    Twenty years of rewriting logic

    AbstractRewriting logic is a simple computational logic that can naturally express both concurrent computation and logical deduction with great generality. This paper provides a gentle, intuitive introduction to its main ideas, as well as a survey of the work that many researchers have carried out over the last twenty years in advancing: (i) its foundations; (ii) its semantic framework and logical framework uses; (iii) its language implementations and its formal tools; and (iv) its many applications to automated deduction, software and hardware specification and verification, security, real-time and cyber-physical systems, probabilistic systems, bioinformatics and chemical systems

    Comprobación de modelos en sistemas concurrentes a partir de su semántica en Maude

    La comprobación de modelos (model checking) es una técnica automática para verificar si una propiedad se cumple en un sistema concurrente. Maude es un marco lógico de alto rendimiento donde se puede especificar, modelar, ejecutar y analizar —de forma sencilla— otros sistemas. Además, este entorno incluye un comprobador de modelos para verificar propiedades expresadas en lógica temporal lineal. Sin embargo, cuando una propiedad aplicada a un programa —escrito en un lenguaje de programación modelado para Maude— no se cumple, el contraejemplo —generado por el propio sistema— está basado en la semántica del propio Maude, dificultando la tarea de poder seguirlo a la hora de entender el resultado. En esta memoria presentamos la herramienta Selene, un marco genérico que maneja sistemas concurrentes asíncronos de modo que el usuario pueda obtener una versión simplificada de los contraejemplos generados por el comprobador de modelos en Maude tras la realización del análisis sobre programas escritos en otros lenguajes. Para lograrlo se ofrece un kernel para manejar la memoria y los mensajes, elementos que se emplearán en el “informe” final obtenido del contraejemplo. Sobre dicha arquitectura el usuario podrá especificar los detalles de la semántica del lenguaje a manejar. Por último, se analizará cuáles fueron los objetivos iniciales, los resultados obtenidos, los problemas encontrados durante el desarrollo, así como las propuestas y líneas futuras de trabajo que serían deseables para la mejora del proyecto

    Strategic Port Graph Rewriting: an Interactive Modelling Framework

    International audienceWe present strategic port graph rewriting as a basis for the implementation of visual modelling tools. The goal is to facilitate the specification and programming tasks associated with the modelling of complex systems. A system is represented by an initial graph and a collection of graph rewrite rules, together with a user-defined strategy to control the application of rules. The traditional operators found in strategy languages for term rewriting have been adapted to deal with the more general setting of graph rewriting, and some new constructs have been included in the strategy language to deal with graph traversal and management of rewriting positions in the graph.     Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC

    Revisiting logical semantics for processes and their distances

Más específicamente, nos centramos en el estudio de las relaciones de similitud entre procesos concurrentes. Comenzamos estudiando la bisimulación, considerada la más importante de estas relaciones, y vemos después cómo podemos extender nuestros resultados al resto de las semánticas de procesos estudiadas durante las últimas décadas. En particular, nuestra contribución a la comunidad científica, se centra en dos puntos principales: – El desarrollo de una caracterización lógica uniforme de las semánticas de procesos: proponemos un esquema lógico común (enmarcado en la conocida lógica modal de Hennessy-Milner) e incluimos las diferentes semánticas en este esquema, enfatizando las diferencias y similitudes entre ellas, que se presentan del modo más claro posible. – La presentación de una nueva noción de distancia, tanto entre procesos finitos como infinitos: la misma se diferencia de las anteriormente propuestas en su carácter global, que acumula las diferencias que aportan los distintos cómputos, en lugar de quedarnos con la máxima de ellas...This thesis can be included in the broad field of concurrency theory. More specifically, we focus on the study of the similarities between concurrent processes. We start from bisimulation, the main of these relations, and then we see how we can extend the obtained results to the rest of the semantics developed along the last years. In particular, our main contributions can be roughly described by the following two items: – The development of a unified logical characterization of process semantics: we propose a common logical scheme (within the framework of the well known Hennessy-Milner Logic) and we set the different semantics in this scheme by emphasizing, in the clearest possible way, the (dis)similarities between them. – We present a new notion of distance for both finite and infinite processes.     Continuous-time temporal logic specification and verification for nonlinear biological systems in uncertain contexts

