    Uber Effort: The Production of Worker Consent in Online Ride Sharing Platforms

    The rise of the online gig economy alters ways of working. Mediated by algorithmically programmed mobile apps, platforms such as Uber and Lyft allow workers to work by driving and completing rides at any time or in any place that the drivers choose. This hybrid form of labor in an online gig economy which combines independent contract work with computer-mediated work differs from traditional manufacturing jobs in both its production activity and production relations. Through nine interviews with Lyft/Uber drivers, I found that workers’ consent, which was first articulated by Michael Burawoy in the context of the manufacturing economy, is still present in the work of the online gig economy in post-industrial capitalism. Workers willingly engage in the on-demand work not only to earn money but also to play a learning game motivated by the ambiguity of the management system, in which process they earn a sense of self-satisfaction and an illusion of autonomous control. This research points to the important role of technology in shaping contemporary labor process and suggests the potential mechanism which produces workers’ consent in technology-driven workplaces

    Reputation Agent: Prompting Fair Reviews in Gig Markets

    Our study presents a new tool, Reputation Agent, to promote fairer reviews from requesters (employers or customers) on gig markets. Unfair reviews, created when requesters consider factors outside of a worker's control, are known to plague gig workers and can result in lost job opportunities and even termination from the marketplace. Our tool leverages machine learning to implement an intelligent interface that: (1) uses deep learning to automatically detect when an individual has included unfair factors into her review (factors outside the worker's control per the policies of the market); and (2) prompts the individual to reconsider her review if she has incorporated unfair factors. To study the effectiveness of Reputation Agent, we conducted a controlled experiment over different gig markets. Our experiment illustrates that across markets, Reputation Agent, in contrast with traditional approaches, motivates requesters to review gig workers' performance more fairly. We discuss how tools that bring more transparency to employers about the policies of a gig market can help build empathy thus resulting in reasoned discussions around potential injustices towards workers generated by these interfaces.     Employment and Working Conditions of Selected Types of Platform Work

    Platform work is a form of employment that uses an online platform to match the supply of and demand for paid labour. In Europe, platform work is still small in scale but is rapidly developing. The types of work offered through platforms are ever-increasing, as are the challenges for existing regulatory frameworks. This report explores the working and employment conditions of three of the most common types of platform work in Europe. For each of these types, Eurofound assesses the physical and social environment, autonomy, employment status and access to social protection, and earnings and taxation based on interviews with platform workers. A comparative analysis of the regulatory frameworks applying to platform work in 18 EU Member States accompanies this review. This looks into workers’ employment status, the formal relationships between clients, workers and platforms, and the organisation and representation of workers and platforms

    Understanding the Platform Economy: Signals, Trust, and Social Interaction

    Two-sided markets are gaining increasing importance. Examples include accommodation and car sharing, resale, shared mobility, crowd work, and many more. As these businesses rely on transactions among users, central aspects to virtually all platforms are the creation and maintenance of trust. While research has considered effects of trust-building on diverse platforms in isolation, the overall platform landscape has received much less attention. However, cross-platform comparison is important since platforms vary in their degree of social interaction, which, as we demonstrate in this paper, determines the adequacy and use of different trust mechanisms. Based on actual market data, we examine the mechanisms platforms employ and how frequent users rely on them. We contrast this view against survey data on users’ perceptions of the context-specific importance of these trust-building tools. Our findings provide robust evidence for our reasoning on the relation between platforms’ degree of social interaction and the associated expressive trust cues

    Platform work is a type of work using an online platform to intermediate between platform workers, who provide services, and paying clients. Platform work seems to be growing in size and importance. This study explores platform work in the EU28, Norway and Iceland, with a focus on the challenges it presents to working conditions and social protection, and how countries have responded through top-down (e.g. legislation and case law) and bottom-up actions (e.g. collective agreements, actions by platform workers or platforms). This national mapping is accompanied by a comparative assessment of selected EU legal instruments, mostly in the social area. Each instrument is assessed for personal and material scope to determine how it might impact such challenges. Four broad legal domains with relevance to platform work challenges are examined in stand-alone reflection papers. Together, the national mapping and legal analysis support a gap analysis, which aims to indicate where further action on platform work would be useful, and what form such action might take

