Logic Programming approaches for routing fault-free and maximally-parallel Wavelength Routed Optical Networks on Chip (Application paper)
One promising trend in digital system integration consists of boosting
on-chip communication performance by means of silicon photonics, thus
materializing the so-called Optical Networks-on-Chip (ONoCs). Among them,
wavelength routing can be used to route a signal to destination by univocally
associating a routing path to the wavelength of the optical carrier. Such
wavelengths should be chosen so to minimize interferences among optical
channels and to avoid routing faults. As a result, physical parameter selection
of such networks requires the solution of complex constrained optimization
problems. In previous work, published in the proceedings of the International
Conference on Computer-Aided Design, we proposed and solved the problem of
computing the maximum parallelism obtainable in the communication between any
two endpoints while avoiding misrouting of optical signals. The underlying
technology, only quickly mentioned in that paper, is Answer Set Programming
(ASP). In this work, we detail the ASP approach we used to solve such problem.
Another important design issue is to select the wavelengths of optical
carriers such that they are spread across the available spectrum, in order to
reduce the likelihood that, due to imperfections in the manufacturing process,
unintended routing faults arise. We show how to address such problem in
Constraint Logic Programming on Finite Domains (CLP(FD)).

A Multi-Engine Approach to Answer Set Programming
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a truly-declarative programming paradigm
proposed in the area of non-monotonic reasoning and logic programming, that has
been recently employed in many applications. The development of efficient ASP
systems is, thus, crucial. Having in mind the task of improving the solving
methods for ASP, there are two usual ways to reach this goal: extending
state-of-the-art techniques and ASP solvers, or designing a new ASP
solver from scratch. An alternative to these trends is to build on top of
state-of-the-art solvers, and to apply machine learning techniques for choosing
automatically the "best" available solver on a per-instance basis.
In this paper we pursue this latter direction. We first define a set of
cheap-to-compute syntactic features that characterize several aspects of ASP
programs. Then, we apply classification methods that, given the features of the
instances in a {\sl training} set and the solvers' performance on these
instances, inductively learn algorithm selection strategies to be applied to a
{\sl test} set. We report the results of a number of experiments considering
solvers and different training and test sets of instances taken from the ones
submitted to the "System Track" of the 3rd ASP Competition. Our analysis shows
that, by applying machine learning techniques to ASP solving, it is possible to
obtain very robust performance: our approach can solve more instances compared
with any solver that entered the 3rd ASP Competition. (To appear in Theory and

A Process Modelling Framework Based on Point Interval Temporal Logic with an Application to Modelling Patient Flows
This thesis considers an application of a temporal theory to describe and model the patient journey in the hospital accident and emergency (A&E) department. The aim is to introduce a generic but dynamic method applied to any setting, including healthcare. Constructing a consistent process model can be instrumental in streamlining healthcare issues. Current process modelling techniques used in healthcare such as flowcharts, unified modelling language activity diagram (UML AD), and business process modelling notation (BPMN) are intuitive and imprecise. They cannot fully capture the complexities of the types of activities and the full extent of temporal constraints to an extent where one could reason about the flows. Formal approaches such as Petri have also been reviewed to investigate their applicability to the healthcare domain to model processes.
Additionally, to schedule patient flows, current modelling standards do not offer any formal mechanism, so healthcare relies on critical path method (CPM) and program evaluation review technique (PERT), that also have limitations, i.e. finish-start barrier. It is imperative to specify the temporal constraints between the start and/or end of a process, e.g., the beginning of a process A precedes the start (or end) of a process B. However, these approaches failed to provide us with a mechanism for handling these temporal situations. If provided, a formal representation can assist in effective knowledge representation and quality enhancement concerning a process. Also, it would help in uncovering complexities of a system and assist in modelling it in a consistent way which is not possible with the existing modelling techniques.
