    GPGPU Implementation of a Genetic Algorithm for Stereo Refinement

    During the last decade, the general-purpose computing on graphics processing units Graphics (GPGPU) has turned out to be a useful tool for speeding up many scientific calculations. Computer vision is known to be one of the fields with more penetration of these new techniques. This paper explores the advantages of using GPGPU implementation to speedup a genetic algorithm used for stereo refinement. The main contribution of this paper is analyzing which genetic operators take advantage of a parallel approach and the description of an efficient state- of-the-art implementation for each one. As a result, speed-ups close to x80 can be achieved, demonstrating to be the only way of achieving close to real-time performance

    Accelerated volumetric reconstruction from uncalibrated camera views

    While both work with images, computer graphics and computer vision are inverse problems. Computer graphics starts traditionally with input geometric models and produces image sequences. Computer vision starts with input image sequences and produces geometric models. In the last few years, there has been a convergence of research to bridge the gap between the two fields. This convergence has produced a new field called Image-based Rendering and Modeling (IBMR). IBMR represents the effort of using the geometric information recovered from real images to generate new images with the hope that the synthesized ones appear photorealistic, as well as reducing the time spent on model creation. In this dissertation, the capturing, geometric and photometric aspects of an IBMR system are studied. A versatile framework was developed that enables the reconstruction of scenes from images acquired with a handheld digital camera. The proposed system targets applications in areas such as Computer Gaming and Virtual Reality, from a lowcost perspective. In the spirit of IBMR, the human operator is allowed to provide the high-level information, while underlying algorithms are used to perform low-level computational work.     GPU data structures for graphics and vision

    Graphics hardware has in recent years become increasingly programmable, and its programming APIs use the stream processor model to expose massive parallelization to the programmer. Unfortunately, the inherent restrictions of the stream processor model, used by the GPU in order to maintain high performance, often pose a problem in porting CPU algorithms for both video and volume processing to graphics hardware. Serial data dependencies which accelerate CPU processing are counterproductive for the data-parallel GPU. This thesis demonstrates new ways for tackling well-known problems of large scale video/volume analysis. In some instances, we enable processing on the restricted hardware model by re-introducing algorithms from early computer graphics research. On other occasions, we use newly discovered, hierarchical data structures to circumvent the random-access read/fixed write restriction that had previously kept sophisticated analysis algorithms from running solely on graphics hardware. For 3D processing, we apply known game graphics concepts such as mip-maps, projective texturing, and dependent texture lookups to show how video/volume processing can benefit algorithmically from being implemented in a graphics API. The novel GPU data structures provide drastically increased processing speed, and lift processing heavy operations to real-time performance levels, paving the way for new and interactive vision/graphics applications.Graphikhardware wurde in den letzen Jahren immer weiter programmierbar. Ihre APIs verwenden das Streamprozessor-Modell, um die massive Parallelisierung auch fĂŒr den Programmierer verfĂŒgbar zu machen. Leider folgen aus dem strikten Streamprozessor-Modell, welches die GPU fĂŒr ihre hohe Rechenleistung benötigt, auch Hindernisse in der Portierung von CPU-Algorithmen zur Video- und Volumenverarbeitung auf die GPU. Serielle DatenabhĂ€ngigkeiten beschleunigen zwar CPU-Verarbeitung, sind aber fĂŒr die daten-parallele GPU kontraproduktiv . Diese Arbeit prĂ€sentiert neue Herangehensweisen fĂŒr bekannte Probleme der Video- und Volumensverarbeitung. Teilweise wird die Verarbeitung mit Hilfe von modifizierten Algorithmen aus der frĂŒhen Computergraphik-Forschung an das beschrĂ€nkte Hardwaremodell angepasst. Anderswo helfen neu entdeckte, hierarchische Datenstrukturen beim Umgang mit den Schreibzugriff-Restriktionen die lange die Portierung von komplexeren Bildanalyseverfahren verhindert hatten. In der 3D-Verarbeitung nutzen wir bekannte Konzepte aus der Computerspielegraphik wie Mipmaps, projektive Texturierung, oder verkettete Texturzugriffe, und zeigen auf welche Vorteile die Video- und Volumenverarbeitung aus hardwarebeschleunigter Graphik-API-Implementation ziehen kann. Die prĂ€sentierten GPU-Datenstrukturen bieten drastisch schnellere Verarbeitung und heben rechenintensive Operationen auf Echtzeit-Niveau.     Adaptive Methods for Point Cloud and Mesh Processing

