Linear precoding for multicarrier and multicast PLC
International audienceOne of the first publications of its kind in the exciting field of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) power line communications (PLC), MIMO Power Line Communications: Narrow and Broadband Standards, EMC, and Advanced Processing contains contributions from experts in industry and academia, making it practical enough to provide a solid understanding of how PLC technologies work, yet scientific enough to form a base for ongoing R&D activities. This book is subdivided into five thematic parts. Part I looks at narrow- and broadband channel characterization based on measurements from around the globe. Taking into account current regulations and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), part II describes MIMO signal processing strategies and related capacity and throughput estimates. Current narrow- and broadband PLC standards and specifications are described in the various chapters of part III. Advanced PLC processing options are treated in part IV, drawing from a wide variety of research areas such as beamforming/precoding, time reversal, multi-user processing, and relaying. Lastly, part V contains case studies and field trials, where the advanced technologies of tomorrow are put into practice today. Suitable as a reference or a handbook, MIMO Power Line Communications: Narrow and Broadband Standards, EMC, and Advanced Processing features self-contained chapters with extensive cross-referencing to allow for a flexible reading path
Fairness-Adaptive Goodput-Based Resource Allocation in OFDMA Downlink with ARQ
We present a cross-layer resource-allocation (RA) scheme for the downlink in orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) systems with fairness control among the users, where the resources to be allocated are power, bits per symbol, and subchannels. The use of subchannels, which are defined as group of subcarriers, leads to reducing the complexity of the bandwidth allocation compared with the commonly adopted subcarrier allocation. A goodput-based optimization function, which is derived by combining automatic repeat request (ARQ) and physical (PHY)-layer parameters, is used to perform RA for applications that demand error-free transmissions. Two transmission strategies are considered, with and without concatenation of subchannels, for which two different RA methods are developed, respectively. We also propose an algorithm that improves the complexity associated to both concatenation and nonconcatenation schemes, without appreciable performance loss. The work was supported by the GRE3N Project under Grant TEC2011-29006-C03-03.Publicad

Cross-layer design for OFDMA wireless networks with finite queue length based on game theory
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London. In next generation wireless networks such as 4G- LTE and WiMax, the demand for high data rates, the scarcity of wireless resources and the time varying channel conditions has led to the adoption of more sophisticated and robust techniques in PHY such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and the corresponding access technique known as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA). Cross-layer schedulers have been developed in order to describe the procedure of resource allocation in OFDMA wireless networks. The resource allocation in OFDMA wireless networks has received great attention in research, by proposing many different ways for frequency diversity exploitation and system’s optimization. Many cross-layer proposals for dynamic resource allocation have been investigated in literature approaching the optimization problem from different viewpoints i.e. maximizing total data rate, minimizing total transmit power, satisfying minimum users’ requirements or providing fairness amongst users. The design of a cross-layer scheduler for OFDMA wireless networks is the topic of this research. The scheduler utilizes game theory in order to make decisions for subcarrier and power allocation to the users with the main concern being to maintain fairness as well as to maximize overall system’s performance. A very well known theorem in cooperative game theory, the Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS), is employed and solved in a close form way, resulting in a Pareto optimal solution. Two different cases are proposed. The first one is the symmetric NBS (S-NBS) where all users have the same weight and therefore all users have the same opportunity for resources and the second one, is the asymmetric NBS (A-NBS), where users have different weights, hence different priorities where the scheduler favours users with higher priorities at expense of lower priority users. As MAC layer is vital for cross-layer, the scheduler is combined with a queuing model based on Markov chain in order to describe more realistically the incoming procedure from the higher layers
Multi-user spatial diversity techniques for wireless communication systems
Multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver, formally known as multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) systems have the potential to either increase the data rates
through spatial multiplexing or enhance the quality of services through exploitation
of diversity. In this thesis, the problem of downlink spatial multiplexing, where a
base station (BS) serves multiple users simultaneously in the same frequency band is
addressed. Spatial multiplexing techniques have the potential to make huge saving
in the bandwidth utilization. We propose spatial diversity techniques with and without
the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter.
We start with proposing improvement to signal-to-leakage ratio (SLR) maximization
based spatial multiplexing techniques for both fiat fading and frequency selective
channels. [Continues.

Recent Advances in Acquiring Channel State Information in Cellular MIMO Systems
In cellular multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems the quality of the available channel state information (CSI) has a large impact on the system performance. Specifically, reliable CSI at the transmitter is required to determine the appropriate modulation and coding scheme, transmit power and the precoder vector, while CSI at the receiver is needed to decode the received data symbols. Therefore, cellular MUMIMO systems employ predefined pilot sequences and configure associated time, frequency, code and power resources to facilitate the acquisition of high quality CSI for data transmission and reception. Although the trade-off between the resources used user data transmission has been known for long, the near-optimal configuration of the vailable system resources for pilot and data transmission is a topic of current research efforts. Indeed, since the fifth generation of cellular systems utilizes heterogeneous networks in which base stations are equipped with a large number of transmit and receive antennas, the appropriate configuration of pilot-data resources becomes a critical design aspect. In this article, we review recent advances in system design approaches that are designed for the acquisition of CSI and discuss some of the recent results that help to dimension the pilot and data resources specifically in cellular MU-MIMO systems
