    A Lightweight Modular Continuum Manipulator with IMU-based Force Estimation

    Most aerial manipulators use serial rigid-link designs, which results in large forces when initiating contacts during manipulation and could cause flight stability difficulty. This limitation could potentially be improved by the compliance of continuum manipulators. To achieve this goal, we present the novel design of a compact, lightweight, and modular cable-driven continuum manipulator for aerial drones. We then derive a complete modeling framework for its kinematics, statics, and stiffness (compliance). The modeling framework can guide the control and design problems to integrate the manipulator to aerial drones. In addition, thanks to the derived stiffness (compliance) matrix, and using a low-cost IMU sensor to capture deformation angles, we present a simple method to estimate manipulation force at the tip of the manipulator. We report preliminary experimental validations of the hardware prototype, providing insights on its manipulation feasibility.     Soft, slender and active structures in fluids: embedding Cosserat rods in vortex methods

    We present a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian method for the direct simulation of three-dimensional, heterogeneous structures made of soft fibers and immersed in incompressible viscous fluids. Fiber-based organization of matter is pervasive in nature and engineering, from biological architectures made of cilia, hair, muscles or bones to polymers, composite materials or soft robots. In nature, many such structures are adapted to manipulate flows for feeding, locomotion or energy harvesting, through mechanisms that are often not fully understood. While simulations can support the analysis (and subsequent translational engineering) of these systems, extreme fibers' aspect-ratios, large elastic deformations and two-way coupling with three-dimensional flows, all render the problem numerically challenging. To address this, we couple Cosserat rod theory, which exploits fibers' slenderness to capture their dynamics in one-dimensional, accurate fashion, with vortex methods via a penalty immersed boundary technique. The favorable properties of the resultant hydroelastic solver are demonstrated against a battery of benchmarks, and further showcased in a range of multi-physics scenarios, involving magnetic actuation, viscous streaming, biomechanics, multi-body interaction, and self-propulsion.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

    Functional surface microstructures inspired by nature : From adhesion and wetting principles to sustainable new devices

    In the course of evolution nature has arrived at startling materials solutions to ensure survival. Investigations into biological surfaces, ranging from plants, insects and geckos to aquatic animals, have inspired the design of intricate surface patterns to create useful functionalities. This paper reviews the fundamental interaction mechanisms of such micropatterns with liquids, solids, and soft matter such as skin for control of wetting, self-cleaning, anti-fouling, adhesion, skin adherence, and sensing. Compared to conventional chemical strategies, the paradigm of micropatterning enables solutions with superior resource efficiency and sustainability. Associated applications range from water management and robotics to future health monitoring devices. We finally provide an overview of the relevant patterning methods as an appendix

    Physics and applications of squid-inspired jetting

    In the aquatic world jet propulsion is a highly successful locomotion method utilized by a variety of species. Among them cephalopods such as squids excel in their ability for high-speed swimming. This mechanism inspires the development of underwater locomotion techniques which are particularly useful in soft-bodied robots. In this overview we summarize existing studies on this topic, ranging from investigations on the underlying physics to the creation of mechanical systems utilizing this locomotion mode. Research directions that worth future investigation are also discussed

    Design, fabrication and stiffening of soft pneumatic robots

    Although compliance allows the soft robot to be under-actuated and generalise its control, it also impacts the ability of the robot to exert forces on the environment. There is a trade-off between robots being compliant or precise and strong. Many mechanisms that change robots' stiffness on demand have been proposed, but none are perfect, usually compromising the device's compliance and restricting its motion capabilities. Keeping the above issues in mind, this thesis focuses on creating robust and reliable pneumatic actuators, that are designed to be easily manufactured with simple tools. They are optimised towards linear behaviour, which simplifies modelling and improve control strategies. The principle idea in relation to linearisation is a reinforcement strategy designed to amplify the desired, and limit the unwanted, deformation of the device. Such reinforcement can be achieved using fibres or 3D printed structures. I have shown that the linearity of the actuation is, among others, a function of the reinforcement density and shape, in that the response of dense fibre-reinforced actuators with a circular cross-section is significantly more linear than that of non-reinforced or non-circular actuators. I have explored moulding manufacturing techniques and a mixture of 3D printing and moulding. Many aspects of these techniques have been optimised for reliability, repeatability, and process simplification. I have proposed and implemented a novel moulding technique that uses disposable moulds and can easily be used by an inexperienced operator. I also tried to address the compliance-stiffness trade-off issue. As a result, I have proposed an intelligent structure that behaves differently depending on the conditions. Thanks to its properties, such a structure could be used in applications that require flexibility, but also the ability to resist external disturbances when necessary. Due to its nature, individual cells of the proposed system could be used to implement physical logic elements, resulting in embodied intelligent behaviours. As a proof-of-concept, I have demonstrated use of my actuators in several applications including prosthetic hands, octopus, and fish robots. Each of those devices benefits from a slightly different actuation system but each is based on the same core idea - fibre reinforced actuators. I have shown that the proposed design and manufacturing techniques have several advantages over the methods used so far. The manufacturing methods I developed are more reliable, repeatable, and require less manual work than the various other methods described in the literature. I have also shown that the proposed actuators can be successfully used in real-life applications. Finally, one of the most important outcomes of my research is a contribution to an orthotic device based on soft pneumatic actuators. The device has been successfully deployed, and, at the time of submission of this thesis, has been used for several months, with good results reported, by a patient

