Measuring circularity in food supply chain using life cycle assessment : refining oil from olive kernel

    Get PDF
Valorization of food waste is a potential strategy toward a circular food supply chain. In this regard, measuring the circularity of food waste valorization systems is highly important to better understand multiple environmental impacts. Therefore, this study investigated the circularity of a food waste valorization system (refining oil from olive kernel) using a life cycle assessment methodology. An inventory of an industrial-based olive kernel oil production system is also provided in this study. The system boundary was the cradle to the factory gate of the production system. The results indicated that natural gas consumption was the highest contributor to most of the investigated impact categories. The global warming potential of one kg of oil produced from olive kernel was calculated to be 1.37 kg CO(2)eq. Moreover, the calculated damages of 1 kg oil production from olive kernel to human health, ecosystem quality, and resource depletion were 5.29 x 10(-7) DALY, 0.12 PDF center dot m(2)center dot yr., and 24.40 MJ, respectively

Translation and Translanguaging Pedagogies in Intercomprehension and Multilingual Teaching

Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. Since our students are constantly moving between English and one or more Romance language(s), they actively bring the other Romance languages they are learning into the translingual repertoire they already practice through the multilingual learning strategies deployed in intercomprehension.

Neoadjuvant immune-checkpoint blockade in triple-negative breast cancer: current evidence and literature-based meta-analysis of randomized trials

Chemotherapy based on the sequential use of anthracyclines and taxanes has long represented the most efficacious approach in the management of early-stage, triple-negative breast cancer, whose aggressive behavior is widely renowned. This standard chemotherapy backbone was subsequently enriched by the use of carboplatin, based on its association with increased pathologic complete response and efficacy in the metastatic setting. Following the results from the IMpassion130 trial, the recent approval of the immunotherapic agent atezolizumab in combination with chemotherapy as first-line treatment for programmed-death ligand 1-positive, unresectable locally advanced, or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer increasingly fueled the flourishing of trials of immune-checkpoint inhibitors in the early setting. In this work, we review the most recent inherent literature in light of key methodological issues and provide a quantitative summary of the results from phase II–III randomized trials of immunotherapic agents combined with chemotherapy in the setting of interest. Hints regarding future directions are also discussed

Does selection of variety affect the exergy flow of agricultural production? Rice production system in Italy

    Get PDF
Exergy analysis is receiving considerable attention as an approach to be applied for making decision toward moving to a sustainable and energy-efficient food supply chain. This study focuses on how selection of variety affects the exergy flow of a crop production system (rice production). In this regard, 9 varieties of rice were investigated in Italy, the largest rice producer in Europe. Sensitivity analysis of inputs consumption and the exergy management scenarios of the most sensitive inputs are also provided in this study. The results indicated that the cumulative exergy consumption value of the investigated rice varieties ranges from 11,682 MJha-1 to 15,541 MJha-1. Chemical fertilizers and diesel fuel consumption were the biggest contributors to the total energy consumption in all investigated varieties. Luna variety, with the cumulative degree of perfection value of 3.87 and renewability indicator of 0.74, was identified as the most exergy efficient variety of rice in Italy
