日本人大学生を対象にした英語学習ウエブアプリケーションの導入

This case study examines the introduction of web-based apps to Japanese university students for skill-based English learning. The focus is on 32 students from the International Studies and Education departments at a private Japanese university. The course was an elective English course titled,“ Current Events English.” In class, activities consisted of analog speaking activities from the textbook. However, web-based applications were introduced to support class preparation, the midterm, and the final project. The Memrise app for vocab learning was optional for class preparation. Use of Google Classroom was required for accessing the initial class documents, and Cambridge Write & Improve was required or the final project. Data was collected from the applications as well as from student surveys. The findings provide insight into the efficacy of webbased applications for language learning in Japan. It also contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the reticence of Japanese university students to adopt digital modes of language learning.本事例研究では日本人大学生を対象にした英語学習のためのウエブアプリケーション（WA） の適用可能性を明らかにする。対象は国際教育学科と教育経営学科の学生32人である。時事英語（選択教科コース）では主に教科書からのアナログ・スピーキング・アクティビティーを行ったが，授業の事前準備，中間発表，およびファイナルプロジェクトために三つのWAを導入した。学生主体の 事前準備のためにMemriseの語彙学習アプリを使用し，授業のシラバスおよびプリントを手に入れるためにグーグル・クラスルームを必要とした。ファイナルプロジェクトのためにCambridge Write & Improveも必要とした。WAと学生アンケートからデータを収集して分析した。本研究の結果は，日本人学生が言語学習にWAを使用することに控えめであるにもかかわらず，WAが語学学習には有効であるという知識体系を得られた

The role of intercultural communicative competence in the development of World Englishes and Lingua Francas

There is a tendency to think of World Englishes in the noun form; as products rather than as processes (implying that one receives both ready-made, controlling the development of neither).Conceptualising World Englishes as processes in which one can participate as an agent raises the question of what skills are needed in their active construction. The author will argue that since culture resides partly in language, the development of intercultural communicative competence (Byram 1997) should play a pivotal role in foreign language education both to preserve cultural and linguistic diversity, facilitating and enhancing intercultural communication in the process. A range of skills considered central to intercultural communicative competence will be presented and illustrated showing how language students can learn to take control over the development not only of language, but of their own identities

Educational framework for adoption of vocabulary based on Wikipedia linkage and spaced learning

We propose a new educational framework supporting learners in adoption of vocabularyand knowledge for various personalized and engaging pedagogic purposes. The most essentialconcepts of learning topic are linked based on the shortest connecting paths in hyperlink networkof Wikipedia encyclopedia assisted with Wiktionary dictionary. In resulting pedagogic conceptualnetwork learner traverses links along learning path generated by method in sequential processhaving tailored variation and repetition computed based on theory of spaced learning. The learningpath is shown to learner as sequence of compact relation statements extracted from sentencessurrounding hyperlinks in Wikipedia articles, supplied with set of visualizations based on mainverb identified in them. Based on framework we have implemented prototype tool and promisingexperiments in educational setting indicated valuable support for adoption of new knowledge.Peer reviewe

Internationalisation of higher education in South Korea: Reality, rhetoric, and disparity in academic culture and identities

It is not a copy of the record.The central theme of this paper is contradictions: the ways in which official agendas of internationalisation in higher education and academic identity are disturbed by the principles of inclusion and exclusion in the local context of university academic culture. The paper takes the case of South Korea to show how the national policies for the internationalisation of higher education are translated into local cultural practice inside academe. The paper examines specifically (i) what are the ‘positions’ of foreign and female academics in the specific national university context; (ii) how are they constructed by official policies of internationalisation, and (iii) how are they experienced by individuals to form new reflexive identities? Drawing from biographic notes, the paper offers an illustrative analysis of the positioned and positional identities of foreign and female academics and the boundaries of inclusion and exclusion drawn around their identities. The paper is an exploratory one, aimed at future research agendas for a larger theoretical study on internationally mobile academics in different social contexts

Deaf Bodies : Toward a Holistic Ethnography of Deaf People in Japan

This essay is an ethnographic exploration of deaf people in Japan, applying a holistic approach to the body. Deafness is considered as a condition that affects human behavior in terms of adaptation and coping rather than as simply a limiting deficiency/impairment. The bodily interactions of deaf people in their daily lives will be presented as the framework for this paper though Mark Johnson’s philosophy of embodied meaning (2007). The general situation of deaf people in Japan, including academic models, social welfare policies and Deaf/deaf politics, will be organized and presented through the use of Mikhail Bakhtin’s architectonics (1990). The language use of Japanese deaf people, especially their preferred language of Japanese Sign Language (JSL), will be contextualized through the use of Armstrong, Stokoe and Wilcox’s gestural approach to communication (1995). This research is a culmination of extensive long-term participant-observation, language study and data gathering through questionnaires, interviews and photography. How do deaf people in Japan deal with limits – or challenges – of communication with hearing people and among themselves? The paper concludes that for deaf people, the body is a media they use to create text and discourse through the performance of sign language, ultimately displaying a perceived notion of Deaf identity
