Challenges in the Design and Implementation of IoT Testbeds in Smart-Cities : A Systematic Review
Advancements in wireless communication and the increased accessibility to low-cost sensing and data processing IoT technologies have increased the research and development of urban monitoring systems. Most smart city research projects rely on deploying proprietary IoT testbeds for indoor and outdoor data collection. Such testbeds typically rely on a three-tier architecture composed of the Endpoint, the Edge, and the Cloud. Managing the system's operation whilst considering the security and privacy challenges that emerge, such as data privacy controls, network security, and security updates on the devices, is challenging. This work presents a systematic study of the challenges of developing, deploying and managing urban monitoring testbeds, as experienced in a series of urban monitoring research projects, followed by an analysis of the relevant literature. By identifying the challenges in the various projects and organising them under the V-model development lifecycle levels, we provide a reference guide for future projects. Understanding the challenges early on will facilitate current and future smart-cities IoT research projects to reduce implementation time and deliver secure and resilient testbeds
Executable Models and Instance Tracking for Decentralized Applications on Blockchains and Cloud Platforms -- Metamodel and Implementation
Decentralized applications rely on non-centralized technical infrastructures
and coordination principles. Without trusted third parties, their execution is
not controlled by entities exercising centralized coordination but is instead
realized through technologies supporting distribution such as blockchains and
serverless computing. Executing decentralized applications with these
technologies, however, is challenging due to the limited transparency and
insight in the execution, especially when involving centralized cloud
platforms. This paper extends an approach for execution and instance tracking
on blockchains and cloud platforms permitting distributed parties to observe
the instances and states of executable models. The approach is extended with
(1.) a metamodel describing the concepts for instance tracking on cloud
platforms independent of concrete models or implementation, (2.) a
multidimensional data model realizing the concepts accordingly, permitting the
verifiable storage, tracking, and analysis of execution states for distributed
parties, and (3.) an implementation on the Ethereum blockchain and Amazon Web
Services (AWS) using state machine models. Towards supporting decentralized
applications with high scalability and distribution requirements, the approach
establishes a consistent view on instances for distributed parties to track and
analyze the execution along multiple dimensions such as specific clients and

An empirical investigation of the relationship between integration, dynamic capabilities and performance in supply chains
This research aimed to develop an empirical understanding of the relationships between integration,
dynamic capabilities and performance in the supply chain domain, based on which, two conceptual
frameworks were constructed to advance the field. The core motivation for the research was that, at
the stage of writing the thesis, the combined relationship between the three concepts had not yet
been examined, although their interrelationships have been studied individually.
To achieve this aim, deductive and inductive reasoning logics were utilised to guide the qualitative
study, which was undertaken via multiple case studies to investigate lines of enquiry that would
address the research questions formulated. This is consistent with the author’s philosophical
adoption of the ontology of relativism and the epistemology of constructionism, which was considered
appropriate to address the research questions. Empirical data and evidence were collected, and
various triangulation techniques were employed to ensure their credibility. Some key features of
grounded theory coding techniques were drawn upon for data coding and analysis, generating two
levels of findings. These revealed that whilst integration and dynamic capabilities were crucial in
improving performance, the performance also informed the former. This reflects a cyclical and
iterative approach rather than one purely based on linearity. Adopting a holistic approach towards
the relationship was key in producing complementary strategies that can deliver sustainable supply
chain performance.
