    Crop Classification and LAI Estimation Using Original and Resolution-Reduced Images from Two Consumer-Grade Cameras

    Consumer-grade cameras are being increasingly used for remote sensing applications in recent years. However, the performance of this type of cameras has not been systematically tested and well documented in the literature. The objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of original and resolution-reduced images taken from two consumer-grade cameras, a RGB camera and a modified near-infrared (NIR) camera, for crop identification and leaf area index (LAI) estimation. Airborne RGB and NIR images taken over a 6.5-square-km cropping area were mosaicked and aligned to create a four-band mosaic with a spatial resolution of 0.4 m. The spatial resolution of the mosaic was then reduced to 1, 2, 4, 10, 15 and 30 m for comparison. Six supervised classifiers were applied to the RGB images and the four-band images for crop identification, and 10 vegetation indices (VIs) derived from the images were related to ground-measured LAI. Accuracy assessment showed that maximum likelihood applied to the 0.4-m images achieved an overall accuracy of 83.3% for the RGB image and 90.4% for the four-band image. Regression analysis showed that the 10 VIs explained 58.7% to 83.1% of the variability in LAI. Moreover, spatial resolutions at 0.4, 1, 2 and 4 m achieved better classification results for both crop identification and LAI prediction than the coarser spatial resolutions at 10, 15 and 30 m. The results from this study indicate that imagery from consumer-grade cameras can be a useful data source for crop identification and canopy cover estimation

    Using UAV-Based Imagery to Determine Volume, Groundcover, and Growth Rate Characteristics of Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.)

    Plant growth rate is an essential phenotypic parameter for crop physiologists and plant breeders to understand in order to quantify potential crop productivity based on specific stages throughout the growing season. While plant growth rate information can be attained though manual collection of biomass, this procedure is rarely performed due to the prohibitively large effort and destruction of plant material that is required. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer great potential for rapid collection of imagery which can be utilized for quantification of plant growth rate. In this study, six diverse lines of lentil were grown in three replicates of microplots with six biomass collection time-points throughout the growing season over five site-years. Aerial imagery of each biomass collection time point was collected from a UAV and utilized to produce stitched two-dimensional orthomosaics and three-dimensional point clouds. Analysis of this imagery produced quantification of groundcover and vegetation volume on an individual plot basis. Comparison with manually-measured above-ground biomass suggests strong correlation, indicating great potential for UAVs to be utilized in plant breeding programs for evaluation of groundcover and vegetation volume. Nonlinear logistic models were fit to multiple data collection points throughout the growing season. The growth rate and G50, which is the number of growing degree days (GDD) required to accumulate 50 % of maximum growth, parameters of the model are capable of quantifying growth rate, and have potential utility in plant research and plant breeding programs. Predicted maximum volume was identified as a potential proxy for whole-plot biomass measurement. Six new phenotypes have been described that can be accurately and efficiently collected from field trials with the use of UAV’s or other overhead image-collection systems. These phenotypes are; Area Growth Rate, Area G50, Area Maximum Predicted Growth, Volume Growth Rate, Volume G50, and Volume Maximum Predicted Growth

    Estimation of maize yield and effects of variable-rate nitrogen application using UAV-based RGB imagery

    Accurate crop yield estimation is important for agronomic and economic decision-making. This study evaluated the performance of imagery data acquired using a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based imaging system for estimating yield of maize (Zea mays L.) and the effects of variable-rate nitrogen (N) application on crops. Images of a 27-ha maize field were captured using a UAV with a consumer-grade RGB camera flying at ~100 m above ground level at three maize growth stages. The collected sequential images were stitched and the Excess Green (ExG) colour feature was extracted to develop prediction models for maize yield and to examine the effect of the variable-rate N application. Various linear regression models between ExG and maize yield were developed for three sample area sizes (21, 106, and 1058 m2). The model performance was evaluated using coefficient of determination (R2), F-test and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) between estimated and actual yield. All linear regression models between ExG and yield were significant (p ≤ 0.05). The MAPE ranged from 6.2 to 15.1% at the three sample sizes, although R2 values were all \u3c0.5. Prediction error was lower at the later growth stages, as the crop approached maturity, and at the largest sample level. The ExG image feature showed potential for evaluating the effect of variable-rate N application on crop growth. Overall, the low-cost UAV imaging system provided useful information for field management

    Potential phenotyping methodologies to assess inter- and intravarietal variability and to select grapevine genotypes tolerant to abiotic stress

    ReviewPlant phenotyping is an emerging science that combines multiple methodologies and protocols to measure plant traits (e.g., growth, morphology, architecture, function, and composition) at multiple scales of organization. Manual phenotyping remains as a major bottleneck to the advance of plant and crop breeding. Such constraint fostered the development of high throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP), which is largely based on imaging approaches and automatized data retrieval and processing. Field phenotyping still poses major challenges and the progress of HTPP for field conditions can be relevant to support selection and breeding of grapevine. The aim of this review is to discuss potential and current methods to improve field phenotyping of grapevine to support characterization of inter- and intravarietal diversity. Vitis vinifera has a large genetic diversity that needs characterization, and the availability of methods to support selection of plant material (polyclonal or clonal) able to withstand abiotic stress is paramount. Besides being time consuming, complex and expensive, field experiments are also affected by heterogeneous and uncontrolled climate and soil conditions, mostly due to the large areas of the trials and to the high number of traits to be observed in a number of individuals ranging from hundreds to thousands. Therefore, adequate field experimental design and data gathering methodologies are crucial to obtain reliable data. Some of the major challenges posed to grapevine selection programs for tolerance to water and heat stress are described herein.     Rapeseed Seedling Stand Counting and Seeding Performance Evaluation at Two Early Growth Stages Based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Imagery

    The development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and image processing algorithms for field-based phenotyping offers a non-invasive and effective technology to obtain plant growth traits such as canopy cover and plant height in fields. Crop seedling stand count in early growth stages is important not only for determining plant emergence, but also for planning other related agronomic practices. The main objective of this research was to develop practical and rapid remote sensing methods for early growth stage stand counting to evaluate mechanically seeded rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Rapeseed was seeded in a field by three different seeding devices. A digital single-lens reflex camera was installed on an UAV platform to capture ultrahigh resolution RGB images at two growth stages when most rapeseed plants had at least two leaves. Rapeseed plant objects were segmented from images of vegetation indices using typical Otsu thresholding method. After segmentation, shape features such as area, length-width ratio and elliptic fit were extracted from the segmented rapeseed plant objects to establish regression models of seedling stand count. Three row characteristics (the coefficient of variation of row spacing uniformity, the error rate of the row spacing and the coefficient of variation of seedling uniformity) were further calculated for seeding performance evaluation after crop row detection. Results demonstrated that shape features had strong correlations with ground-measured seedling stand count. The regression models achieved R-squared values of 0.845 and 0.867, respectively, for the two growth stages. The mean absolute errors of total stand count were 9.79 and 5.11% for the two respective stages. A single model over these two stages had an R-squared value of 0.846, and the total number of rapeseed plants was also accurately estimated with an average relative error of 6.83%.Moreover, the calculated row characteristics were demonstrated to be useful in recognizing areas of failed germination possibly resulted from skipped or ineffective planting. In summary, this study developed practical UAV-based remote sensing methods and demonstrated the feasibility of using the methods for rapeseed seedling stand counting and mechanical seeding performance evaluation at early growth stages
