    CORADD: Correlation Aware Database Designer for Materialized Views and Indexes

    We describe an automatic database design tool that exploits correlations between attributes when recommending materialized views (MVs) and indexes. Although there is a substantial body of related work exploring how to select an appropriate set of MVs and indexes for a given workload, none of this work has explored the effect of correlated attributes (e.g., attributes encoding related geographic information) on designs. Our tool identifies a set of MVs and secondary indexes such that correlations between the clustered attributes of the MVs and the secondary indexes are enhanced, which can dramatically improve query performance. It uses a form of Integer Linear Programming (ILP) called ILP Feedback to pick the best set of MVs and indexes for given database size constraints. We compare our tool with a state-of-the-art commercial database designer on two workloads, APB-1 and SSB (Star Schema Benchmark---similar to TPC-H).     Integration of Data Mining and Data Warehousing: a practical methodology

    The ever growing repository of data in all fields poses new challenges to the modern analytical systems. Real-world datasets, with mixed numeric and nominal variables, are difficult to analyze and require effective visual exploration that conveys semantic relationships of data. Traditional data mining techniques such as clustering clusters only the numeric data. Little research has been carried out in tackling the problem of clustering high cardinality nominal variables to get better insight of underlying dataset. Several works in the literature proved the likelihood of integrating data mining with warehousing to discover knowledge from data. For the seamless integration, the mined data has to be modeled in form of a data warehouse schema. Schema generation process is complex manual task and requires domain and warehousing familiarity. Automated techniques are required to generate warehouse schema to overcome the existing dependencies. To fulfill the growing analytical needs and to overcome the existing limitations, we propose a novel methodology in this paper that permits efficient analysis of mixed numeric and nominal data, effective visual data exploration, automatic warehouse schema generation and integration of data mining and warehousing. The proposed methodology is evaluated by performing case study on real-world data set.     An XML Query Engine for Network-Bound Data

    XML has become the lingua franca for data exchange and integration across administrative and enterprise boundaries. Nearly all data providers are adding XML import or export capabilities, and standard XML Schemas and DTDs are being promoted for all types of data sharing. The ubiquity of XML has removed one of the major obstacles to integrating data from widely disparate sources –- namely, the heterogeneity of data formats. However, general-purpose integration of data across the wide area also requires a query processor that can query data sources on demand, receive streamed XML data from them, and combine and restructure the data into new XML output -- while providing good performance for both batch-oriented and ad-hoc, interactive queries. This is the goal of the Tukwila data integration system, the first system that focuses on network-bound, dynamic XML data sources. In contrast to previous approaches, which must read, parse, and often store entire XML objects before querying them, Tukwila can return query results even as the data is streaming into the system. Tukwila is built with a new system architecture that extends adaptive query processing and relational-engine techniques into the XML realm, as facilitated by a pair of operators that incrementally evaluate a query’s input path expressions as data is read. In this paper, we describe the Tukwila architecture and its novel aspects, and we experimentally demonstrate that Tukwila provides better overall query performance and faster initial answers than existing systems, and has excellent scalability

    CubiST++: Evaluating Ad-Hoc CUBE Queries Using Statistics Trees

    We report on a new, efficient encoding for the data cube, which results in a drastic speed-up of OLAP queries that aggregate along any combination of dimensions over numerical and categorical attributes. We are focusing on a class of queries called cube queries, which return aggregated values rather than sets of tuples. Our approach, termed CubiST++ (Cubing with Statistics Trees Plus Families), represents a drastic departure from existing relational (ROLAP) and multi-dimensional (MOLAP) approaches in that it does not use the view lattice to compute and materialize new views from existing views in some heuristic fashion. Instead, CubiST++ encodes all possible aggregate views in the leaves of a new data structure called statistics tree (ST) during a one-time scan of the detailed data. In order to optimize the queries involving constraints on hierarchy levels of the underlying dimensions, we select and materialize a family of candidate trees, which represent superviews over the different hierarchical levels of the dimensions. Given a query, our query evaluation algorithm selects the smallest tree in the family, which can provide the answer. Extensive evaluations of our prototype implementation have demonstrated its superior run-time performance and scalability when compared with existing MOLAP and ROLAP systems

    The SDSS SkyServer, Public Access to the Sloan Digital Sky Server Data

    The SkyServer provides Internet access to the public Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data for both astronomers and for science education. This paper describes the SkyServer goals and architecture. It also describes our experience operating the SkyServer on the Internet.     Evaluating partitioning and bucketing strategies for Hive-based Big Data Warehousing systems

    Hive has long been one of the industry-leading systems for Data Warehousing in Big Data contexts, mainly organizing data into databases, tables, partitions and buckets, stored on top of an unstructured distributed file system like HDFS. Some studies were conducted for understanding the ways of optimizing the performance of several storage systems for Big Data Warehousing. However, few of them explore the impact of data organization strategies on query performance, when using Hive as the storage technology for implementing Big Data Warehousing systems. Therefore, this paper evaluates the impact of data partitioning and bucketing in Hive-based systems, testing different data organization strategies and verifying the efficiency of those strategies in query performance. The obtained results demonstrate the advantages of implementing Big Data Warehouses based on denormalized models and the potential benefit of using adequate partitioning strategies. Defining the partitions aligned with the attributes that are frequently used in the conditions/filters of the queries can significantly increase the efficiency of the system in terms of response time. In the more intensive workload benchmarked in this paper, overall decreases of about 40% in processing time were verified.     Context-aware OLAP for textual data warehouses

    Decision Support Systems (DSS) that leverage business intelligence are based on numerical data and On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is often used to implement it. However, business decisions are increasingly dependent on textual data as well. Existing research work on textual data warehouses has the limitation of capturing contextual relationships when comparing only strongly related documents. This paper proposes an Information System (IS) based context-aware model that uses word embedding in conjunction with agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithms to dynamically categorize documents in order to form the concept hierarchy. The results of the experimental evaluation provide evidence of the effectiveness of integrating textual data into a data warehouse and improving decision making through various OLAP operations
