    Aging concrete structures: a review of mechanics and concepts

    The safe and cost-efficient management of our built infrastructure is a challenging task considering the expected service life of at least 50 years. In spite of time-dependent changes in material properties, deterioration processes and changing demand by society, the structures need to satisfy many technical requirements related to serviceability, durability, sustainability and bearing capacity. This review paper summarizes the challenges associated with the safe design and maintenance of aging concrete structures and gives an overview of some concepts and approaches that are being developed to address these challenges

    Performance Boundary Identification for the Evaluation of Automated Vehicles using Gaussian Process Classification

    Safety is an essential aspect in the facilitation of automated vehicle deployment. Current testing practices are not enough, and going beyond them leads to infeasible testing requirements, such as needing to drive billions of kilometres on public roads. Automated vehicles are exposed to an indefinite number of scenarios. Handling of the most challenging scenarios should be tested, which leads to the question of how such corner cases can be determined. We propose an approach to identify the performance boundary, where these corner cases are located, using Gaussian Process Classification.     A hierarchical Bayesian regression framework for enabling online reliability estimation and condition-based maintenance through accelerated testing

    Thanks to the advances in the Internet of Things (IoT), Condition-based Maintenance (CBM) has progressively become one of the most renowned strategies to mitigate the risk arising from failures. Within any CBM framework, non-linear correlation among data and variability of condition monitoring data sources are among the main reasons that lead to a complex estimation of Reliability Indicators (RIs). Indeed, most classic approaches fail to fully consider these aspects. This work presents a novel methodology that employs Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) as multiple sources of data to define the impact of relevant PVs on RIs, and subsequently, plan maintenance actions through an online reliability estimation. For this purpose, a Generalized Linear Model (GLM) is exploited to model the relationship between PVs and an RI, while a Hierarchical Bayesian Regression (HBR) is implemented to estimate the parameters of the GLM. The HBR can deal with the aforementioned uncertainties, allowing to get a better explanation of the correlation of PVs. We considered a numerical example that exploits five distinct operating conditions for ALT as a case study. In this paper we relate these cardinal virtues to the correct methodological approaches that researchers should follow when setting up a fault injection experiment. With this work we try to understand where the "straightforward pathway" lies, in order to highlight those common methodological errors that deeply influence the coherency and the meaningfulness of fault injection experiments.     Comparison of material properties of SCC concrete with steel fibres related to ingress of chlorides

    The paper focuses on the evaluation of chloride ion diffusion coefficient of self-compacting concrete with steel fibre reinforcement. The reference concrete from Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) with several values of added steel fibres-0%, 1% and 2% of weight-were cast in order to investigate the effect of fibres. The three procedures of diffusion coefficient calculation are presented-rapid chloride penetration test, accelerated penetration tests with chloride as well as the surface measurement of electrical resistivity using Wenner probe. The resulting diffusion coefficients obtained by all methods are compared and evaluated regarding the basic mechanical properties of concrete mixtures.Web of Science103art. no. 22
