AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN COMPREHENDING ENGLISH READING TEXT AT SMP BUKIT RAYA PEKANBARU

Prima Aradi (2021) : An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending English Reading Text at SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru
This research aims to identify the students‟ difficult aspects of the eighth grade students of SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru in comprehending English reading texts. Besides that, this research also aims to identify factors causing the students‟ difficulties in comprehending English reading texts at the eighth grade students of SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru. By using the qualitative research with case study design, the researcher collected the data from the documents, which was the result of the students‟ test on recount text to find the students‟ ability in comprehending English reading text at SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru. After analyzing the documents, the researcher interviewed the students and the English teacher to find the data about the students‟ difficulties in comprehending the English reading text, and to find the factors causing the difficulties in comprehending the English reading text. The result of this research shows that the eight grade students of SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru got the difficulties in comprehending the English reading text, especially in determining main idea, found detail informations, and understanding vocabulary. But, the students only get a little difficulties in locating reference and making inference. However, the factors that causing the students‟ difficulties in comprehending English reading text for the eight grade students of SMP Bukit Raya Pekanbaru is because they have lack vocabulary. So, they are difficult to understand the meaning of the text. Finally, they can not comprehend the text clearly. This research also indicated that the students have less motivated and interest to learn English. Some of them just learn English just because they have to. Then the researcher also indicated that the teacher didn‟t give the students the tips to comprehend the text clearly. The teacher only asked the students to translate the text. Based on the finding above, the researcher recommend to the teacher to use the suitable strategy to improve the students‟ motivation to read and develop their ability to comprehend the English reading text.

THE EFFECT OF USING KAHOOT APPLICATION AND SEMANTIC MAPPING STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ WRITING ABILITY AT ISLAMIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan peningkatan yang
signifikan dengan menggunakan Aplikasi Kahoot dan Strategi Pemetaan Semantik
terhadap Kemampuan Menulis Siswa di SMP Islam. Penelitian ini merupakan
penelitian komparatif dengan menggunakan quasi-experimental design
nonequivalent pre-test and post-test group design atau dua kelompok dijadikan
sebagai kelompok eksperimen. Populasinya adalah dua kelas di kelas tujuh, dua
kelas di kelas delapan, dan dua kelas di kelas sembilan. Jumlah populasi sebanyak
167 siswa dan jumlah sampel sebanyak 2 kelas yang terdiri dari 50 siswa. Sampel
penelitian diambil dengan menggunakan convenience sampling. Data
dikumpulkan melalui Pre-test dan Post-test. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan
Paired Sample T-test, Independent Sample T-test dan Effect size. Hasil dari
penelitian ini adalah; pertama, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan kemampuan
menulis siswa menggunakan Aplikasi Kahoot dan tanpa menggunakan Aplikasi
Kahoot. Kedua, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan menulis
siswa yang menggunakan Strategi Pemetaan Semantik dan tanpa menggunakan
Strategi Pemetaan Semantik. Ketiga, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan
kemampuan menulis siswa antara menggunakan Aplikasi Kahoot dan
menggunakan Strategi Pemetaan Semantik. Penggunaan Aplikasi Kahoot efektif
pada tingkat sedang terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa. Penggunaan Strategi
Pemetaan Semantik efektif pada tingkat sedang. Oleh karena itu, Strategi
Pemetaan Semantik lebih meningkat secara signifikan daripada Aplikasi Kahoot.
Hal ini membuktikan bahwa strategi Semantic Mapping lebih tepat diterapkan
pada siswa kelas VIII MTs. Muhammadiyah 8 Siabu
THE ROLE OF JAVANESE CULTURE IN CHARACTER BUILDING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Nowadays, character education becomes a major concern in Indonesia. Character development has been done
by various strategy, but the results is yet to be seen. Character development should beginin elementary school
in order that the children's charactercould formed early so that it could be developed until they are mature.
One of the efforts of character building is integrating the local wisdom in learning. One of them is the
Javanese culture. Javanese culture has a variety of rules called the "unggah-ungguh" that always give good
models to the public community, especially to the Javanese. Along with the times, the Javanese culture that
upholds ethics began to degraded and replaced by foreign cultures that came later. The parents’ roles in
instilling the Javanese culture to their children also decreased gradually. This paper will examine the Javanese
culture’s roles toward the character building in elementary schools’ students. Descriptive method supported by
a depth review of the literature and the previous studies is used in this paper as a method. Based on the results
of these reviews, we obtain some information about the types and mechanisms of Javanese culture in character
building of students, especially elementary school students
PROCEEDING THE 2nd INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON LINGUISTICS (ISOL-2): Language and Civilization
ISOL is a biennial international seminar held by the Linguistics Graduate Program of Faculty of Humanity, Andalas University in collaboration with the Linguistic Society of Indonesia (MLI), Unand Chapter. ISOL aims to provide a discussion platform for linguists and language observers across Indonesia. Its main objective is to enhance the exchange of research and new approaches in language studies. The seminar is open to interested people from outside of Indonesia. The theme of the 2nd ISOL is Language and Civilization.
Civilization is the process by which a society or place reaches an advanced stage of social development and organization. It is also defined as the society, culture, and way of life of a particular area. Over time, the word civilization has come to imply something beyond the organization. It refers to a particular shared way of thinking about the world as well as a reflection on that world in art, literature, drama and a host of other cultural happenings. Language is itself a social construct – a component of social reality. Thus, like all social constructs and conventions, it can be changed.
A civilization is any complex state society which is characterized by urban development, social stratification, symbolic communication forms and a perceived separation from and domination over the natural environment. To advance civilization is to construct a new social reality which emerges through language. In other words, social reality is the operational expression of words and the meanings of them that society has agreed upon. Language is itself a social construct – a component of social reality. Thus, like all social constructs and conventions, it can be changed
Narrative Approach in Training Programme for Teachers
This article's purpose is to describe the examples of Narrative Approach and its relevance in teacher training programme in Malaysia. The paper begins with the discussion of the current Moral Education (ME) in Malaysia together with their Moral Education teacher training programme. Then this article will describe on how Narrative Approach can take part as a method that can developed moral reasoning of preservice teacher in their training programme. A variety of teaching technique such as drama, role-play, storytelling, etc. will be considered as strategies for infusing Narrative Approach as an educational approach in teachers‟ training programme in Malaysia, particularly in Moral Education field
