    Mobility of bodies in contact. I. A 2nd-order mobility index formultiple-finger grasps

    Using a configuration-space approach, the paper develops a 2nd-order mobility theory for rigid bodies in contact. A major component of this theory is a coordinate invariant 2nd-order mobility index for a body, B, in frictionless contact with finger bodies A1,...A k. The index is an integer that captures the inherent mobility of B in an equilibrium grasp due to second order, or surface curvature, effects. It differentiates between grasps which are deemed equivalent by classical 1st-order theories, but are physically different. We further show that 2nd-order effects can be used to lower the effective mobility of a grasped object, and discuss implications of this result for achieving new lower bounds on the number of contacting finger bodies needed to immobilize an object.     Robust variance-constrained H∞ control for stochastic systems with multiplicative noises

The norm-bounded parametric uncertainties enter into both the system and output matrices. The purpose of the problem is to design a state feedback controller such that, for all admissible parameter uncertainties, (1) the closed-loop system is exponentially mean-square quadratically stable; (2) the individual steady-state variance satisfies given upper bound constraints; and (3) the prescribed noise attenuation level is guaranteed in an H∞ sense with respect to the additive noise disturbances. A general framework is established to solve the addressed multiobjective problem by using a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, where the required stability, the H∞ characterization and variance constraints are all easily enforced. Within such a framework, two additional optimization problems are formulated: one is to optimize the H∞ performance, and the other is to minimize the weighted sum of the system state variances.     An ontology framework for developing platform-independent knowledge-based engineering systems in the aerospace industry

    This paper presents the development of a novel knowledge-based engineering (KBE) framework for implementing platform-independent knowledge-enabled product design systems within the aerospace industry. The aim of the KBE framework is to strengthen the structure, reuse and portability of knowledge consumed within KBE systems in view of supporting the cost-effective and long-term preservation of knowledge within such systems. The proposed KBE framework uses an ontology-based approach for semantic knowledge management and adopts a model-driven architecture style from the software engineering discipline. Its phases are mainly (1) Capture knowledge required for KBE system; (2) Ontology model construct of KBE system; (3) Platform-independent model (PIM) technology selection and implementation and (4) Integration of PIM KBE knowledge with computer-aided design system. A rigorous methodology is employed which is comprised of five qualitative phases namely, requirement analysis for the KBE framework, identifying software and ontological engineering elements, integration of both elements, proof of concept prototype demonstrator and finally experts validation. A case study investigating four primitive three-dimensional geometry shapes is used to quantify the applicability of the KBE framework in the aerospace industry. Additionally, experts within the aerospace and software engineering sector validated the strengths/benefits and limitations of the KBE framework. The major benefits of the developed approach are in the reduction of man-hours required for developing KBE systems within the aerospace industry and the maintainability and abstraction of the knowledge required for developing KBE systems. This approach strengthens knowledge reuse and eliminates platform-specific approaches to developing KBE systems ensuring the preservation of KBE knowledge for the long term

    We show that the mode corresponding to the point of essential spectrum of the electromagnetic scattering operator is a vector-valued distribution representing the square root of the three-dimensional Dirac's delta function. An explicit expression for this singular mode in terms of the Weyl sequence is provided and analyzed. An essential resonance thus leads to a perfect localization (confinement) of the electromagnetic field, which in practice, however, may result in complete absorption.Comment: 14 pages, no figure

    Flatness-based Deformation Control of an Euler-Bernoulli Beam with In-domain Actuation

    This paper addresses the problem of deformation control of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with in-domain actuation. The proposed control scheme consists in first relating the system model described by an inhomogeneous partial differential equation to a target system under a standard boundary control form. Then, a combination of closed-loop feedback control and flatness-based motion planning is used for stabilizing the closed-loop system around reference trajectories. The validity of the proposed method is assessed through well-posedness and stability analysis of the considered systems.
