Meter data management for smart monitoring power networks

    Get PDF
The electrical power distribution and commercialization scenario is evolving worldwide, and electricity companies, faced with the challenge of new information requirements, are demanding IT solutions to deal with the smart monitoring of power networks. Two main challenges arise from data management and smart monitoring of power networks: real-time data acquisition and big data processing over short time periods. We present a solution in the form of a system architecture that conveys real time issues and has the capacity for big data management

Exposing city information to dynamic, distributed, powerful, scalable, and user-friendly big data systems is expected to enable the implementation of a wide range of new opportunities; however, the size, heterogeneity and geographical dispersion of data often makes it difficult to combine, analyze and consume them in a single system. In the context of the H2020 CLASS project, we describe an innovative framework aiming to facilitate the design of advanced big-data analytics workflows. The proposal covers the whole compute continuum, from edge to cloud, and relies on a well-organized distributed infrastructure exploiting: a) edge solutions with advanced computer vision technologies enabling the real-time generation of “rich” data from a vast array of sensor types; b) cloud data management techniques offering efficient storage, real-time querying and updating of the high-frequency incoming data at different granularity levels. We specifically focus on obstacle detection and tracking for edge processing, and consider a traffic density monitoring application, with hierarchical data aggregation features for cloud processing; the discussed techniques will constitute the groundwork enabling many further services. The tests are performed on the real use-case of the Modena Automotive Smart Area (MASA)

The management of big data is the most important issue for this decade since the real world applications are generating very large scale of data in petabytes and zetabytes scale. Most popular solution of big data management is a system based on Hadoop Distributed File System. However, implementing enterprise level solution is a challenge because of the production of such huge data. In this project, we employ Hadoop cluster to the telecommunication data since it produces a huge amount of log data regarding to customer calls as well as network equipment. To emphasize more realistic solution we ponder on call data details for our Big Data application. In this project, we have acquired real-time Call Data Record (CDR) data for our implementation from telco operator named Banglalink who is operating 30 million users in Bangladesh. To narrow down the scope, CDR data analytics using Hadoop cluster can result top callers to promote customer experience. This implement can also help Banglalink to implement similar application for backup data warehouse using Hadoop cluster for CDR analytics

Traffic management is being more important than ever, especially in overcrowded big cities with over-pollution problems and with new unprecedented mobility changes. In this scenario, road-traffic prediction plays a key role within Intelligent Transportation Systems, allowing traffic managers to be able to anticipate and take the proper decisions. This paper aims to analyse the situation in a commercial real-time prediction system with its current problems and limitations. The analysis unveils the trade-off between simple parsimonious models and more complex models. Finally, we propose an enriched machine learning framework, Adarules, for the traffic prediction in real-time facing the problem as continuously incoming data streams with all the commonly occurring problems in such volatile scenario, namely changes in the network infrastructure and demand, new detection stations or failure ones, among others. The framework is also able to infer automatically the most relevant features to our end-task, including the relationships within the road network. Although the intention with the proposed framework is to evolve and grow with new incoming big data, however there is no limitation in starting to use it without any prior knowledge as it can starts learning the structure and parameters automatically from data. We test this predictive system in different real-work scenarios, and evaluate its performance integrating a multi-task learning paradigm for the sake of the traffic prediction task.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

© 2019 Association for Computing Machinery. All rights reserved. Integration of embedded multimedia devices with powerful computing platforms, e.g., machine learning platforms, helps to build smart cities and transforms the concept of Internet of Things into Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT). To provide different services to the residents of smart cities, the IoMT technology generates big multimedia data. The management of big multimedia data is a challenging task for IoMT technology. Without proper management, it is hard to maintain consistency, reusability, and reconcilability of generated big multimedia data in smart cities. Various machine learning techniques can be used for automatic classification of raw multimedia data and to allow machines to learn features and perform specific tasks. In this survey, we focus on various machine learning platforms that can be used to process and manage big multimedia data generated by different applications in smart cities. We also highlight various limitations and research challenges that need to be considered when processing big multimedia data in real-time
