    Effects of haloperidol and atypical neuroleptics on psychomotor performance and driving ability in schizophrenic patients - Results from an experimental study

    The influence of antipsychotic treatment on the neuropsychological and psychomotor performance of schizophrenic patients is still a subject of investigation. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of atypical neuroleptics in comparison with a conventional dopamine antagonist neuroleptic (haloperidol) on several dimensions of psychomotor performance (visual perception, attention, reaction time, and sensorimotor performance) considered to be of relevance in evaluating driving fitness. Psychomotor performance was assessed by means of the ART 90, a computerized Act and React Test which is generally used in diagnosis of psychomotor performance. The 49 participating patients were examined at discharge following psychopathological stabilisation; 20 received haloperidol, 29 received an atypical neuroleptic. Our findings demonstrate a remarkably reduced psychomotor performance in the haloperidol-treated group of schizophrenic patients compared with patients treated with atypical neuroleptics. Only 1 (5%) subject passed all subtests without major failures and could be regarded as competent to drive. Among patients with atypical neuroleptics, 7 patients (24%) passed all test parameters without major failures. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel

    ABSTRACT The objectives of this research are: 1) to know the characteristic of psychomotor performance assesment based on scientific approach in authentic assesment framework on bacteria experiment x class senior high school; 2) to know the feasibility of psychomotor performance assesment based on scientific approach in authentic assesment framework on bacteria experiment x class senior high school; 3) to know the effectiveness of psychomotor performance assesment based on scientific approach in authentic assesment framework on bacteria experiment x class senior high school. The development research uses Research and Development model (R&D) refering to the 4-D model that has been modified, such as: 1) define; 2) desaign; 3) development; and 4) implementation. The analysis of research data uses two techniques are descriptive and qualitative. The result of the research are as follows: 1) the characteristic of psychomotor performance assesment on bacteria experiment based on scientific approach in authentic assesment framework is in the form of performance assessment rubric that refers to scientific approach such as: observation, asking, finding information, associating, giving conclusion, and comunicating; the developed performance assesment rubric is completed with criteria and assesment format of student work; 2) the feasibility of psychomotor performance assesment product based on scientific approach is valid through constract validity and content validity are very good; 3) The effectiveness of psychomotor performance assessment is indicated by significant differences of average value of psychomotor performance between performance assessment class and exiting learning class, that receiving average score 87,88 for the performance assessment class and 80,95 for the exiting learning class.     Psychomotor performance in video games

    Introduction: Interactive electronic games allow to access virtual environments and interact using a computer or TV screen. Anyone who has played a video game, or seen others playing, is aware of the importance of reaction speed and eye-hand coordination skills. Objective: To determine the differences in psychomotor performance between professional gamers and amateurs. Material and Methods:  A total of 62 gamers took part in the study, including 31 people - professional video game users who had participated in e-tournaments in the last month (age: M = 20.6, SD = 6.3) and 31 people who did not play video games or played very rarely (they declared that they did not participate in e-sports tournaments), who constituted the control group (age: M = 17.9, SD = 5.4). Integrated computer SDP-System with an executive module for stimulus generation and reception was used to assess psychomotor performance. Results: Professional gamers have higher psychomotor skills than amateurs. They reveal better results for fast thinking, motor reactions, perception, attention, and working memory. Conclusion: Playing video games has a positive impact on players' psychomotor performance and can promote improvements in elementary cognitive functions.     Not only a problem of fatigue and sleepiness: Changes in psychomotor performance in Italian nurses across 8-h rapidly rotating shifts

    Although many studies have detailed the consequences of shift work in nurses concerning health, fatigue, sleepiness, or medical errors, no study has been carried out trying to disentangle the contribution of sleepiness and fatigue associated to shift work from the attentional performance. The aim of this pilot study is (A) to investigate the effects of an 8-h rapidly rotating shift on fatigue and sleepiness among staff nurses and (B) how these factors affect their psychomotor performance. Fourteen nurses were selected for a within-subject cross-sectional study according to this sequence of shifts: morning–afternoon–night, which were compared as function of tiredness, sleepiness, and performance at the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT). Subsequently, a within-subject Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) evaluated if the observed differences between shifts persist when the contribution of sleepiness is controlled. Our results clearly indicate that night shifts are associated with significant greater sleepiness and tiredness, and worsened performance at the PVT. As hypothesized, ANCOVA showed that these differences disappear when the contribution of sleepiness is controlled. Results point to a lower psychomotor performance in night compared to day shifts that depends on sleepiness. Hence, interventions to minimize the consequences of the night shift should consider a reduction of sleepiness
