    Conservación del patrimonio cultural utilizando nuevos métodos de comunicación: la Pagoda de madera de Yingxian, China

    [EN] Architectural landmarks that represent a culture’s identity are also sanctuaries for cultural heritage preservation. The tallest and oldest wooden multi-story structure in the world, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda of China is tilting at an ongoing rate that requires an urgency to find solutions to revert the damage. To preserve the evolving humanistic and artistic understandings of ancient Chinese architecture, and to cultivate the scientific reasoning behind ancient Chinese carpentry, new media allows digital and computational methods to replace human users who once manually analyzed data and information from cultural sites and artifacts. This article will exemplify new media tools such as animation via 3D/2D modeling, 3D scanning and virtual reality photography to examine material evidence of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda of China, and the role new media can assist in its fight to sustain its originality since 1056.Highlights: Examination, documentation, research and education of architectural heritage sites using new media methods.Integration of old archives and digital/computational software to represent the outstanding value of the oldest and tallest wooden skyscraper in the world.Use of 2D/3D modelling and virtual reality photography developing information to increase awareness on cultural heritage sites suffering wood deterioration.[ES] Los hitos arquitectónicos que representan la identidad de una cultura también son santuarios para la preservación del patrimonio cultural. La pagoda de madera de Yingxian en China, la estructura de madera de varios pisos más alta y antigua del mundo, se inclina a un ritmo constante que requiere encontrar solución es urgentes que reviertan el daño. Para preservar la evolución humanística y la comprensión artística de la antigua arquitectura china, y para cultivar el razonamiento científico detrás de la antigua carpintería china, los nuevos medios de comunicación permiten asistencia digital y computacional a los usuarios humanos que analizaban manualmente los datos y la información de los sitios culturales y los artefactos. La evidencia alcanzada a partir de las investigaciones previas unido a que los métodos de documentación clásicos requerían una comprensión sólida de la información realizada por el investigador, conlleva a que los registros se puedan describir como estáticos y anticuados, y que solo pueden ofrecer información tal y como se presenta. Los nuevos medios de comunicación ofrecen a la Pagoda de madera de Yingxian la última asistencia digital para encontrar descubrimientos que no eran posibles de llevar a cabo en investigaciones anteriores usando los métodos clásicos. La ayuda de programas y herramientas computacionales amplía la evidencia ocultada en los sitios patrimoniales.     Pewabic: "Tiling" the Story of Revitalization in Detroit through a Public Garden

    Faced with the interconnected challenges of population loss, vacant lands, and economic disinvestment, citizens of legacy cities like Detroit increasingly seek opportunities to manufacture their own social, economic, and ecolog - ical revitalization. This master’s project offers a case study exploration of the potential for arts-based revitalization through a campus landscape design for Pewabic Pottery, one of the last surviving pottery studios of the early 20th cen - tury Arts and Crafts era and a widely-appreciated Detroit arts institution. The medium for this exploration is Pewabic’s current 1.5-acre campus, which in - cludes a half-acre of vacant land once occupied by neighboring businesses. The project also considers multiple future scenarios considering purchase of adjacent parcels both vacant and occupied. We adopted a process-orient - ed approach to advance revitalization efforts by drawing connections be - tween arts-based revitalization literature and the slate of participatory design practices used across multiple design disciplines. Methods used to engage Pewabic’s community of stakeholders included a series of design workshops, event tabling, and surveys. With the information gathered from these activi - ties, we developed three concepts for the site: 1) Hospitality, 2) Fusion, and 3) Minimalism. Each concept considers alternative design variables regarding location of a new education studio, relationship with the historic Water Works Park, expansion of Pewabic’s campus to include additional adjacent parcels, and, finally, garden design styles.     Assessment of plastics in the National Trust: a case study at Mr Straw's House

    The National Trust is a charity that cares for over 300 publically accessible historic buildings and their contents across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There have been few previous studies on preservation of plastics within National Trust collections, which form a significant part of the more modern collections of objects. This paper describes the design of an assessment system which was successfully trialled at Mr Straws House, a National Trust property in Worksop, UK. This system can now be used for future plastic surveys at other National Trust properties. In addition, the survey gave valuable information about the state of the collection, demonstrating that the plastics that are deteriorating are those that are known to be vulnerable, namely cellulose nitrate/acetate, PVC and rubber. Verifying this knowledge of the most vulnerable plastics enables us to recommend to properties across National Trust that these types should be seen as a priority for correct storage and in-depth recording

    Guam is an island in the Marianas that, over time, has experienced a rich cultural history brought about by its exposure to colonization, natural disasters, warfare and the continual influx of people and culture. Therefore, the architecture that exists on the island is one that divides itself into four distinct styles with each as a response to external forces that affected the island. By researching each of these styles, one is able to fully understand the holistic view of Guam’s history in order to design architecture that reflects the past with anticipation for the future. This thesis works to explore the four styles by understanding their strengths and shortcomings in order to use this knowledge to design a Cultural Center for Art and Architecture where each style is represented

Through the design of a pavilion for Canada at the Shanghai World Exposition in 2010 this thesis aims to draw these elements together to stand as a critique of the single family home that is their apotheosis.     Uniquely Korea: Retaining Visual Authenticity in Cultural Presentations

    As educators and creators seek to introduce students to cultures from around the world to increase cultural awareness, visual media has also become a powerful tool to disseminate the visual culture of a people. When media misrepresents a culture, the introduction to the culture can be flawed and create more problems. How then can media creators ensure that their representations are accurate? This project proposes that careful research balanced with an observation of the culture’s visual presentations can help guide cultural representations toward authenticity. This research specifically explores the problem of misrepresenting traditional Korean culture in American media. The generalization of East Asian cultures in American media caused by both past events and current events has lead to a distorted view of Korea. However, good representations of traditional Korean culture can help eliminate these stereotypes and generalizations by demonstrating the uniqueness and richness of Korean culture. Through research of traditional Korean cultural elements like hanbok, hanshik, architecture, Hangul, and pottery as well as visual observations of Korean visual media, this study aims to demonstrate the importance of viewing cultural objects in context and through the eyes of the members of the culture. Because the misrepresentation of Korean culture stems in part from limited American education on historical Korea, the end goal of this research project was to create an illustrated book for American elementary school children that will introduce them to an authentic and informative representation of historical Korea.     Honor and Destruction: The Conflicted Object in Moral Rights Law

    In 1990, the Copyright Act was amended to name visual artists, alone among protected authors, possessors of moral rights, a set of non-economic intellectual property rights originating in nineteenth-century Europe. Although enhancing authors\u27 rights in a user-oriented system was a novel undertaking, it was rendered further anomalous by the statute\u27s designated class, given copyright\u27s longstanding alliance with text. And although moral rights epitomize the legacy of the Romantic author as a cultural trope embedded in the law, American culture offered little to support or explain the apparent privileging of visual artists over other authors. What, if not a legal or cultural disposition toward visual artists, precipitated the enactment of a moral rights statute like the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 (\u27\u27VARA )? This Article demonstrates that the answer is less related to authorship concerns than would reasonably be surmised from a doctrine premised on the theory that a creative work embodies the author\u27s honor, personhood, and even soul
