    Performance Management in ATM Networks

    ATM is representative of the connection-oriented resource provisioning classof protocols. The ATM network is expected to provide end-to-end QoS guaranteesto connections in the form of bounds on delays, errors and/or losses. Performancemanagement involves measurement of QoS parameters, and application of controlmeasures (if required) to improve the QoS provided to connections, or to improvethe resource utilization at switches. QoS provisioning is very important for realtimeconnections in which losses are irrecoverable and delays cause interruptionsin service. QoS of connections on a node is a direct function of the queueing andscheduling on the switch. Most scheduling architectures provide static allocationof resources (scheduling priority, maximum buffer) at connection setup time. Endto-end bounds are obtainable for some schedulers, however these are precluded forheterogeneously composed networks. The resource allocation does not adapt to theQoS provided on connections in real time. In addition, mechanisms to measurethe QoS of a connection in real-time are scarce.In this thesis, a novel framework for performance management is proposed. Itprovides QoS guarantees to real time connections. It comprises of in-service QoSmonitoring mechanisms, a hierarchical scheduling algorithm based on dynamicpriorities that are adaptive to measurements, and methods to tune the schedulers atindividual nodes based on the end-to-end measurements. Also, a novel scheduler isintroduced for scheduling maximum delay sensitive traffic. The worst case analysisfor the leaky bucket constrained traffic arrivals is presented for this scheduler. Thisscheduler is also implemented on a switch and its practical aspects are analyzed.In order to understand the implementability of complex scheduling mechanisms,a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art technology used in the industry isperformed. The thesis also introduces a method of measuring the one-way delayand jitter in a connection using in-service monitoring by special cells

    Quality of service modeling and analysis for carrier ethernet

    Today, Ethernet is moving into the mainstream evolving into a carrier grade technology. Termed as Carrier Ethernet it is expected to overcome most of the\ud shortcomings of native Ethernet. It is envisioned to carry services end-to-end serving corporate data networking and broadband access demands as well as backhauling wireless traffic. As the penetration of Ethernet increases, the offered Quality of Service (QoS) will become increasingly important and a distinguishing factor between different service providers. The challenge is to meet the QoS requirements of end applications such as response times, throughput, delay and jitter by managing the network resources at hand. Since Ethernet was not designed to operate in large public networks it does not possess functionalities to address this issue. In this thesis we propose and analyze mechanisms which improve the QoS performance of Ethernet enabling it to meet the demands of the current and next generation services and applications.\u

    Resource dimensioning in a mixed traffic environment

    An important goal of modern data networks is to support multiple applications over a single network infrastructure. The combination of data, voice, video and conference traffic, each requiring a unique Quality of Service (QoS), makes resource dimensioning a very challenging task. To guarantee QoS by mere over-provisioning of bandwidth is not viable in the long run, as network resources are expensive. The aim of proper resource dimensioning is to provide the required QoS while making optimal use of the allocated bandwidth. Dimensioning parameters used by service providers today are based on best practice recommendations, and are not necessarily optimal. This dissertation focuses on resource dimensioning for the DiffServ network architecture. Four predefined traffic classes, i.e. Real Time (RT), Interactive Business (IB), Bulk Business (BB) and General Data (GD), needed to be dimensioned in terms of bandwidth allocation and traffic regulation. To perform this task, a study was made of the DiffServ mechanism and the QoS requirements of each class. Traffic generators were required for each class to perform simulations. Our investigations show that the dominating Transport Layer protocol for the RT class is UDP, while TCP is mostly used by the other classes. This led to a separate analysis and requirement for traffic models for UDP and TCP traffic. Analysis of real-world data shows that modern network traffic is characterized by long-range dependency, self-similarity and a very bursty nature. Our evaluation of various traffic models indicates that the Multi-fractal Wavelet Model (MWM) is best for TCP due to its ability to capture long-range dependency and self-similarity. The Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) is able to model occasional long OFF-periods and burstiness present in UDP traffic. Hence, these two models were used in simulations. A test bed was implemented to evaluate performance of the four traffic classes defined in DiffServ. Traffic was sent through the test bed, while delay and loss was measured. For single class simulations, dimensioning values were obtained while conforming to the QoS specifications. Multi-class simulations investigated the effects of statistical multiplexing on the obtained values. Simulation results for various numerical provisioning factors (PF) were obtained. These factors are used to determine the link data rate as a function of the required average bandwidth and QoS. The use of class-based differentiation for QoS showed that strict delay and loss bounds can be guaranteed, even in the presence of very high (up to 90%) bandwidth utilization. Simulation results showed small deviations from best practice recommendation PF values: A value of 4 is currently used for both RT and IB classes, while 2 is used for the BB class. This dissertation indicates that 3.89 for RT, 3.81 for IB and 2.48 for BB achieve the prescribed QoS more accurately. It was concluded that either the bandwidth distribution among classes, or quality guarantees for the BB class should be adjusted since the RT and IB classes over-performed while BB under-performed.     Analytical characterization of inband and outband D2D Communications for network access