    Reconsidering online reputation systems

    Social and socioeconomic interactions and transactions often require trust. In digital spaces, the main approach to facilitating trust has effectively been to try to reduce or even remove the need for it through the implementation of reputation systems. These generate metrics based on digital data such as ratings and reviews submitted by users, interaction histories, and so on, that are intended to label individuals as more or less reliable or trustworthy in a particular interaction context. We suggest that conventional approaches to the design of such systems are rooted in a capitalist, competitive paradigm, relying on methodological individualism, and that the reputation technologies themselves thus embody and enact this paradigm in whatever space they operate in. We question whether the politics, ethics and philosophy that contribute to this paradigm align with those of some of the contexts in which reputation systems are now being used, and suggest that alternative approaches to the establishment of trust and reputation in digital spaces need to be considered for alternative contexts

    Gender Equality in Virtual Work II.: Regulatory Suggestions

    This article focuses on gender equality in virtual work, taking special account of the regulatory challenges. It contributes to broader debates on the workers' situation in the sharing economy in two ways. Firstly, it makes an inaugural attempt to evaluate the implications of the new forms of work in the sharing economy for female virtual workers, looking at the issue of equal treatment. Secondly, it offers preliminary suggestions regarding a future regulation to improve equality between genders in virtual work. This is the second part of a paper on gender equality in virtual work. The first part (published in the 2018/1 issue of the Hungarian Labour Law E-Journal) defined "virtual work", classified its two basic forms and emphasised the specific traits of this form of work to demonstrate the need of special protection against discrimination. Subsequently, it identified the possible beneficial and adverse implications of virtual work for female workers and gender equality. This second part firstly provides a summary of the gender equality law of the European Union that serves as a point of reference when speaking about antidiscrimination law. Section 2 offers three normative perspectives and suggestions as to how to enhance gender equality in virtual work. Finally, the paper concludes

    The Sharing Economy Platforms: Managerial perspective for peer-to-peer services

    The increased usage of mobile devices and constant online presence as well as the changes in consumer values have helped the sharing economy platforms to grow significantly. The sharing economy platforms are not only competitors to one another but also to the incumbent companies. The sharing economy platforms benefit from the idle resources owned by the individuals willing to contribute to the platform, which means that value creation differs from traditional business models. This thesis presents the key differences between managing incumbent companies and managing the sharing economy platforms. This thesis provides a managerial perspective for peer-to-peer services by using two research methods: a literature review and an online study. The literature review focuses on academical studies and frameworks presented by researchers and the online study clarifies the current practices the sharing economy platforms are using to tackle some managerial issues relevant for sharing economy businesses. Moreover, some criticism the sharing economy has confronted is presented in the thesis. In addition to addressing the key differences and challenges in managing sharing economy platforms, this thesis provides suggestions on how to avoid common pitfalls and how to tackle common challenges

    Takeaway Trust: A market data perspective on reputation portability in electronic commerce

    Reputation has become a key factor within today’s online platform landscape. In particular for sellers in electronic commerce, the management of reputation as a signal of trustworthiness has become a relevant business activity. Prior studies have focused on either the role of reputation within given (but platform-bound) environments or general data portability between platforms. The question of cross-platform reputation portability, however, has thus far achieved much less attention. With this exploratory work, we present survey data on consumers’ perception of portable reputation in the platform economy and a case study based on actual (seller) market data from an e commerce marketplace. Our results show that consumers are generally receptive for imported seller reputation. However, for seller ratings to function as an effective signaling device across platform boundaries, adequate means of representation have yet to be found

    Emotional Labor in the Sharing Economy

    The peer-to-peer nature of the sharing economy encourages participants to alter their behavior in ways that resemble traditional notions of emotional labor. A key element in this shift lies in the coercive nature of feedback mechanisms which condition both providers and consumers to perform emotional labor during service encounters. Using survey data from 207 sharing economy consumers in the US, we show how different facets of the feedback mechanisms employed by sharing economy services influence consumers’ emotional labor. In addition, we show how platforms and their policies matter in encouraging emotional labor, indicating the need to analyze the topic on a fine-grained level. We conclude by deriving propositions for future research and practical recommendations
