    Get PDF
8 pages, 5 figures.-- Contributed to: 7th International Conference on the Unified Modeling Language (UML'2004, Lisbon, Portugal, Oct 11-15, 2004).Multiple efforts have been devoted to face the problem of database modelling. One of them is the automatization of database design process using CASE tools. Frequently, these tools do not completely support all phases of database analysis and the design methodology that they propose. Therefore, we propose to incorporate new features to these tools enhancing them and solving some of the modelling problems. In this paper we present an add-in module that aims to generate triggers for preserving the multiplicity constraints of a conceptual scheme in the transformation to a relational scheme. The module is integrated into the RATIONAL ROSE case tool.Publicad

An integrated product and process information modelling system for on-site construction

    Get PDF
The inadequate infrastructure that exists for seamless project team communications has its roots in the problems arising from fragmentation, and the lack of effective co-ordination between stages of the construction process. The use of disparate computer-aided engineering (CAE) systems by most disciplines is one of the enduring legacies of this problem and makes information exchange between construction team members difficult and, in some cases, impossible. The importance of integrating modelling techniques with a view to creating an integrated product and process model that is applicable to all stages of a construction project's life cycle, is being recognised by the Construction Industry. However, improved methods are still needed to assist the developer in the definition of information model structures, and current modelling methods and standards are only able to provide limited assistance at various stages of the information modelling process. This research investigates the role of system integration by reviewing product and process information models, current modelling practices and modelling standards in the construction industry, and draws conclusions with similar practices from other industries, both in terms of product and process representation, and model content. It further reviews various application development tools and information system requirements to support a suitable integrated information structure, for developing an integrated product and process model for design and construction, based on concurrent engineering principles. The functional and information perspectives of the integrated model, which were represented using IDEFO and the unified modelling language (UML), provided the basis for developing a prototype hyper-integrated product and process information modelling system (HIPPY). Details of the integrated conceptual model's implementation, practical application of the prototype system, using house-building as an example, and evaluation by industry practitioners are also presented. It is concluded that the effective integration of product and process information models is a key component of the implementation of concurrent engineering in construction, and is a vital step towards providing richer information representation, better efficiency, and the flexibility to support life cycle information management during the construction stage of small to medium sized-building projects

Acceptance of teaching staff is an important process that aims to improve the productivity of a company's performance. The reception of teaching staff at the LPIA Hamlet Zamrud Bekasi still uses conventional methods so it requires a long time in the management process. Seeing this, it is necessary to have a computerized data management and decision making system for prospective teaching staff based on predetermined criteria namely micro teaching, teaching experience, recent education and age. In implementing a decision support system using the Simple Addictive Weighting (SAW) method, this method was chosen because in its calculation it can determine the weight values for each attribute, then proceed with the ranking process which will choose the best alternative from several alternatives based on the weights and criteria that have been set specify it. By using criteria to assist in the development and development of decision support systems for system development using the RAD (Rapid Application Development) method. Design and system analysis uses Unified Modeling Language (UML). By using the SAW method, the decision making for teaching staff acceptance becomes easier so that it speeds up the decision making process for teaching staff acceptance.   Keywords: Decision Support Systems, Rapid Application Development, Simple Additive Weighting, Teaching Staff, Unified Modeling Language.   Abstrak   Penerimaan staff pengajar merupakan suatu proses penting yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas kinerja suatu perusahaan. Innovative Trends in Process-Oriented Quality Management within Railway Transport

    Get PDF
It is currently a pressing problem to identify quality not only before the start of transportation and during it but also after the end of transportation. Apparently, in the area of service provision in railway transport, it is important to take into account the fact that customers’ requirements change over time, and thus a new software approach is required. Therefore, this paper is focused on the newest solution to monitoring process quality applied to railway companies by using various types of appropriate software. This approach is particularly significant within the whole transportation chain and also through division into its single constituent stages. In comparison with previously used methods, the established research methodology is unique, universal, and applicable to various types of companies in the context of the introduction of new trends in process-oriented quality management. Consequently, it was supported by software solutions using various quality areas defined within the research and software support, namely through Business Process Modelling Notation, Event-Driven Process Chain, and Unified Modelling Language with links to brand-new software. This focus, therefore, involves more than just knowing what customer requirements are about, but understanding how it is possible to accomplish quality targets and which operational failure should be solved in the first place

Specification of business rules for the development of hospital alarm system: application to the pharmaceutical validation.