    The Design and Development of a Mobile Colonoscopy Robot

    The conventional colonoscopy is a common procedure used to access the colon. Despite it being considered the Gold Standard procedure for colorectal cancer diagnosis and treatment, it has a number of major drawbacks, including high patient discomfort, infrequent but serious complications and high skill required to perform the procedure. There are a number of potential alternatives to the conventional colonoscopy, from augmenting the colonoscope to using Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) - a completely non-invasive method. However, a truly effective, all-round alternative has yet to be found. This thesis explores the design and development of a novel solution: a fully mobile colonoscopy robot called “RollerBall”. Unlike current passive diagnostic capsules, such as PillCam, this device uses wheels at the end of adjustable arms to provide locomotion through the colon, while providing a stable platform for the use of diagnostic and therapeutic tools. The work begins by reviewing relevant literature to better understand the problem and potential solutions. RollerBall is then introduced and its design described in detail. A robust prototype was then successfully fabricated using a 3D printing technique and its performance assessed in a series of benchtop experiments. These showed that the mechanisms functioned as intended and encouraged the further development of the concept. Next, the fundamental requirement of gaining traction on the colon was shown to be possible using hexagonal shaped, macro-scale tread patterns. A friction coefficient ranging between 0.29 and 0.55 was achieved with little trauma to the tissue substrate. The electronics hardware and control were then developed and evaluated in a series of tests in silicone tubes. An open-loop strategy was first used to establish the control algorithm to map the user inputs to motor outputs (wheel speeds). These tests showed the efficacy of the locomotion technique and the control algorithm used, but they highlighted the need for autonomy. To address this, feedback was included to automate the adjusting of the arm angle and amount of force applied by the device; a forward facing camera was also used to automate the orientation control by tracking a user-defined target. Force and orientation control were then combined to show that semi-autonomous control was possible and as a result, it was concluded that clinical use may be feasible in future developments

    A numerical study of fin and jet propulsions involving fluid-structure interactions

    Fish swimming is elegant and efficient, which inspires humans to learn from them to design high-performance artificial underwater vehicles. Research on aquatic locomotion has made extensive progress towards a better understanding of how aquatic animals control their flexible body and fin for propulsion. Although the structural flexibility and deformation of the body and fin are believed to be important features to achieve optimal swimming performance, studies on high-fidelity deformable body and fin with complex material behavior, such as non-uniform stiffness distributions, are rare. In this thesis, a fully coupled three-dimensional high-fidelity fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver is developed to investigate the flow field evolution and propulsion performance of caudal fin and jet propulsion involving body and/or fin deformation. Within this FSI solver, the fluid is resolved by solving unsteady and viscous Navier-Stokes equations based on the finite volume method with a multi-block grid system. The solid dynamics are solved by a nonlinear finite element method. The coupling between the two solvers is achieved in a partitioned approach in which convergence check and sub-iteration are implemented to ensure numerical stability and accuracy. Validations are conducted by comparing the simulation results of classical benchmarks with previous data in the literature, and good agreements between them are obtained. The developed FSI solver is then applied to study the bio-inspired fin and jet propulsion involving body deformation. Specifically, the effect of non-uniform stiffness distributions of fish body and/or fin, key features of fish swimming which have been excluded in most previous studies, on the propulsive performance is first investigated. Simulation results of a sunfish-like caudal fin model and a tuna-inspired swimmer model both show that larger thrust and propulsion efficiency can be achieved by a non-uniform stiffness distribution (e.g., increased by 11.2% and 9.9%, respectively, for the sunfish-like model) compared with a uniform stiffness profile. Despite the improved propulsive e performance, a bionic variable fish body stiffness does not yield fish-like midline kinematics observed in real fish, suggesting that fish movement involves significant active control that cannot be replicated purely by passive deformations. Subsequent studies focus on the jet propulsion inspired by squid locomotion using the developed numerical solver. Simulation results of a two-dimensional inflation-deflation jet propulsion system, whose inflation is actuated by an added external force that mimics the muscle constriction of the mantle and deflation is caused by the release of elastic energy of the structure, suggest larger mean thrust production and higher efficiency in high Reynolds number scenarios compared with the cases in laminar flow. A unique symmetry-breaking instability in turbulent flow is found to stem from irregular internal body vortices, which cause symmetry breaking in the wake. Besides, a three-dimensional squid-like jet propulsion system in the presence of background flow is studied by prescribing the body deformation and jet velocity profiles. The effect of the background flow on the leading vortex ring formation and jet propulsion is investigated, and the thrust sources of the overall pulsed jet are revealed as well. Finally, FSI analysis on motion control of a self-propelled flexible swimmer in front of a cylinder utilizing proportional-derivative (PD) control is conducted. The amplitude of the actuation force, which is applied to the swimmer to bend it to produce thrust, is dynamically tuned by a feedback PD controller to instruct the swimmer to swim the desired distance from an initial position to a target location and then hold the station there.
