Remote healthcare has made a revolution in the healthcare domain. However, an important problem this field is facing is supporting patients who are subjected to severe emergencies (as heart attacks) to be both monitored and protected while being at home. In this paper, we present a conceptual framework with the main objectives of: 1) emergency handling through monitoring patients, detecting emergencies and insuring fast emergency responses; 2) preventing an emergency from happening in the first place through protecting patients by organising their lifestyles and habits. To achieve these objectives, we propose a layered middleware. Our context model combines two modelling methods: probabilistic modelling to capture uncertain information and ontology to ease knowledge sharing and reuse. In addition, our system uses a two-level reasoning approach (ontology-based reasoning and Bayesian-based reasoning) to manage both certain and uncertain contextual parameters in an adaptive manner. Bayesian network is learned from ontology. Moreover, to ensure a more sophisticated decision-making for service presentation, influence diagram and analytic hierarchy process are used along with regular probabilistic rules (confidence level) and basic semantic logic rules

Fuzzy logic is a method in soft computing category, a method that could process uncertain, inaccurate, and less cost implemented data. Some methods in soft computing category besides fuzzy logic are artificial network nerve, probabilistic reasoning, and evolutionary computing. Fuzzy logic has the ability to develop fuzzy system that is intelligent system in uncertain environment. Some stages in fuzzy system formation process is input and output analysis, determining input and output variable, defining each fuzzy set member function, determining rules based on experience or knowledge of an expert in his field, and implementing fuzzy system. Overall, fuzzy logic uses simple mathematical concept, understandable, detectable uncertain and accurate data. Fuzzy system could create and apply expert experiences directly without exercise process and effort to decode the knowledge into a computer until becoming a modeling system that could be relied on decision making

Towards the implementation of a preference-and uncertain-aware solver using answer set programming

Logic programs with possibilistic ordered disjunction (or LPPODs) are a recently defined logic-programming framework based on logic programs with ordered disjunction and possibilistic logic. The framework inherits the properties of such formalisms and merging them, it supports a reasoning which is nonmonotonic, preference-and uncertain-aware. The LPPODs syntax allows to specify 1) preferences in a qualitative way, and 2) necessity values about the certainty of program clauses. As a result at semantic level, preferences and necessity values can be used to specify an order among program solutions. This class of program therefore fits well in the representation of decision problems where a best option has to be chosen taking into account both preferences and necessity measures about information. In this paper we study the computation and the complexity of the LPPODs semantics and we describe the algorithm for its implementation following on Answer Set Programming approach. We describe some decision scenarios where the solver can be used to choose the best solutions by checking whether an outcome is possibilistically preferred over another considering preferences and uncertainty at the same time.Postprint (published version

Progress on Intelligent Guidance and Control for Wind Shear Encounter

Low altitude wind shear poses a serious threat to air safety. Avoiding severe wind shear challenges the ability of flight crews, as it involves assessing risk from uncertain evidence. A computerized intelligent cockpit aid can increase flight crew awareness of wind shear, improving avoidance decisions. The primary functions of a cockpit advisory expert system for wind shear avoidance are discussed. Also introduced are computational techniques being implemented to enable these primary functions

Analysis of human activities and identification of uncertain situations in context-aware systems

One of the main obstacles faced by context-aware systems developed for human activities recognition is related to dealing with incomplete data for decision making. Problems from several sources contribute to this phenomenon. Imprecise acquisition of data from sensors and the system’s design issues are among them. This paper presents an approach to tackle this trouble by dividing it into three parts. The first one refers to the validation of context data through an Attribute Grammar. The formalism and expressiveness provided a grammar, enriched with attribute evaluation rules and contextual constraints, ensures that the system will use only valid data for reasoning. Anomalous data will be detected, and the situation will be signalized. Also, the analysis of Quality of Context is provided, considering a set of characteristics, vouching that only useful information will be considered. At last, the identification of the sources of uncertain situations followed by a sequence of actions aiming to minimize the negative impacts of it helps the system to work with more complete sets of data. The formalization of the approach is provided together with an algorithm to validate it.FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/202