6 pagesInternational audienceAlthough clinical alarm systems are part of the knowledge management setting within healthcare organisations, modelling of business processes related to decision support and knowledge representation of decision rules are seldom described. We propose a customization of the Unified Process that takes into account user requirements for clinical alarm systems by introducing the Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR). This methodology was applied to the design and implementation of a clinical alarm system for pharmaceutical validation at the European Hospital Georges Pompidou (HEGP). Rules were implemented using the IlogJRules Business Rule Management System. We produced 3 business rules patterns and 427 instances of rules. As SBVR is close to natural language, pharmacists were able to understand rules and participate to their design

An exploration of key information models and their relationships in global manufacturing decision support

    Get PDF
Global manufacturing businesses are beginning to benefit from the information and knowledge support provided by modern IT tools such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Customer Relations Management (CRM). Many types of information and knowledge, from customer requirements through product information to global enterprise manufacturing capability are involved in global manufacturing decisions. Understanding the appropriate structures and relationships for this information and knowledge is a significant issue if effective wide-ranging support is to be provided. This paper focuses on global manufacturing decision support and explores three key types of information and knowledge relationship: (a) relationships between information and knowledge elements within a single information and knowledge model; (b) relationships between different information and knowledge models at one organizational level; (c) relationships between different information and knowledge models at different organizational levels. The corresponding information and knowledge structures have been presented with Unified Modelling Language (UML) to show the multiplicity of relationship required, and these are explored with an experimental system based on Rational Unified Process, Visual C++, and object-oriented DBMS ObjectStore. A case study has been pursued to explore the application of the information and knowledge models to a real industry environment

A model-based approach to the development of distributed control systems

Distributed Control Systems (DCS) are a class of application with specific characteristics. This type of system is used in industrial environments to control manufacturing processes. Usually they comprise a controller, a fieldbus network, and a set of Of-The-Shelf (OTS) components, interfacing process signals with real-time QoS requirements. In this paper we present a Model Driven Development (MDD) method that targets this category of systems. This method focuses on the critical stages of DCS development. Namely, the specification of system requirements, the choice of OTS modules and fieldbus system, and the validation of the design using real-time analysis tools. This MDD method uses the Unified modelling Language (UML) as support notation, including the extensions defined in the UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time Specification.Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia; FEDER – Project METHODES (POSI/37334/CHS/2001)

Generic unified modelling process for developing semantically rich, dynamic and temporal models

    Get PDF
Models play a vital role in supporting a range of activities in numerous domains. We rely on models to support the design, visualisation, analysis and representation of parts of the world around us, and as such significant research effort has been invested into numerous areas of modelling; including support for model semantics, dynamic states and behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. Whilst these efforts have increased our capabilities and allowed us to create increasingly powerful software-based models, the process of developing models, supporting tools and /or data structures remains difficult, expensive and error-prone. In this paper we define from literature the key factors in assessing a model’s quality and usefulness: semantic richness, support for dynamic states and object behaviour, temporal data storage and visualisation. We also identify a number of shortcomings in both existing modelling standards and model development processes and propose a unified generic process to guide users through the development of semantically rich, dynamic and temporal models

Community care system design and development with AUML

    Get PDF
An approach to the development of an appropriate agent environment is described in which software researchers collaborate with environment builders to enhance the levels of cooperation and support provided within an integrated agent-oriented community system. Agent-oriented Unified Modelling Language (AUML) is a practical approach to the analysis, design, implementation and management of such a software agent system, whilst providing the power and expressiveness necessary to support the specification, design and organisation of a health care service. This paper describes the background of agent-based health care and the fundamental concepts of Agentoriented UML and outlines how this refreshing approach can be used in the analysis, design, development and organization of agent-based community health care systems. Our approach to building agent-oriented software development solutions emphasizes the importance of AUML as a fundamental initial step in producing agent-based architectures and applications. This approach aims to present an effective schedule and methodology for an agent software development process, by addressing the complex agent environments decomposition, abstraction, organization and software development process activities characteristics, whilst reducing the complexity of the complex agent systems' design and development by using and exploiting AUML's productivity potential