    Point clouds and 3D meshes are widely used in numerous applications ranging from games to virtual reality to autonomous vehicles. This dissertation proposes several approaches for noise removal and calibration of noisy point cloud data and 3D mesh sharpening methods. Order statistic filters have been proven to be very successful in image processing and other domains as well. Different variations of order statistics filters originally proposed for image processing are extended to point cloud filtering in this dissertation. A brand-new adaptive vector median is proposed in this dissertation for removing noise and outliers from noisy point cloud data. The major contributions of this research lie in four aspects: 1) Four order statistic algorithms are extended, and one adaptive filtering method is proposed for the noisy point cloud with improved results such as preserving significant features. These methods are applied to standard models as well as synthetic models, and real scenes, 2) A hardware acceleration of the proposed method using Microsoft parallel pattern library for filtering point clouds is implemented using multicore processors, 3) A new method for aerial LIDAR data filtering is proposed. The objective is to develop a method to enable automatic extraction of ground points from aerial LIDAR data with minimal human intervention, and 4) A novel method for mesh color sharpening using the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator is proposed. Median and order statistics-based filters are widely used in signal processing and image processing because they can easily remove outlier noise and preserve important features. This dissertation demonstrates a wide range of results with median filter, vector median filter, fuzzy vector median filter, adaptive mean, adaptive median, and adaptive vector median filter on point cloud data. The experiments show that large-scale noise is removed while preserving important features of the point cloud with reasonable computation time. Quantitative criteria (e.g., complexity, Hausdorff distance, and the root mean squared error (RMSE)), as well as qualitative criteria (e.g., the perceived visual quality of the processed point cloud), are employed to assess the performance of the filters in various cases corrupted by different noisy models. The adaptive vector median is further optimized for denoising or ground filtering aerial LIDAR data point cloud. The adaptive vector median is also accelerated on multi-core CPUs using Microsoft Parallel Patterns Library. In addition, this dissertation presents a new method for mesh color sharpening using the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator, which is an approximation of second order derivatives on irregular 3D meshes. The one-ring neighborhood is utilized to compute the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The color for each vertex is updated by adding the Laplace-Beltrami operator of the vertex color weighted by a factor to its original value. Different discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator have been proposed for geometrical processing of 3D meshes. This work utilizes several discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for sharpening 3D mesh colors and compares their performance.     Literature Survey On Stereo Vision Disparity Map Algorithms

    This paper presents a literature survey on existing disparity map algorithms. It focuses on four main stages of processing as proposed by Scharstein and Szeliski in a taxonomy and evaluation of dense two-frame stereo correspondence algorithms performed in 2002. To assist future researchers in developing their own stereo matching algorithms, a summary of the existing algorithms developed for every stage of processing is also provided. The survey also notes the implementation of previous software-based and hardware-based algorithms. Generally, the main processing module for a software-based implementation uses only a central processing unit. By contrast, a hardware-based implementation requires one or more additional processors for its processing module, such as graphical processing unit or a field programmable gate array. This literature survey also presents a method of qualitative measurement that is widely used by researchers in the area of stereo vision disparity mappings

    Robotic 3D Reconstruction Utilising Structure from Motion

    Sensing the real-world is a well-established and continual problem in the field of robotics. Investigations into autonomous aerial and underwater vehicles have extended this challenge into sensing, mapping and localising in three dimensions. This thesis seeks to understand and tackle the challenges of recovering 3D information from an environment using vision alone. There is a well-established literature on the principles of doing this, and some impressive demonstrations; but this thesis explores the practicality of doing vision-based 3D reconstruction using multiple, mobile robotic platforms, the emphasis being on producing accurate 3D models. Typically, robotic platforms such as UAVs have a single on-board camera, restricting which method of visual 3D recovery can be employed. This thesis specifically explores Structure from Motion, a monocular 3D reconstruction technique which produces detailed and accurate, although slow to calculate, 3D reconstructions. It examines how well proof-of-concept demonstrations translate onto the kinds of robotic systems that are commonly deployed in the real world, where local processing is limited and network links have restricted capacity. In order to produce accurate 3D models, it is necessary to use high-resolution imagery, and the difficulties of working with this on remote robotic platforms is explored in some detail
