second part of the book is a miscellaneous of other electronics materials for various applications, including two-dimensional materials for optoelectronic and high-frequency devices. Finally, some recent advances in materials and flexible sensors for bioelectronics and medical applications are presented at the end of the book

Research and Technology, 1994
This report selectively summarizes the NASA Lewis Research Center's research and technology accomplishments for the fiscal year 1994. It comprises approximately 200 short articles submitted by the staff members of the technical directorates. The report is organized into six major sections: Aeronautics, Aerospace Technology, Space Flight Systems, Engineering and Computational Support, Lewis Research Academy, and Technology Transfer. A table of contents and author index have been developed to assist the reader in finding articles of special interest. This report is not intended to be a comprehensive summary of all research and technology work done over the past fiscal year. Most of the work is reported in Lewis-published technical reports, journal articles, and presentations prepared by Lewis staff members and contractors. In addition, university grants have enabled faculty members and graduate students to engage in sponsored research that is reported at technical meetings or in journal articles. For each article in this report a Lewis contact person has been identified, and where possible, reference documents are listed so that additional information can be easily obtained. The diversity of topics attests to the breadth of research and technology being pursued and to the skill mix of the staff that makes it possible
Semi-automatic liquid filling system using NodeMCU as an integrated Iot Learning tool
Computer programming and IoT are the key skills required in Industrial
Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). The industry demand is very high and therefore related
students in this field should grasp adequate knowledge and skill in college or university
prior to employment. However, learning technology related subject without
applying it to an actual hardware can pose difficulty to relate the theoretical knowledge
to problems in real application. It is proven that learning through hands-on
activities is more effective and promotes deeper understanding of the subject matter
(He et al. in Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) into STEM undergraduate education:
Case study of a modern technology infused courseware for embedded system
course. Erie, PA, USA, pp 1–9 (2016)). Thus, to fulfill the learning requirement, an
integrated learning tool that combines learning of computer programming and IoT
control for an industrial liquid filling system model is developed and tested. The
integrated learning tool uses NodeMCU, Blynk app and smartphone to enable the
IoT application. The system set-up is pre-designed for semi-automation liquid filling
process to enhance hands-on learning experience but can be easily programmed for
full automation. Overall, it is a user and cost friendly learning tool that can be developed
by academic staff to aid learning of IoT and computer programming in related
education levels and field

New Trends in Lithium Niobate
The present volume “New Trends in Lithium Niobate: From Bulk to Nanocrystals” contains the materials of a Special Issue of the MDPI journal Crystals dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Ortwin F. Schirmer and provides a new synopsis of his research focusing on LiNbO3. It also includes recent developments, exemplifying the continued interest in this outstanding ferroelectric, non-linear optical and holographic crystal as a workhorse for testing and realizing new ideas and applications. This book starts with reviews on intrinsic and extrinsic crystal defects in LiNbO3 of single-crystal, thin-film or nano-powder forms, studied by various optical, magnetic resonance and nuclear methods, clarifying in particular the reasons for the suppression of anion vacancy formation upon thermal reduction, mechano-chemical processing or irradiations of various types. The reviews are followed by research papers on the experimental and theoretical investigation of small polarons, together with recent results on the properties of Li(Nb,Ta)O3 mixed crystals. Among the various contributions dealing with nonlinear optical applications, papers on device development, entangled photon pair generation and thin films on the Lithium Niobate On Insulator (LNOI) platform can also be found
Biosensors
A biosensor is defined as a detecting device that combines a transducer with a
biologically sensitive and selective component. When a specific target molecule interacts
with the biological component, a signal is produced, at transducer level, proportional to the
concentration of the substance. Therefore biosensors can measure compounds present in the
environment, chemical processes, food and human body at low cost if compared with
traditional analytical techniques.
This book covers a wide range of aspects and issues related to biosensor technology,
bringing together researchers from 11 different countries. The book consists of 16 chapters
written by 53 authors. The first four chapters describe several aspects of nanotechnology
applied to biosensors. The subsequent section, including three chapters, is devoted to
biosensor applications in the fields of drug discovery, diagnostics and bacteria detection.
The principles behind optical biosensors and some of their application are discussed in
chapters from 8 to 11. The last five chapters treat of microelectronics, interfacing circuits,
signal transmission, biotelemetry and algorithms applied to biosensing

Thermal protection properties of aerogel-coated Kevlar woven fabrics
This paper investigated the thermal properties of aerogel-coated Kevlar fabrics under both the ambient
temperature and high temperature with laser radiation. It is found that the aerogels combined with a Kevlar fabric contribute
to a higher thermal insulation value. Under laser radiation with high temperature, the aerogel content plays a vital role on
the surface temperature of the fabrics. At laser radiations with pixel time 330 μs, the surface temperatures of the aerogel
coated Kevlar fabrics are 400-440°C lower than that of the uncoated fabric. Results also show that the fabric temperature
is directly proportional to pixel time. It can be concluded that the Kevlar fabrics coated with silica aerogel provides better
thermal protection under high temperature
