Impacts of domestic load and electric vehicles on domestic consumption in UK
This paper highlights domestic consumption of electricity in UK and effect of electric vehicles on the domestic demands. Also, consider the trends and growth of domestic electricity demand and the implication of using the electric vehicles. One challenging factor is the management of the domestic load electricity demand on the electric vehicles. To this end, this paper investigates new management technology technique that can be used in domestic sector. The key point to tackle this problem is to outline pattern shape of the electricity usage per individual household. However, lack of information on individual usage per consumer is complicating the path to the new solutions. Data were collected from daily energy consumption and energy peak demands from UK electricity industries. In additional the research explores the effect of recently introduced UK energy plan to reduce the CO2 emission and how this affects usage of the electric vehicle. The proposal in the new solutions includes the use of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and batteries banks for domestic supply. This would go a long way to reducing electricity demand as well as reduce CO2 emission from domestic sector

Residential Demand Response using Electricity Smart Meter Data
The electricity industry is currently undergoing changes in a transitioning period characterised by Energy 3D: Digitalisation, Decentralisation, and Decarbonisation. Smart meters are the vital infrastructure necessary to digitalise the energy system as well as enable advancements in decentralisation and decarbonisation. As of today, more than 500 million smart meters have been installed worldwide, with that number expected to rise to several billion installations over the decade. Smart meters enable electricity load to be measured with half-hourly granularity, providing an opportunity for demand-side management innovations that are likely to be advantageous for both utility companies and customers. Among these innovations, time-of- use (TOU) tariffs are widely considered to be the most promising solution for optimising energy consumption in the residential sector, however actual use is still limited.
The objective of this thesis is to investigate opportunities and problems related to TOU tariffs utilising smart meter data at the national level. The authors have identified four major research gaps which need to be filled in order to expand commercial applications of TOU tariffs. These gaps are the described and addressed in the following chapters: the "TOU load adaptation forecasting problem", the "TOU winner detection problem", the "TOU public dataset problem", and the "excess generation forecasting problem".
This thesis demonstrates three modelling approaches and one new TOU dataset (CAMSL). A significant contribution to the field is through the discover of new summary statistical features (statistical moments) and assesses the capacity of these to encapsulate other more widely used explanatory variables of demand response. The thesis is concluded by discussing future works and policy implications, such as the necessity of the more tailored modelling works and public live-stream of smart meter data, which could accelerate the roll-out of the demand side management at the residential sector.EPC
Shift, not drift : towards active demand response and beyond
Each semester the THINK project publishes two research reports based on topics proposed by the European Commission.Topic 11QM-01-13-151-EN-CQM-01-13-151-EN-NNowadays, the European electricity systems are evolving towards a generation mix that is more decentralised, less predictable and less dispatchable to operate. In this context, additional flexibility is expected to be provided by the demand side. Thus, how to engage consumers to participate in active demand response is becoming a pressing issue. This THINK report assesses how to realise this shift towards active consumers using a consumer-centred approach and does so from the perspective of contracts. On this basis, we recommend measures to be undertaken in the short-term, during the transition and in the long term, respectively, to achieve a full take-off of active demand response. The THINK project (2010-2013) is funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, Strategic Energy Technology Plan. Visions, Values, and Videos: Revisiting Envisionings in Service of UbiComp Design for the Home
UbiComp has been envisioned to bring about a future dominated by calm
computing technologies making our everyday lives ever more convenient. Yet the
same vision has also attracted criticism for encouraging a solitary and passive
lifestyle. The aim of this paper is to explore and elaborate these tensions
further by examining the human values surrounding future domestic UbiComp
solutions. Drawing on envisioning and contravisioning, we probe members of the
public (N=28) through the presentation and focus group discussion of two
contrasting animated video scenarios, where one is inspired by "calm" and the
other by "engaging" visions of future UbiComp technology. By analysing the
reasoning of our participants, we identify and elaborate a number of relevant
values involved in balancing the two perspectives. In conclusion, we articulate
practically applicable takeaways in the form of a set of key design questions

Energy advisors at work: charity work practices to support people in fuel poverty
We present an ethnographic study of energy advisors working for a charity that provides support, particularly to people in fuel poverty. Our fieldwork comprises detailed observations that reveal the collaborative, interactional work of energy advisors and clients during home visits, supplemented with interviews and a participatory design workshop with advisors. We identify opportunities for Ubicomp technologies that focus on supporting the work of the advisor, including complementing the collaborative advice giving in home visits, providing help remotely, and producing evidence in support of accounts of practices and building conditions useful for interactions with landlords, authorities and other third parties. We highlight six specific design challenges that relate the domestic fuel poverty setting to the wider Ubicomp literature. Our work echoes a shift in attention from energy use and the individual consumer, specifically to matters of advice work practices and the domestic fuel poverty setting, and to the discourse around inclusive Ubicomp technologies
