    Source coding for transmission of reconstructed dynamic geometry: a rate-distortion-complexity analysis of different approaches

    Live 3D reconstruction of a human as a 3D mesh with commodity electronics is becoming a reality. Immersive applications (i.e. cloud gaming, tele-presence) benefit from effective transmission of such content over a bandwidth limited link. In this paper we outline different approaches for compressing live reconstructed mesh geometry based on distributing mesh reconstruction functions between sender and receiver. We evaluate rate-performance-complexity of different configurations. First, we investigate 3D mesh compression methods (i.e. dynamic/static) from MPEG-4.     Steered mixture-of-experts for light field images and video : representation and coding

    Research in light field (LF) processing has heavily increased over the last decade. This is largely driven by the desire to achieve the same level of immersion and navigational freedom for camera-captured scenes as it is currently available for CGI content. Standardization organizations such as MPEG and JPEG continue to follow conventional coding paradigms in which viewpoints are discretely represented on 2-D regular grids. These grids are then further decorrelated through hybrid DPCM/transform techniques. However, these 2-D regular grids are less suited for high-dimensional data, such as LFs. We propose a novel coding framework for higher-dimensional image modalities, called Steered Mixture-of-Experts (SMoE). Coherent areas in the higher-dimensional space are represented by single higher-dimensional entities, called kernels. These kernels hold spatially localized information about light rays at any angle arriving at a certain region. The global model consists thus of a set of kernels which define a continuous approximation of the underlying plenoptic function. We introduce the theory of SMoE and illustrate its application for 2-D images, 4-D LF images, and 5-D LF video. We also propose an efficient coding strategy to convert the model parameters into a bitstream. Even without provisions for high-frequency information, the proposed method performs comparable to the state of the art for low-to-mid range bitrates with respect to subjective visual quality of 4-D LF images. In case of 5-D LF video, we observe superior decorrelation and coding performance with coding gains of a factor of 4x in bitrate for the same quality. At least equally important is the fact that our method inherently has desired functionality for LF rendering which is lacking in other state-of-the-art techniques: (1) full zero-delay random access, (2) light-weight pixel-parallel view reconstruction, and (3) intrinsic view interpolation and super-resolution

    Neural Video Compression using GANs for Detail Synthesis and Propagation

    We present the first neural video compression method based on generative adversarial networks (GANs). Our approach significantly outperforms previous neural and non-neural video compression methods in a user study, setting a new state-of-the-art in visual quality for neural methods. We show that the GAN loss is crucial to obtain this high visual quality. Two components make the GAN loss effective: we i) synthesize detail by conditioning the generator on a latent extracted from the warped previous reconstruction to then ii) propagate this detail with high-quality flow. We find that user studies are required to compare methods, i.e., none of our quantitative metrics were able to predict all studies.     In this dissertation, three problems in image deblurring, inpainting and virtual content insertion are solved in a Bayesian framework.;Camera shake, motion or defocus during exposure leads to image blur. Single image deblurring has achieved remarkable results by solving a MAP problem, but there is no perfect solution due to inaccurate image prior and estimator. In the first part, a new non-blind deconvolution algorithm is proposed. The image prior is represented by a Gaussian Scale Mixture(GSM) model, which is estimated from non-blurry images as training data. Our experimental results on a total twelve natural images have shown that more details are restored than previous deblurring algorithms.;In augmented reality, it is a challenging problem to insert virtual content in video streams by blending it with spatial and temporal information. A generic virtual content insertion (VCI) system is introduced in the second part. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first successful system to insert content on the building facades from street view video streams. Without knowing camera positions, the geometry model of a building facade is established by using a detection and tracking combined strategy. Moreover, motion stabilization, dynamic registration and color harmonization contribute to the excellent augmented performance in this automatic VCI system.;Coding efficiency is an important objective in video coding. In recent years, video coding standards have been developing by adding new tools. However, it costs numerous modifications in the complex coding systems. Therefore, it is desirable to consider alternative standard-compliant approaches without modifying the codec structures. In the third part, an exemplar-based data pruning video compression scheme for intra frame is introduced. Data pruning is used as a pre-processing tool to remove part of video data before they are encoded. At the decoder, missing data is reconstructed by a sparse linear combination of similar patches. The novelty is to create a patch library to exploit similarity of patches. The scheme achieves an average 4% bit rate reduction on some high definition videos

    Visual Content Characterization Based on Encoding Rate-Distortion Analysis

    Visual content characterization is a fundamentally important but under exploited step in dataset construction, which is essential in solving many image processing and computer vision problems. In the era of machine learning, this has become ever more important, because with the explosion of image and video content nowadays, scrutinizing all potential content is impossible and source content selection has become increasingly difficult. In particular, in the area of image/video coding and quality assessment, it is highly desirable to characterize/select source content and subsequently construct image/video datasets that demonstrate strong representativeness and diversity of the visual world, such that the visual coding and quality assessment methods developed from and validated using such datasets exhibit strong generalizability. Encoding Rate-Distortion (RD) analysis is essential for many multimedia applications. Examples of applications that explicitly use RD analysis include image encoder RD optimization, video quality assessment (VQA), and Quality of Experience (QoE) optimization of streaming videos etc. However, encoding RD analysis has not been well investigated in the context of visual content characterization. This thesis focuses on applying encoding RD analysis as a visual source content characterization method with image/video coding and quality assessment applications in mind. We first conduct a video quality subjective evaluation experiment for state-of-the-art video encoder performance analysis and comparison, where our observations reveal severe problems that motivate the needs of better source content characterization and selection methods. Then the effectiveness of RD analysis in visual source content characterization is demonstrated through a proposed quality control mechanism for video coding by eigen analysis in the space of General Quality Parameter (GQP) functions. Finally, by combining encoding RD analysis with submodular set function optimization, we propose a novel method for automating the process of representative source content selection, which helps boost the RD performance of visual encoders trained with the selected visual contents
