    The megageomorphology of the radar rivers of the eastern Sahara

    The Eastern Sahara is devoid of surface drainage; this unusual characteristic distinguishes its morphology from that of most other desert regions where running water dominates landscape development. A map derived from SIR-A/B and LANDSAT images and the literature, shows the major presently known paleodrainages in the Eastern Sahara. This compilation permits consideration of the key questions: Where did the radar rivers come from and where did they go? Analysis of SIR-A data led McCauley et al. to suggest that the radar rivers, because of their southwestward trends, once flowed into the Chad basin. This key North African feature is a regional structural low formed in the Early Cretaceous in response to initial opening of the South Atlantic. The problem of the origin of headwaters for the radar rivers was less tractable. The idea that the source areas of the radar rivers might originally have been the same as those later captured by the Nile was proposed tentatively. A more extensive review of the Cenozoic tectonic history of North Africa reveals no reason now to suppose that the Central African tributaries of the present Nile were ever connected to the large alluvial valleys in southwestern Egypt and northwestern Sudan. formed in the Early Cretaceous in response to initial opening of the South Atlantic.     Improved water and land management in the Ethiopian highlands and its impact on downstream stakeholders dependent on the Blue Nile – short title Upstream-Downstream in Blue Nile River project is one of the projects in the Nile Basin supported by the CPWF. It was implemented during from 2007 to 2009 through a partnership of 8 institutions. The Blue Nile is the major tributary of the Nile River, contributing about 62% of the Nile flow at Aswan. About two thirds of the area of this densely populated basin is in the highlands and hence receives fairly high levels of annual rainfall of 800 to 2,200 mm. However, the rainfall is erratic in terms of both spatial and temporal distribution with prolonged dry spells and drought often leading to crop failures. Currently, water resources are only marginally exploited in the upper basin but are much more developed in the downstream reaches. The population, located in the downstream part of the Blue Nile, is dependent on the river water for supplementary irrigation and energy production. Canal and reservoir siltation is a major problem, adding the burdens of poor riparian farmers. This project was envisaged to improve the scientific understanding of the land and water resources of the basin, and hypothesized that with increased scientific knowledge of the hydrological, watershed, and institutional processes of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia (Abbay), constraints to up-scaling adaptable best practices and promising technologies (technical, socio-economic, institutional) could be overcome, which will result in significant positive impacts for both upstream and downstream communities and state

    The Relevance and Contribution of the UN Watercourses Convention toward Resolving the Problems in the Nile Basin

    One of the major problems in the Nile basin with respect to the utilization and management of the water is to strike a balance between patting the water in a reasonable manner and causing no significant harm to the existing uses. So far, the Nile basin states could not, however, forge a comprehensive legal framework to resolve the problem. Since there are no sound rules and principles acceptable to all the riparian states at present, one may resort to the UN Watercourses Convention- the only global Convention in place that governs the utilization, management, and development of shared water resources for non-navigational purposes. The article aims at probing the relevance and contribution of the Convention toward crafting cooperative arrangement and thereby reversing the current patterns of the utilization and management of the waters of the Nile , which is iniquitous. In spite of the fact that most of the Nile basin states present during the session of the General Assembly for the adoption of the Convention abstained from voting in favor of it, it is concluded that the Convention is relevant to the Nile basin and incorporates important principles and rules that could help address the problems in the basin.     The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: A Window of Opportunity or a Door for Exclusion?

    The Nile River is one of the longest rivers in the world that flows through 11 countries. The Blue Nile River is a tributary to the Nile River, which starts from the highland of Ethiopia and contributes around 85% of water flow to the Nile that flows upstream into the Mediterranean Sea. With the aims to solve the water problem and enhance their development, the Ethiopian government started building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile River in 2011. Since this river is a tributary to the Nile River, many spectators questioned how Ethiopia has the jurisdiction to build a dam over a river that is transnational. There have been various legislation agreements established, but very few have had significant impact to lessen the tension. Most notably, to solidify each country’s adequate supply, the UN adopted the Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses in 1997, which attempted to set standards around the usage and conservation of watercourses. Though this convention can help resolve the geopolitical tension over the GERD’s construction on the Nile River, it does not solve the question of Ethiopia’s right to build a dam that could impact other countries water supply. Therefore, in 1999, the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) grants each country that the Nile River flows through, the right to adequately use the Nile\u27s water supply. However, Egypt is one of the countries that originally did not sign the CFA. The Nile is Egypt’s primary source for freshwater. Egypt’s main concern is since their population continues to grow, their freshwater supply will deplete. Though it may be perceived to negatively impact Egypt, the GERD seems to benefit countries, especially Ethiopia and Sudan, in terms of economic development. Hence, I am to explore how the GERD will benefit and restrict Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt’s commercial growth.     Facing the growing problem of the electric power consumption in Egyptian residential building using building performance simulation program

    Egypt has been experiencing recurrent power cuts especially at the summer, with the problem being made worse by the extra demands placed on the electrical grid by the advent of the holy month of Ramadan. Electricity shortages are now a problem in Cairo, Alexandria, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, Aswan, and Nubia, as well as in the Nile Delta governorates of Beheira and Qalioubiya. The aim of this study is to develop a model for the Egyptian residential building using Building Performance Simulation Program and make sensitivity analysis on some variables effecting the electric power consumption in order to help faceting the growing problem in Egypt. The model was created using the IES-VE 2012 (Integrated Environmental Solution ). The simulation model was verified against the survey data for the Egyptian apartment and same model simulated using energy Plus simulation tool. The results of the program describing different situations for energy using profile for the air conditions, lighting and equipments in respect to building layout and construction climate and pattern of use. This model can be used in the future to help in reducing the electric power consumption in the residential building

    International Policies and Conventions on International Rivers and the Rights of Ethiopia to Construct Dam on Nile River: The Case of the Great Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia

    Sustainable transboundary water resources managements are challenged by water governance problem. Equitable and reasonable use of water resources shared by co-basin countries requires reliable common agreements. International water laws such as UN Watercourses (1997), Helsinki Rules (1966) have provided vital legal instruments for effective management and negotiation over international water courses. However, Nile River use and development has challenged for last several decades due to discriminatory bilateral agreements made during colonial periods. The Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) provided to achieve equitable use of Nile River and promote regional socioeconomic development is important step advancing to stop unfair water allocation and claim in the region. The enduring claim over water share and use by Egypt and Sudan referring colonial era agreements are unacceptable because they denied legal and natural rights of the upstream countries as well as opposed international water law. With this respect, Ethiopia has natural and legal right to construct Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The downstream countries (Egypt and Sudan) should ratify CFA and respect international water laws. Therefore, mutually acceptable cooperative commitment amongst the riparian states of the Nile basin is the only necessary condition for promoting sustainable use and development Nile River as well as achieving peace and security in the Nile river basin.     West Nile Fever (WNF) is the most common arbovirus infection caused by West Nile Virus (WNV), which has been responsible for numerous epidemic outbreaks of disease among humans, birds and horses on all continents, with the exception of Antarctica, over the past two decades. On the territory of Ukraine, the earliest reports of cases of WNV circulation in humans and birds relate to the 70s of the XX century. In Poltava region WNF was first registered in 2011. Though the epidemiological and clinical patterns of WNF in Ukraine and Poltava region remain understudied, primarily due to the lack of alertness of practitioners to the problem of WNF and to broader access to laboratory diagnosis of the disease.