    In this thesis we introduce a complete framework for modelling and verification of biological systems in uncertain contexts based on the bond-calculus process algebra and the LBUC spatio-temporal logic. The bond-calculus is a biological process algebra which captures complex patterns of interaction based on affinity patterns, a novel communication mechanism using pattern matching to express multiway interaction affinities and general kinetic laws, whilst retaining an agent-centric modelling style for biomolecular species. The bond-calculus is equipped with a novel continuous semantics which maps models to systems of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) in a compositional way. We then extend the bond-calculus to handle uncertain models, featuring interval uncertainties in their species concentrations and reaction rate parameters. Our semantics is also extended to handle uncertainty in every aspect of a model, producing non-deterministic continuous systems whose behaviour depends either on time-independent uncertain parameters and initial conditions, corresponding to our partial knowledge of the system at hand, or time-varying uncertain inputs, corresponding to genuine variability in a system’s behaviour based on environmental factors. This language is then coupled with the LBUC spatio-temporal logic which combines Signal Temporal Logic (STL) temporal operators with an uncertain context operator which quantifies over an uncertain context model describing the range of environments over which a property must hold. We develop model-checking procedures for STL and LBUC properties based on verified signal monitoring over flowpipes produced by the Flow* verified integrator, including the technique of masking which directs monitoring for atomic propositions to time regions relevant to the overall verification problem at hand. This allows us to monitor many interesting nested contextual properties and frequently reduces monitoring costs by an order of magnitude. Finally, we explore the technique of contextual signal monitoring which can use a single Flow* flowpipe representing a functional dependency to complete a whole tree of signals corresponding to different uncertain contexts. This allows us to produce refined monitoring results over the whole space and to explore the variation in system behaviour in different contexts

    Domain Completeness of Model Transformations and Synchronisations

    The intrinsic question of most activities in information science, in practice or science, is “Does a given system satisfy the requirements regarding its application?” Commonly, requirements are expressed and accessible by means of models, mostly in a diagrammatic representation by visual models. The requirements may change over time and are often defined from different perspectives and within different domains. This implies that models may be transformed either within the same domain-specific visual modelling language or into models in another language. Furthermore, model updates may be synchronised between different models. Most types of visual models can be represented by graphs where model transformations and synchronisations are performed by graph transformations. The theory of graph transformations emerged from its origins in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a generalisation of term and tree rewriting systems to an important field in (theoretical) computer science with applications particularly in visual modelling techniques, model transformations, synchronisations and behavioural specifications of models. Its formal foundations but likewise visual notation enable both precise definitions and proofs of important properties of model transformations and synchronisations from a theoretical point of view and an intuitive approach for specifying transformations and model updates from an engineer’s point of view. The recent results were presented in the EATCS monographs “Fundamentals of Algebraic Graph Transformation” (FAGT) in 2006 and its sequel “Graph and Model Transformation: General Framework and Applications” (GraMoT) in 2015. This thesis concentrates on one important property of model transformations and synchronisations, i.e., syntactical completeness. Syntactical completeness of model transformations means that given a specification for transforming models from a source modelling language into models in a target language, then all source models can be completely transformed into corresponding target models. In the same given context, syntactical completeness of model synchronisations means that all source model updates can be completely synchronised, resulting in corresponding target model updates. This work is essentially based on the GraMoT book and mainly extends its results for model transformations and synchronisations based on triple graph grammars by a new more general notion of syntactical completeness, namely domain completeness, together with corresponding verification techniques. Furthermore, the results are instantiated to the verification of the syntactical completeness of software transformations and synchronisations. The well-known transformation of UML class diagrams into relational database models and the transformation of programs of a small object-oriented programming language into class diagrams serve as running examples. The existing AGG tool is used to support the verification of the given examples in practice