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorCooperative short-range communication schemes provide powerful tools to solve interference and resource shortage problems in wireless access networks. With such schemes, a mobile node with excellent cellular connectivity can momentarily accept to relay traffic for its neighbors experiencing poor radio conditions and use Device-to-Device (D2D) communications to accomplish the task. This thesis provides a novel and comprehensive analytical framework that allows evaluating the effects of D2D communications in access networks in terms of spectrum and energy efficiency. The analysis covers the cases in which D2D communications use the same bandwidth of legacy cellular users (in-band D2D) or a different one (out-band D2D) and leverages on the characterization of underlying queueing systems and protocols to capture the complex intertwining of short-range and legacy WiFi and cellular communications. The analysis also unveils how D2D affects the use and scope of other optimization techniques used for, e.g., interference coordination and fairness in resource distribution. Indeed, characterizing the performance of D2D-enabled wireless access networks plays an essential role in the optimization of system operation and, as a consequence, permits to assess the general applicability of D2D solutions. With such characterization, we were able to design several mechanisms that improve system capabilities. Specifically, we propose bandwidth resource management techniques for controlling interference when cellular users and D2D pairs share the same spectrum, we design advanced and energy-aware access selection mechanisms, we show how to adopt D2D communications in conjunction with interference coordination schemes to achieve high and fair throughputs, and we discuss on end-to-end fairness—beyond the use of access network resources—when D2D communications is adopted in C-RAN.     Quality-of-service management in IP networks

    Quality of Service (QoS) in Internet Protocol (IF) Networks has been the subject of active research over the past two decades. Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS architectures have emerged as proposed standards for resource allocation in IF Networks. These two QoS architectures support the need for multiple traffic queuing systems to allow for resource partitioning for heterogeneous applications making use of the networks. There have been a number of specifications or proposals for the number of traffic queuing classes (Class of Service (CoS)) that will support integrated services in IF Networks, but none has provided verification in the form of analytical or empirical investigation to prove that its specification or proposal will be optimum. Despite the existence of the two standard QoS architectures and the large volume of research work that has been carried out on IF QoS, its deployment still remains elusive in the Internet.     Resource allocation in ATM networks

    The areas of resource allocation ancl congestion control in ATM networks have been investigated. ATM networks and the guarantees given to users have been reviewed and a new model of ATM networking has been proposed. To aid the analysis of ATM network issues, performance modelling and simulation methods have been reviewed. Typical sources have been designed : a two-state Markov model for voice ; a multi-state Markov one layer variable bit rate video source model ; an empirical file transfer data source model ; and some basic network elements. The models have been verified and validated on a discrete event simulator. It was shown that there are problems when using ATM over satellite links. A model for the noise analysed from real satellite links was developed. Based on this model a new more efficient protocol for assembling ATM cells was proposed and simulated. Again at the cell level, the traffic that can pass the standardised conformance test and still produce the worst performance in the network was investigated. Counter to the traditional wisdom it was found that the on-off source does not always produce the worst case traffic. Users have been classified with new parameters, and it has been shown that these new classes of users can still be given guarantees without giving traffic descriptors. Adaptive user classes have been modelled mathematically. A new model for efficiency has been developed, which includes both network issues and economic issues. This new model defines congestion and also describes how to allocate resources when congested. It has been shown that this economic model coupled with the adaptive user classes allow for an increase in both network and economic efficiency simultaneously for some sample cases
