    Resource allocation technique for powerline network using a modified shuffled frog-leaping algorithm

    Resource allocation (RA) techniques should be made efficient and optimized in order to enhance the QoS (power & bit, capacity, scalability) of high-speed networking data applications. This research attempts to further increase the efficiency towards near-optimal performance. RA’s problem involves assignment of subcarriers, power and bit amounts for each user efficiently. Several studies conducted by the Federal Communication Commission have proven that conventional RA approaches are becoming insufficient for rapid demand in networking resulted in spectrum underutilization, low capacity and convergence, also low performance of bit error rate, delay of channel feedback, weak scalability as well as computational complexity make real-time solutions intractable. Mainly due to sophisticated, restrictive constraints, multi-objectives, unfairness, channel noise, also unrealistic when assume perfect channel state is available. The main goal of this work is to develop a conceptual framework and mathematical model for resource allocation using Shuffled Frog-Leap Algorithm (SFLA). Thus, a modified SFLA is introduced and integrated in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Then SFLA generated random population of solutions (power, bit), the fitness of each solution is calculated and improved for each subcarrier and user. The solution is numerically validated and verified by simulation-based powerline channel. The system performance was compared to similar research works in terms of the system’s capacity, scalability, allocated rate/power, and convergence. The resources allocated are constantly optimized and the capacity obtained is constantly higher as compared to Root-finding, Linear, and Hybrid evolutionary algorithms. The proposed algorithm managed to offer fastest convergence given that the number of iterations required to get to the 0.001% error of the global optimum is 75 compared to 92 in the conventional techniques.     Dynamic Resource Allocation in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Convex Optimization Perspective

    This article provides an overview of the state-of-art results on communication resource allocation over space, time, and frequency for emerging cognitive radio (CR) wireless networks. Focusing on the interference-power/interference-temperature (IT) constraint approach for CRs to protect primary radio transmissions, many new and challenging problems regarding the design of CR systems are formulated, and some of the corresponding solutions are shown to be obtainable by restructuring some classic results known for traditional (non-CR) wireless networks. It is demonstrated that convex optimization plays an essential role in solving these problems, in a both rigorous and efficient way.     Evaluation Of Multicarrier Air Interfaces In The Presence Of Interference For L-Band And C-Band Air-Ground Communications

    The use of aeronautical vehicles and systems is continuously growing, and this means current aeronautical communication systems, particularly those operating in the very high frequency (VHF) aviation band, will suffer from severe congestion in some regions of the world. For example, it is estimated that air-to-ground (AG) communication traffic density will at least double by 2035 over that in 2012, based on the most-likely growth scenario for Europe. This traffic growth (worldwide) has led civil aviation authorities such as the FAA in the USA, and EuroControl in Europe, to jointly explore development of future communication infrastructures (FCI). According to international aviation systems policies, both current and future AG communication systems will be deployed in L-band (960-1164 MHz), and possibly in C-band (5030-5091 GHz) because of the favorable AG radio propagation characteristics in these bands. During the same time period as the FCI studies, the use of multicarrier communication technologies has become very mature for terrestrial communication systems, but for AG systems it is still being studied and tested. Aiming toward future demands, EuroControl and FAA sponsored work to define several new candidate AG radio systems with high data rate and high reliability. Dominant among these is now an L-Band Digital Aeronautical Communication Systems (L-DACS): L-DACS1. L-DACS1 is a multicarrier communication system based on the popular orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation technique. For airport surface area communication systems used in C-band, EuroControl and FAA also proposed another OFDM communication system based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, termed aeronautical mobile airport communication system (AeroMACS). This system has been proposed to provide the growing need of communication traffic in airport environments. In this dissertation, first we review existing and proposed aviation communication systems in VHF-band, L-band and C-band. We then focus our study on the use of multicarrier techniques in these aviation bands. We compare the popular and dominant multicarrier technique OFDM (which is used in cellular networks such long-term evolution (LTE) and wireless local area networks such as Wi-Fi) with the filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) technique. As far as we are aware, we are the first to propose and evaluate FBMC for aviation communication systems. We show, using analysis and computer simulations, along with measurement based (NASA) air-ground and airport surface channel models, that FBMC offers advantages in performance over the OFDM schemes. Via use of sharp filters in the frequency domain, FBMC reduces out of band interference. Specifically, it is more robust to high-power distance measurement equipment (DME) interference, and via replacement of guard bands with data-bearing subcarriers, FBMC can offer higher throughput than the contending L-DACS1 scheme, by up to 23%. Similar advantages over AeroMACS pertain in the airport surface channel. Our FBMC bit error ratio performance is comparable to that of the OFDM schemes, and is even better for our “spectrally-shaped” version of FBMC. For these improvements, FBMC requires a modest complexity increase. Our final contribution in this dissertation is the presentation of spectrally shaped FBMC (SS-FBMC). This idea allocates unequal power to subcarriers to contend with non-white noise or non-white interference. Our adaptive algorithm selects a minimum number of guard subcarriers and then allocates power accordingly to remaining subcarriers based on a “water-filling-like” approach. We are the first to propose such a cognitive radio technique with FBMC for aviation applications. Results show that SSFBMC improves over FBMC in both performance and throughput

    Distributed resource allocation for inter cell interference mitigation in irregular geometry multicell networks

    Extensive increase in mobile broadband applications and proliferation of smart phones and gadgets require higher data rates of wireless cellular networks. However, limited frequency spectrum has led to aggressive frequency reuse to improve network capacity at the expense of increased Inter Cell Interference (ICI). Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) has been acknowledged as an effective ICI mitigation scheme but in irregular geometric multicellular network, ICI mitigation poses a very challenging issue. The thesis developed a decentralized ICI mitigation scheme to improve both spectral and energy efficiency in irregular geometric multicellular networks. ICI mitigation was realized through Distributed Resource Allocation (DRA) deployed at the cell level and region level of an irregular geometric cell. The irregular geometric cell consists of a minimum of four regions comprising three sectors and a central region. DRA at the cell level is defined as Multi Sector DRA (MSDRA), and at the region level is defined as Distributed Channel Selection and Power Allocation (DCSPA). MSDRA allocates discrete power to every region in a cell based on Game Theory and Regret Learning Process with correlated equilibrium as the optimum decision level. The DCSPA allocates power to every channel in a region based on non-coalesce liquid droplet phenomena by selecting optimum channels in a region and reserving appropriate power for the selected channels. The performance was evaluated through simulation in terms of data rate, spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. The results showed that MSDRA significantly improved cell data rate by 58.64% and 37.92% in comparision to Generalized FFR and Fractional Frequency Reuse-3 (FFR-3) schemes, respectively. The performance of MSDRA at the cell level showed that its spectral and energy efficiency improved 32% and 22%, respectively in comparison to FFR-3. When the number of sectors increased from three to four, data rate was improved by 30.26% and for three to six sectors, it was improved by 56.32%. The DCSPA further improved data rate by 41.07% when compared with Geometric Water Filling, and 86.46% in comparison to Asynchronous Iterative Water Filling. The DCSPA enhanced data rate achieved in MSDRA by 15.6%. Overall, DRA has shown to have significant improvement in data rate by 53.6%, and spectral efficiency by 38.10% as compared to FFR-3. As a conclusion, the DRA scheme is a potential candidate for Long Term Evaluation – Advanced, Fifth Generation networks and can be deployed in future heterogeneous irregular geometric multicellular Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access networks
