The memory of the portuguese First Republic throughout the twentieth century

The Portuguese First Republic (1910-1926) is still today a historical period marked by the controversies it generated. Despite its overall failure as an attempt to democratize and modernize the country, the regime left a powerful legacy in the collective memory, acritically glorified or condemned, depending on whether it fueled the apologetic and proselytic view of the utopia-to-be or, in contrast, the devilish view of a close-to-anarchy and Jacobin-like experience. This text analyzes the way in which the First Republic’s memory became a topic for heated debate, marking out positions and projecting them onto the appreciations that successive Portuguese generations were to make on this matter throughout the twentieth century.A Primeira República Portuguesa (1910-1926) é ainda hoje um período histórico marcado pelas controvérsias que suscitou. Apesar do seu fracasso geral, como tentativa de democratização e modernização do país, ela deixou um poderoso legado na memória colectiva, acriticamente glorificado ou condenado, consoante alimentou a visão apologética e proselitista da utopia tentada ou, em contraste, a visão demoníaca de uma experiência anárquica e jacobina. Este texto analisa a forma como a memória da Primeira República se tornou um tópico de acesa discussão, extremando posições e projectando-as na própria leitura que gerações sucessivas de portugueses foram fazendo dela ao longo do século XX

Si vis Pacem, Cole Iustitiam. A Century of International Labour Organization

In 2019 the International Labour Organization celebrated its 100th anniversary. Established after the end of World War I, the organization aimed to improve working conditions and support actions for workers’ rights by negotiating labour standards through tripartite concertation involving representatives of employers, employees and governments, and by ensuring, through social justice, long-term global peace. Over the years, the ILO has developed methods of action allowing for achieving those goals by actively participating in solving the evolving problems of the world of work and labour. The article attempts to summarize the achievements of the ILO in the 1919–2019 period by analysing the directions of action and outlining the evolution of the activities of the organization

What Makes a "Leading" Case

The theme developed in the paper is that what makes a leading case is not immediately apparent or able to be captured in a short definition. The crucial questions are how and why a case is seen to be or to have been particularly influential in settling an area of the law. Exploring these questions necessarily involves viewing the case in its historical context. Economic and behavioural implications and impacts should also be kept in mind.The paper draws on empirical research involving retired judges, experienced lawyers and judges' clerks and on specialist essays by senior academic lawyers produced for the 50th anniversary conference of the Court of Appeal in 2008. The research results show how much room there is for differing assessments of significance. The second half of the paper discusses a range of appeal cases explaining how and why the Court focussed on particular matters of significance in deciding the cases