The above issues are addressed in this thesis by proposing a framework that would provide a knowledge base to model patient flows for accurate representation based on point interval temporal logic (PITL) that treats point and interval as primitives. These objects would constitute the knowledge base for the formal description of a system. With the aid of the inference mechanism of the temporal theory presented here, exhaustive temporal constraints derived from the proposed axiomatic system’ components serves as a knowledge base.
The proposed methodological framework would adopt a model-theoretic approach in which a theory is developed and considered as a model while the corresponding instance is considered as its application. Using this approach would assist in identifying core components of the system and their precise operation representing a real-life domain deemed suitable to the process modelling issues specified in this thesis. Thus, I have evaluated the modelling standards for their most-used terminologies and constructs to identify their key components. It will also assist in the generalisation of the critical terms (of process modelling standards) based on their ontology. A set of generalised terms proposed would serve as an enumeration of the theory and subsume the core modelling elements of the process modelling standards. The catalogue presents a knowledge base for the business and healthcare domains, and its components are formally defined (semantics). Furthermore, a resolution theorem-proof is used to show the structural features of the theory (model) to establish it is sound and complete.
After establishing that the theory is sound and complete, the next step is to provide the instantiation of the theory. This is achieved by mapping the core components of the theory to their corresponding instances. Additionally, a formal graphical tool termed as point graph (PG) is used to visualise the cases of the proposed axiomatic system. PG facilitates in modelling, and scheduling patient flows and enables analysing existing models for possible inaccuracies and inconsistencies supported by a reasoning mechanism based on PITL. Following that, a transformation is developed to map the core modelling components of the standards into the extended PG (PG*) based on the semantics presented by the axiomatic system.
A real-life case (from the King’s College hospital accident and emergency (A&E) department’s trauma patient pathway) is considered to validate the framework. It is divided into three patient flows to depict the journey of a patient with significant trauma, arriving at A&E, undergoing a procedure and subsequently discharged. Their staff relied upon the UML-AD and BPMN to model the patient flows. An evaluation of their representation is presented to show the shortfalls of the modelling standards to model patient flows. The last step is to model these patient flows using the developed approach, which is supported by enhanced reasoning and scheduling

Investigation into the effect of fixturing systems on the design of condition monitoring for machining operations
The global market competition has drawn the manufacturer’s attention on automated manufacturing processes using condition monitoring systems. These systems have been used for improving product quality, eliminating inspection, and enhancing manufacturing productivity. Fixtures are essential devices in machining processes to hold the tool or workpiece, hence they are influenced directly by the stability of the cutting tool. Therefore, tool and fixturing faults play an important part in the inaccuracy of the machining processes causing deterioration of surface roughness. For the above mentioned reasons, and the limited work in this domain, this thesis develops an experimental investigation to evaluate the effect of fixturing quality on the design of condition monitoring systems. The proposed monitoring system implements multisensors and signal processing methods able to analyse the sensory information and make an appropriate decision. Therefore, several sensors namely force, vibration, acoustic emission, eddy current, power, strain and sound, are combined with a newly suggested approach, named Taylor’s Equation Induced Pattern (TIP), and neural networks to detect tool wear and tool breakage. It also evaluates the monitoring system to provide valuable data to show the effect of fixturing quality. Surface roughness of the workpiece has been measured and compared with the sensitivity of the monitoring system, which reflects the state of tool and fixturing conditions
The EZSMT Solver: Constraint Answer Set Solving meets SMT
Constraint answer set programming is a promising research direction that integrates answer set programming with constraint processing. It is often informally related to the field of Satisfiability Modulo Theories. Yet, the exact formal link is obscured as the terminology and concepts used in these two research areas differ. In this thesis, by connecting these two areas, we begin the cross-fertilization of not only of the theoretical foundations of both areas but also of the existing solving technologies. We present the system EZSMT, one of the first solvers of this nature, which is able to take a large class of constraint answer set programs and rewrite them into Satisfiability Modulo Theories programs so that Satisfiability Modulo Theories technology can be used to process these programs
