A Dense Reference Network for Mass-Market Centimeter-Accurate Positioning
The quality of atmospheric corrections provided
by a dense reference network for centimeter-accurate carrierphase
differential GNSS (CDGNSS) positioning is investigated.
A dense reference network (less than 20 km inter-station distance)
offers significant benefits for mass-market users, enabling lowcost
(including single-frequency) CDGNSS positioning with rapid
integer ambiguity resolution. Precise positioning on a massmarket
platform would significantly influence the world economy,
ushering in a host of consumer-focused applications such as
globally-registered augmented and virtual reality and improved
all-weather safety and efficiency for intelligent transportation
systems, applications which have so far been hampered by the
several-meter-level errors in standard GNSS positioning. This
contribution examines CDGNSS integer ambiguity resolution
performance in terms of network correction uncertainty, and
network correction uncertainty, in turn, in terms of network
density. It considers the total error in network corrections: a
sum of ionospheric, tropospheric, and reference station multipath
components. The paper’s primary goal is to identify the network
density beyond which mass-market users would see no further
significant improvement in ambiguity resolution performance. It
finishes by describing development and deployment of a low-cost
dense reference network in Austin, Texas.Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanic
Poisson multi-Bernoulli conjugate prior for multiple extended object filtering
This paper presents a Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) conjugate prior
for multiple extended object filtering. A Poisson point process is used to
describe the existence of yet undetected targets, while a multi-Bernoulli
mixture describes the distribution of the targets that have been detected. The
prediction and update equations are presented for the standard transition
density and measurement likelihood. Both the prediction and the update preserve
the PMBM form of the density, and in this sense the PMBM density is a conjugate
prior. However, the unknown data associations lead to an intractably large
number of terms in the PMBM density, and approximations are necessary for
tractability. A gamma Gaussian inverse Wishart implementation is presented,
along with methods to handle the data association problem. A simulation study
shows that the extended target PMBM filter performs well in comparison to the
extended target d-GLMB and LMB filters. An experiment with Lidar data
illustrates the benefit of tracking both detected and undetected targets
Study of aircraft in intraurban transportation systems, volume 1
An analysis of an effective short range, high density computer transportation system for intraurban systems is presented. The seven county Detroit, Michigan, metropolitan area, was chosen as the scenario for the analysis. The study consisted of an analysis and forecast of the Detroit market through 1985, a parametric analysis of appropriate short haul aircraft concepts and associated ground systems, and a preliminary overall economic analysis of a simplified total system designed to evaluate the candidate vehicles and select the most promising VTOL and STOL aircraft. Data are also included on the impact of advanced technology on the system, the sensitivity of mission performance to changes in aircraft characteristics and system operations, and identification of key problem areas that may be improved by additional research. The approach, logic, and computer models used are adaptable to other intraurban or interurban areas
Time Variability in the X-ray Nebula Powered by Pulsar B1509-58
We use new and archival Chandra and ROSAT data to study the time variability
of the X-ray emission from the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) powered by PSR B1509-58
on timescales of one week to twelve years. There is variability in the size,
number, and brightness of compact knots appearing within 20" of the pulsar,
with at least one knot showing a possible outflow velocity of ~0.6c (assuming a
distance to the source of 5.2 kpc). The transient nature of these knots may
indicate that they are produced by turbulence in the flows surrounding the
pulsar. A previously identified prominent jet extending 12 pc to the southeast
of the pulsar increased in brightness by 30% over 9 years; apparent outflow of
material along this jet is observed with a velocity of ~0.5c. However, outflow
alone cannot account for the changes in the jet on such short timescales.
Magnetohydrodynamic sausage or kink instabilities are feasible explanations for
the jet variability with timescale of ~1.3-2 years. An arc structure, located
30"-45" north of the pulsar, shows transverse structural variations and appears
to have moved inward with a velocity of ~0.03c over three years. The overall
structure and brightness of the diffuse PWN exterior to this arc and excluding
the jet has remained the same over the twelve year span. The photon indices of
the diffuse PWN and possibly the jet steepen with increasing radius, likely
indicating synchrotron cooling at X-ray energies.Comment: accepted to ApJ, 14 pages, 8 figure
