    Collaborative cognitive content dissemination and query in heterogeneous mobile opportunistic networks

    This paper investigates complex challenges of opportunistic discovery of content stored in remote mobile devices and delivery to the requesting nodes in heterogeneous mobile disconnection prone environments. We propose new latency aware collaborative cognitive caching approach suitable for content dissemination and query in heterogeneous opportunistic mobile networks and dynamic workloads. Utilising fully localised and ego networks multi-layer predictive heuristics about dynamically changing topology, dynamic resources and varying popularity content, our cognitive caching achieves high success ratio, low delays and high caching efficiency for very different real world dynamically changing mobile topologies

    Increasing communication reliability in manufacturing environments

    This paper is concerned with low cost mechanisms that can increase reliability of machine to machine and machine to cloud communications in increasingly complex manufacturing environments that are prone to disconnections and faults. We propose a novel distributed and cooperative sensing framework that supports localized real time predictive analytics of connectivity patterns and detection of a range of faults together with issuing of notifications and responding on demand queries. We show that our Fault and Disconnection Aware Smart Sensing (FDASS) framework achieves significantly lower packet loss rates and communication delays in the face of unreliable nodes and networks when compared to the state of the art and benchmark approaches

    Low-cost mobile personal clouds

    We propose a mobile peer to peer personal cloud architecture which allows users to capture, store, analyse, interact with and share different types of personal and context data with no privacy leakage. Our mobile personal cloud can host multiple different services which are intelligent, distributed, dynamic and operate in real time. In this paper we describe one service that we designed and deployed on our mobile personal cloud called Mobile Wellbeing Companion Cloud (MWCC). Using low-cost, off-the-shelf hardware components and open-source software, our MWCC combines several sensor network technologies to allow users to monitor and interact with their personal data and environment in real time without privacy leakage. MWCC augments heterogeneous sensors data with state of the art machine learning algorithms for signal filtering, fast classification and analysis and provides interactive data visualisation for transparent user interaction. We show that our MWCC is easy to use and highly accurate while managing to keep resource costs low

    Smart Computing and Sensing Technologies for Animal Welfare: A Systematic Review

    Animals play a profoundly important and intricate role in our lives today. Dogs have been human companions for thousands of years, but they now work closely with us to assist the disabled, and in combat and search and rescue situations. Farm animals are a critical part of the global food supply chain, and there is increasing consumer interest in organically fed and humanely raised livestock, and how it impacts our health and environmental footprint. Wild animals are threatened with extinction by human induced factors, and shrinking and compromised habitat. This review sets the goal to systematically survey the existing literature in smart computing and sensing technologies for domestic, farm and wild animal welfare. We use the notion of \emph{animal welfare} in broad terms, to review the technologies for assessing whether animals are healthy, free of pain and suffering, and also positively stimulated in their environment. Also the notion of \emph{smart computing and sensing} is used in broad terms, to refer to computing and sensing systems that are not isolated but interconnected with communication networks, and capable of remote data collection, processing, exchange and analysis. We review smart technologies for domestic animals, indoor and outdoor animal farming, as well as animals in the wild and zoos. The findings of this review are expected to motivate future research and contribute to data, information and communication management as well as policy for animal welfare
