To this end, having multiple controllers improves resilience and distributes network control overhead. However, when there is a disruption in the control plane, a rapid and performant controller-switch assignment is critical, which is a challenging technical question. In this work, we propose a proactive switch assignment approach in case of controller failures using a genetic algorithm based heuristic that considers controller load distribution, reassignment cost and probability of failure. Moreover, we compare the performance of our scheme with random and greedy algorithms. Experiment results show that our proposed PREFCP framework has better performance in terms of probability of failure and controller load distributio
SPIDER: Fault Resilient SDN Pipeline with Recovery Delay Guarantees
When dealing with node or link failures in Software Defined Networking (SDN),
the network capability to establish an alternative path depends on controller
reachability and on the round trip times (RTTs) between controller and involved
switches. Moreover, current SDN data plane abstractions for failure detection
(e.g. OpenFlow "Fast-failover") do not allow programmers to tweak switches'
detection mechanism, thus leaving SDN operators still relying on proprietary
management interfaces (when available) to achieve guaranteed detection and
recovery delays. We propose SPIDER, an OpenFlow-like pipeline design that
provides i) a detection mechanism based on switches' periodic link probing and
ii) fast reroute of traffic flows even in case of distant failures, regardless
of controller availability. SPIDER can be implemented using stateful data plane
abstractions such as OpenState or Open vSwitch, and it offers guaranteed short
(i.e. ms) failure detection and recovery delays, with a configurable trade off
between overhead and failover responsiveness. We present here the SPIDER
pipeline design, behavioral model, and analysis on flow tables' memory impact.
We also implemented and experimentally validated SPIDER using OpenState (an
OpenFlow 1.3 extension for stateful packet processing), showing numerical
results on its performance in terms of recovery latency and packet losses.Comment: 8 page
Software Defined Networks based Smart Grid Communication: A Comprehensive Survey
The current power grid is no longer a feasible solution due to
ever-increasing user demand of electricity, old infrastructure, and reliability
issues and thus require transformation to a better grid a.k.a., smart grid
(SG). The key features that distinguish SG from the conventional electrical
power grid are its capability to perform two-way communication, demand side
management, and real time pricing. Despite all these advantages that SG will
bring, there are certain issues which are specific to SG communication system.
For instance, network management of current SG systems is complex, time
consuming, and done manually. Moreover, SG communication (SGC) system is built
on different vendor specific devices and protocols. Therefore, the current SG
systems are not protocol independent, thus leading to interoperability issue.
Software defined network (SDN) has been proposed to monitor and manage the
communication networks globally. This article serves as a comprehensive survey
on SDN-based SGC. In this article, we first discuss taxonomy of advantages of
SDNbased SGC.We then discuss SDN-based SGC architectures, along with case
studies. Our article provides an in-depth discussion on routing schemes for
SDN-based SGC. We also provide detailed survey of security and privacy schemes
applied to SDN-based SGC. We furthermore present challenges, open issues, and
future research directions related to SDN-based SGC.Comment: Accepte
Software defined networking: meeting carrier grade requirements
Software Defined Networking is a networking paradigm which allows network operators to manage networking elements using software running on an external server. This is accomplished by a split in the architecture between the forwarding element and the control element. Two technologies which allow this split for packet networks are ForCES and Openflow. We present energy efficiency and resilience aspects of carrier grade networks which can be met by Openflow. We implement flow restoration and run extensive experiments in an emulated carrier grade network. We show that Openflow can restore traffic quite fast, but its dependency on a centralized controller means that it will be hard to achieve 50 ms restoration in large networks serving many flows. In order to achieve 50 ms recovery, protection will be required in carrier grade networks
Fast emergency paths schema to overcome transient link failures in ospf routing
A reliable network infrastructure must be able to sustain traffic flows, even
when a failure occurs and changes the network topology. During the occurrence
of a failure, routing protocols, like OSPF, take from hundreds of milliseconds
to various seconds in order to converge. During this convergence period,
packets might traverse a longer path or even a loop. An even worse transient
behaviour is that packets are dropped even though destinations are reachable.
In this context, this paper describes a proactive fast rerouting approach,
named Fast Emergency Paths Schema (FEP-S), to overcome problems originating
from transient link failures in OSPF routing. Extensive experiments were done
using several network topologies with different dimensionality degrees. Results
show that the recovery paths, obtained by FEPS, are shorter than those from
other rerouting approaches and can improve the network reliability by reducing
the packet loss rate during the routing protocols convergence caused by a
failure.Comment: 18 page
Smart Flow Steering Agent for End-to-End Delay Improvement in Software-Defined Networks
يتقوم أداة التوجيه الذكية المقترحة في هذه الورقة البحثية من فتح أفقاً جديداً لنشر أدوات ذكية جديدة في شبكة SDN تعزز قابلية برمجة الشبكات وإدارتها .To ensure fault tolerance and distributed management, distributed protocols are employed as one of the major architectural concepts underlying the Internet. However, inefficiency, instability and fragility could be potentially overcome with the help of the novel networking architecture called software-defined networking (SDN). The main property of this architecture is the separation of the control and data planes. To reduce congestion and thus improve latency and throughput, there must be homogeneous distribution of the traffic load over the different network paths. This paper presents a smart flow steering agent (SFSA) for data flow routing based on current network conditions. To enhance throughput and minimize latency, the SFSA distributes network traffic to suitable paths, in addition to supervising link and path loads. A scenario with a minimum spanning tree (MST) routing algorithm and another with open shortest path first (OSPF) routing algorithms were employed to assess the SFSA. By comparison, to these two routing algorithms, the suggested SFSA strategy determined a reduction of 2% in packets dropped ratio (PDR), a reduction of 15-45% in end-to-end delay according to the traffic produced, as well as a reduction of 23% in round trip time (RTT). The Mininet emulator and POX controller were employed to conduct the simulation. Another advantage of the SFSA over the MST and OSPF is that its implementation and recovery time do not exhibit fluctuations. The smart flow steering agent will open a new horizon for deploying new smart agents in SDN that enhance network programmability and management
A Hybrid Model to Extend Vehicular Intercommunication V2V through D2D Architecture
In the recent years, many solutions for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V)
communication were proposed to overcome failure problems (also known as dead
ends). This paper proposes a novel framework for V2V failure recovery using
Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. Based on the unified Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) architecture, LTE-based D2D mechanisms can improve
V2V dead ends failure recovery delays. This new paradigm of hybrid V2V-D2D
communications overcomes the limitations of traditional V2V routing techniques.
According to NS2 simulation results, the proposed hybrid model decreases the
end to end delay (E2E) of messages delivery. A complete comparison of different
D2D use cases (best & worst scenarios) is presented to show the enhancements
brought by our solution compared to traditional V2V techniques.Comment: 6 page
