    Exact characterization of O(n) tricriticality in two dimensions

    We propose exact expressions for the conformal anomaly and for three critical exponents of the tricritical O(n) loop model as a function of n in the range −2≀n≀3/2-2 \leq n \leq 3/2. These findings are based on an analogy with known relations between Potts and O(n) models, and on an exact solution of a 'tri-tricritical' Potts model described in the literature. We verify the exact expressions for the tricritical O(n) model by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on numerical transfer-matrix calculations.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Restoring the structural status of keys through DFT phase space

    One of the reasons for the widely felt influence of Schenker’s theory is his idea of long-range voice-leading structure. However, an implicit premise, that voice leading is necessarily a relationship between chords, leads Schenker to a reductive method that undermines the structural status of keys. This leads to analytical mistakes as demonstrated by Schenker’s analysis of Brahms’s Second Cello Sonata. Using a spatial concept of harmony based on DFT phase space, this paper shows that Schenker’s implicit premise is in fact incorrect: it is possible to model long-range voice-leading relationships between objects other than chords. The concept of voice leading derived from DFT phases is explained by means of triadic orbits. Triadic orbits are then applied in an analysis of Beethoven’s Heiliger Dankgesang, giving a way to understand the ostensibly “Lydian” tonality and the tonal relationship between the chorale sections and “Neue Kraft” sections

This report puts these two hypotheses to the test and identifies the key requirements for global sectoral industry approaches to work. The analysis is based on ongoing work within a CEPS multi-stakeholder Task Force on “Sectoral industry approaches to address climate change”, supported by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.     Quantifying the reliability of four global datasets for drought monitoring over a semiarid region

    Drought is one of the most relevant natural disasters, especially in arid regions such as Iran. One of the requirements to access reliable drought monitoring is long-term and continuous high-resolution precipitation data. Different climatic and global databases are being developed and made available in real time or near real time by different agencies and centers; however, for this purpose, these databases must be evaluated regionally and in different local climates. In this paper, a near real-time global climate model, a data assimilation system, and two gridded gauge-based datasets over Iran are evaluated. The ground truth data include 50 gauges from the period of 1980 to 2010. Drought analysis was carried out by means of the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) at 2-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month timescales. Although the results show spatial variations, overall the two gauge-based datasets perform better than the models. In addition, the results are more reliable for the western portion of the Zagros Range and the eastern region of the country. The analysis of the onsets of the 6-month moderate drought with at least 3 months’ persistence indicates that all datasets have a better performance over the western portion of the Zagros Range, but display poor performance over the coast of the Caspian Sea. Base on the results of this study, the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) dataset is a preferred alternative for drought analysis in the region when gauge-based datasets are not available

    Time series modelling of sunspot numbers using long range cyclical dependence

    This paper deals with the analysis of the monthly structure of sunspot numbers using a new technique based on cyclical long range dependence. The results show that sunspot numbers have a periodicity of 130 months, but more importantly, that the series is highly persistent, with an order of cyclical fractional integration slightly above 0.30. That means that the series displays long memory, with a large degree of dependence between the observations that tends to disappear very slowly in time

    This article briefly reviews the main aspects of the generic data based mechanistic (DBM) approach to modeling stochastic dynamic systems and shown how it is being applied to the analysis, forecasting, and control of environmental and agricultural systems. The advantages of this inductive approach to modeling lie in its wide range of applicability. It can be used to model linear, nonstationary, and nonlinear stochastic systems, and its exploitation of recursive estimation means that the modeling results are useful for both online and offline applications. To demonstrate the practical utility of the various methodological tools that underpin the DBM approach, the article also outlines several typical, practical examples in the area of environmental and agricultural systems analysis, where DBM models have formed the basis for simulation model reduction, control system design, and forecastin

    Yoga as an adjunct to trauma-focused counselling for survivors of sexual violence:a qualitative study

    Although evidence exists for the therapeutic effectiveness of yoga for people with a range of mental health difficulties, further research is necessary to determine its contribution to recovery from sexual violence. This study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to explore the experience of a group-based Forrest yoga programme for woman recovering from experiences of sexual violence. The main themes to emerge were: the importance of being in a group; yoga as a means of facilitating personal learning and change; yoga as an on-going resource for living. These findings indicate that women recovering from rape and sexual abuse may experience yoga as a potentially valuable adjunct to counselling