The research makes theoretical, methodological and practical contributions to the field of supply
chain management. The theoretical contribution includes the development of two emerging
conceptual frameworks at the micro and macro levels. The former provides greater specificity, as it
allows meta-analytic evaluation of the three concepts and their dimensions, providing a detailed
insight into their correlations. The latter gives a holistic view of their relationships and how they are
connected, reflecting a middle-range theory that bridges theory and practice. The methodological
contribution lies in presenting models that address gaps associated with the inconsistent use of
terminologies in philosophical assumptions, and lack of rigor in deploying case study research
methods. In terms of its practical contribution, this research offers insights that practitioners could
adopt to enhance their performance. They can do so without necessarily having to forgo certain
desired outcomes using targeted integrative strategies and drawing on their dynamic capabilities
Quantum Computing and IS - Harnessing the Opportunities of Emerging Technologies
Emerging technologies have high potential for impact and are worthy of attention by the Information Systems (IS) community. To date, IS has not been able to lead the research and teaching of emerging technologies in their early stages, arguably because: (1) IS researchers often lack knowledge of the foundational principles of such emerging technologies, and (2) during the emerging phase, there is insufficient data on adoption, use, and impact of these technologies. To overcome these challenges, the IS discipline must be willing to break its own disciplinary research boundaries to go beyond software applications and their related management issues and start studying emerging technologies before they are massively adopted by industry. In this paper, we use quantum computing as an exemplar emerging technology and outline a research and education agenda for IS to harness its opportunities. We propose that IS researchers may conduct rigorous research in emergent technologies through collaboration with researchers from other disciplines. We also see a role for IS researchers in the scholarship of emerging technologies that is of introducing emerging technology in IS curricula
Multitenant Containers as a Service (CaaS) for Clouds and Edge Clouds
Cloud computing, offering on-demand access to computing resources through the
Internet and the pay-as-you-go model, has marked the last decade with its three
main service models; Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service
(PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). The lightweight nature of containers
compared to virtual machines has led to the rapid uptake of another in recent
years, called Containers as a Service (CaaS), which falls between IaaS and PaaS
regarding control abstraction. However, when CaaS is offered to multiple
independent users, or tenants, a multi-instance approach is used, in which each
tenant receives its own separate cluster, which reimposes significant overhead
due to employing virtual machines for isolation. If CaaS is to be offered not
just at the cloud, but also at the edge cloud, where resources are limited,
another solution is required. We introduce a native CaaS multitenancy
framework, meaning that tenants share a cluster, which is more efficient than
the one tenant per cluster model. Whenever there are shared resources,
isolation of multitenant workloads is an issue. Such workloads can be isolated
by Kata Containers today. Besides, our framework esteems the application
requirements that compel complete isolation and a fully customized environment.
Node-level slicing empowers tenants to programmatically reserve isolated
subclusters where they can choose the container runtime that suits application
needs. The framework is publicly available as liberally-licensed, free,
open-source software that extends Kubernetes, the de facto standard container
orchestration system. It is in production use within the EdgeNet testbed for
researchers

Cyberbullying in educational context
Kustenmacher and Seiwert (2004) explain a man’s inclination to resort to technology in his interaction with the environment and society. Thus, the solution to the negative consequences of Cyberbullying in a technologically dominated society is represented by technology as part of the technological paradox (Tugui, 2009), in which man has a dual role, both slave and master, in the interaction with it. In this respect, it is noted that, notably after 2010, there have been many attempts to involve artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize, identify, limit or avoid the manifestation of aggressive behaviours of the CBB type. For an overview of the use of artificial intelligence in solving various problems related to CBB, we extracted works from the Scopus database that respond to the criterion of the existence of the words “cyberbullying” and “artificial intelligence” in the Title, Keywords and Abstract. These articles were the subject of the content analysis of the title and, subsequently, only those that are identified as a solution in the process of recognizing, identifying, limiting or avoiding the manifestation of CBB were kept in the following Table where we have these data synthesized and organized by years
Human-Centered Approach to Technology to Combat Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is a serious crime that continues to plague the United States. With the rise of computing technologies, the internet has become one of the main mediums through which this crime is facilitated. Fortunately, these online activities leave traces which are invaluable to law enforcement agencies trying to stop human trafficking. However, identifying and intervening with these cases is still a challenging task. The sheer volume of online activity makes it difficult for law enforcement to efficiently identify any potential leads. To compound this issue, traffickers are constantly changing their techniques online to evade detection. Thus, there is a need for tools to efficiently sift through all this online data and narrow down the number of potential leads that a law enforcement agency can deal with. While some tools and prior research do exist for this purpose, none of these tools adequately address law enforcement user needs for information visualizations and spatiotemporal analysis. Thus to address these gaps, this thesis contributes an empirical study of technology and human trafficking. Through in-depth qualitative interviews, systemic literature analysis, and a user-centered design study, this research outlines the challenges and design considerations for developing sociotechnical tools for anti-trafficking efforts. This work further contributes to the greater understanding of the prosecution efforts within the anti-trafficking domain and concludes with the development of a visual analytics prototype that incorporates these design considerations.Ph.D
