    Continuous feedback fluid queues

    We investigate a fluid buffer which is modulated by a stochastic background process, while the momentary behavior of the background process depends on the current buffer level in a continuous way. Loosely speaking the feedback is such that the background process behaves `as a Markov process' with generator Q(y)Q(y) at times when the buffer level is yy, where the entries of Q(y)Q(y) are continuous functions of yy. Moreover, the flow rates for the buffer may also depend continuously on the current buffer level. Such models are interesting in the context of closed-loop telecommunication networks, in which sources interact with network buffers, but may also be deployed in the study of certain production systems. \u

    Restless bandit marginal productivity indices I: singleproject case and optimal control of a make-to-stock M/G/1 queue

    This paper develops a framework based on convex optimization and economic ideas to formulate and solve by an index policy the problem of optimal dynamic effort allocation to a generic discrete-state restless bandit (i.e. binary-action: work/rest) project, elucidating a host of issues raised by Whittle (1988)Žs seminal work on the topic. Our contributions include: (i) a unifying definition of a projectŽs marginal productivity index (MPI), characterizing optimal policies; (ii) a complete characterization of indexability (existence of the MPI) as satisfaction by the project of the law of diminishing returns (to effort); (iii) sufficient indexability conditions based on partial conservation laws (PCLs), extending previous results of the author from the finite to the countable state case; (iv) application to a semi-Markov project, including a new MPI for a mixed longrun-average (LRA)/ bias criterion, which exists in relevant queueing control models where the index proposed by Whittle (1988) does not; and (v) optimal MPI policies for service-controlled make-to-order (MTO) and make-to-stock (MTS) M/G/1 queues with convex back order and stock holding cost rates, under discounted and LRA criteria

    A variational approach for continuous supply chain networks

    We consider a continuous supply chain network consisting of buffering queues and processors first proposed by [D. Armbruster, P. Degond, and C. Ringhofer, SIAM J. Appl. Math., 66 (2006), pp. 896–920] and subsequently analyzed by [D. Armbruster, P. Degond, and C. Ringhofer, Bull. Inst. Math. Acad. Sin. (N.S.), 2 (2007), pp. 433–460] and [D. Armbruster, C. De Beer, M. Fre- itag, T. Jagalski, and C. Ringhofer, Phys. A, 363 (2006), pp. 104–114]. A model was proposed for such a network by [S. G ̈ottlich, M. Herty, and A. Klar, Commun. Math. Sci., 3 (2005), pp. 545–559] using a system of coupling ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. In this article, we propose an alternative approach based on a variational method to formulate the network dynamics. We also derive, based on the variational method, a computational algorithm that guarantees numerical stability, allows for rigorous error estimates, and facilitates efficient computations. A class of network flow optimization problems are formulated as mixed integer programs (MIPs). The proposed numerical algorithm and the corresponding MIP are compared theoretically and numerically with existing ones [A. Fu ̈genschuh, S. Go ̈ttlich, M. Herty, A. Klar, and A. Martin, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 30 (2008), pp. 1490–1507; S. Go ̈ttlich, M. Herty, and A. Klar, Commun. Math.     Particle filter state estimator for large urban networks

    This paper applies a particle filter (PF) state estimator to urban traffic networks. The traffic network consists of signalized intersections, the roads that link these intersections, and sensors that detect the passage time of vehicles. The traffic state X(t) specifies at each time time t the state of the traffic lights, the queue sizes at the intersections, and the location and size of all the platoons of vehicles inside the system. The basic entity of our model is a platoon of vehicles that travel close together at approximately the same speed. This leads to a discrete event simulation model that is much faster than microscopic models representing individual vehicles. Hence it is possible to execute many random simulation runs in parallel. A particle filter (PF) assigns weights to each of these simulation runs, according to how well they explain the observed sensor signals. The PF thus generates estimates at each time t of the location of the platoons, and more importantly the queue size at each intersection. These estimates can be used for controlling the optimal switching times of the traffic light

    Interference Queueing Networks on Grids

    Consider a countably infinite collection of interacting queues, with a queue located at each point of the dd-dimensional integer grid, having independent Poisson arrivals, but dependent service rates. The service discipline is of the processor sharing type,with the service rate in each queue slowed down, when the neighboring queues have a larger workload. The interactions are translation invariant in space and is neither of the Jackson Networks type, nor of the mean-field type. Coupling and percolation techniques are first used to show that this dynamics has well defined trajectories. Coupling from the past techniques are then proposed to build its minimal stationary regime. The rate conservation principle of Palm calculus is then used to identify the stability condition of this system, where the notion of stability is appropriately defined for an infinite dimensional process. We show that the identified condition is also necessary in certain special cases and conjecture it to be true in all cases. Remarkably, the rate conservation principle also provides a closed form expression for the mean queue size. When the stability condition holds, this minimal solution is the unique translation invariant stationary regime. In addition, there exists a range of small initial conditions for which the dynamics is attracted to the minimal regime. Nevertheless, there exists another range of larger though finite initial conditions for which the dynamics diverges, even though stability criterion holds.Comment: Minor Spell Change

    An efficient hybrid model and dynamic performance analysis for multihop wireless networks

    Multihop wireless networks can be subjected to nonstationary phenomena due to a dynamic network topology and time varying traffic. However, the simulation techniques used to study multihop wireless networks focus on the steady-state performance even though transient or nonstationary periods will often occur. Moreover, the majority of the simulators suffer from poor scalability. In this paper, we develop an efficient performance modeling technique for analyzing the time varying queueing behavior of multihop wireless networks. The one-hop packet transmission (service) time is assumed to be deterministic, which could be achieved by contention-free transmission, or approximated in sparse or lightly loaded multihop wireless networks. Our model is a hybrid of time varying adjacency matrix and fluid flow based differential equations, which represent dynamic topology changes and nonstationary network queues, respectively. Numerical experiments show that the hybrid fluid based model can provide reasonably accurate results much more efficiently than standard simulators. Also an example application of the modeling technique is given showing the nonstationary network performance as a function of node mobility, traffic load and wireless link quality. © 2013 IEEE
