Images of Technology in Sociology: Computer as Butterfly and Bat

    Get PDF
Computers begin, without being aware of it, to effect a major turn in social science technology research: machine technology, having been left for a long time to engineers and environmentalists, arouses the interest of sociologists, too. The paper highlights the conceptual advances of a new sociology of technology, which takes seriously the social constructions of technology of computer scientists and computer users. In the context of an emerging "media ecology", the main argument is about a social scientific mystification of Artificial Intelligence technologies

1994 OURE report, including the 4th Annual UMR Undergraduate Research Symposium -- Entire Proceedings

    Get PDF
The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience program began in 1990. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the fourth annual OURE program. The goals of the program are: (1) to expand opportunities for a more active form of learning by students; (2) to encourage the direct interaction of undergraduate students with faculty through research; (3) to expand the level of research activity on the campus; (4) to help encourage superior students to pursue graduate study; and (5) to reinforce the idea that teaching and research are compatible and mutually reinforcing at a research university. The OURE program continues to achieve its goals -- UMR students have performed research on a wide variety of topics, have worked closely with faculty and have experienced first-hand both the excitement and the frustration of performing research. This volume contains papers presented at the fourth annual UMR Undergraduate Research Symposium held on March 23, 1994, and final reports of students participating in the 1993-94 OURE program. Students in the OURE program are encouraged to participate in the Symposium and participation increased substantially this year. Through programs such as this, the University of Missouri--Rolla, Missouri’s Technological University, continues to provide opportunities for its undergraduate students to further their research experiences in preparation for their future endeavors

A unified programming system for a multi-paradigm parallel architecture

    Get PDF
Real time image understanding and image generation require very large amounts of computing power. A possible way to meet these requirements is to make use of the power available from parallel computing systems. However parallel machines exhibit performance which is highly dependent on the algorithms being executed. Both image understanding and image generation involve the use of a wide variety of algorithms. A parallel machine suited to some of these algorithms may be unsuited to others. This thesis describes a novel heterogeneous parallel architecture optimised for image based applications. It achieves its performance by combining two different forms of parallel architecture, namely fine grain SIMD and course grain MIMD, into a single architecture. In this way it is possible to match the most appropriate computing resource to each algorithm in a given application. As important as the architecture itself is a method for programming it. This thesis describes a novel multi-paradigm programming language based on C++, which allows programs which make use of both control and data parallelism to be expressed in a single coherent framework, based on object oriented programming. To demonstrate the utility of both the architecture and the programming system, two applications, one from the field of image understanding the other image generation are examined. These applications combine some novel algorithms with other novel implementation approaches to provide the most effective mapping onto this architecture