Blogs: On the Cutting Edge of the Next-generation Web
This article analyses a number of social and cultural aspects of the blog phenomenon with the methodological aid of a complexity model, the New Techno-social Environment (hereinafter also referred to by its Spanish acronym, NET, or Nuevo Entorno Tecnosocial) together with the socio-technical approach of the two blogologist authors. Both authors are researchers interested in the new reality of the Digital Universal Network (DUN). After a review of some basic definitions, the article moves on to highlight some key characteristics of an emerging blog culture and relates them to the properties of the NET. Then, after a brief practical parenthesis for people entering the blogosphere for the first time, we present some reflections on blogs as an evolution of virtual communities and on the changes experienced by the inhabitants of the infocity emerging from within the NET. The article concludes with a somewhat disturbing question; whether among these changes there might not be a gradual transformation of the structure and form of human intelligence
Automatic Algorithm Selection for Complex Simulation Problems
To select the most suitable simulation algorithm for a given task is often difficult. This is due to intricate interactions between model features, implementation details, and runtime environment, which may strongly affect the overall performance. The thesis consists of three parts. The first part surveys existing approaches to solve the algorithm selection problem and discusses techniques to analyze simulation algorithm performance.The second part introduces a software
framework for automatic simulation algorithm selection, which is evaluated in the third part.Die Auswahl des passendsten Simulationsalgorithmus für eine bestimmte Aufgabe ist oftmals schwierig. Parkinson\u27s Disease and Occupational Therapy: Evidence Based Practice
The therapeutic benefit of occupational therapy with Parkinson\u27s disease has not been studied in great detail. The purpose of this Scholarly Project was to provide extensive and comprehensive evidence-based information about Parkinson\u27s disease as it applies to occupational therapists. This information was utilized to generate clinical guidelines in the form of a user-friendly manual meant for practicing OTs in treating Parkinson\u27s disease.
An extensive literature review was performed using PubMed to determine current evidence-based practice that occupational therapists and other rehabilitation therapists were currently using. Following the review of literature, a needs assessment was completed per survey directed towards practicing OTs. The goal of the survey was to validate the need for these guidelines throughout the country.
The user-friendly manual is based on the Ecological Model of Human Performance using establish/restore, adapt/modify and prevent as intervention strategies. The product is titled Guidelines for Occupational Therapists in Treating Parkinson\u27s disease. It consists of four portions, the first focuses on a brief introduction to the disease, the next explains the general neuroscience behind the disease, the third portion gives a brief overview of medical interventions including pharmacological and surgical.
The fourth part of the product consists of the evidence-based guidelines for OTs to follow when treating persons with Parkinson\u27s disease. Occupational therapy offers many benefits to persons with Parkinson\u27s disease, including modification and/or adaptation of activities of daily living CADLs) with or without the use of adaptive equipment. Other intervention areas OTs may focus on are: therapeutic exercise routines, caregiver education, joint movement coordination, energy conservation and social skills · training. This user-friendly manual will provide occupational therapists with the necessary information to treat persons with Parkinson\u27s disease using evidence based guidelines

Are Language learning websites special? Towards a research agenda for discipline-specific usability
With the intention of defining an initial research agenda for discipline-specific factors in the usability of e-learning websites, this paper focuses on the example of foreign language learning. First, general notions and concepts of usability are analyzed, and the term 'pedagogical usability' is proposed as a means of focusing on the close relationship between usability and pedagogical design. Then, to address the key issue of whether there are aspects of pedagogical usability that are discipline-specific, the paper examines how language learning and teaching, in particular Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL), has approached usability when developing technology-enhanced learning materials. Three elements of a research agenda are identified: pedagogical usability, intercultural usability and website evaluation. In conclusion, it is suggested that just as language learning websites may require a discipline-specific approach, so in other disciplines pedagogical usability may also need to be considered in relation to the specific requirements of the discipline, and that a debate around these issues is timely
