Maritime coverage enhancement using UAVs coordinated with hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks
Due to the agile maneuverability, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have shown great promise for on-demand communications. In practice, UAV-aided aerial base stations are not separate. Instead, they rely on existing satellites/terrestrial systems for spectrum sharing and efficient backhaul. In this case, how to coordinate satellites, UAVs and terrestrial systems is still an open issue. In this paper, we deploy UAVs for coverage enhancement of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial maritime communication network. Using a typical composite channel model including both large-scale and small-scale fading, the UAV trajectory and in-flight transmit power are jointly optimized, subject to constraints on UAV kinematics, tolerable interference, backhaul, and the total energy of the UAV for communications. Different from existing studies, only the location-dependent large-scale channel state information (CSI) is assumed available, because it is difficult to obtain the small-scale CSI before takeoff in practice and the ship positions can be obtained via the dedicated maritime Automatic Identification System. The optimization problem is non-convex. We solve it by using problem decomposition, successive convex optimization and bisection searching tools. Simulation results demonstrate that the UAV fits well with existing satellite and terrestrial systems, using the proposed optimization framework
Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges
With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing
number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed
and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected.
Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime
satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency
and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base
stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks
using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services.
Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs.
Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient
maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated
electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS
sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications,
conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be
tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the
demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key
technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage,
and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an
environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to
be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and
atmosphere conditions, are also discussed
Database-assisted spectrum sharing in satellite communications:A survey
This survey paper discusses the feasibility of sharing the spectrum between satellite telecommunication networks and terrestrial and other satellite networks on the basis of a comprehensive study carried out as part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme. The main area of investigation is the use of spectrum databases to enable a controlled sharing environment. Future satellite systems can largely benefit from the ability to access spectrum bands other than the dedicated licensed spectrum band. Potential spectrum sharing scenarios are classified as: a) secondary use of the satellite spectrum by terrestrial systems, b) satellite system as a secondary user of spectrum, c) extension of a terrestrial network by using the satellite network, and d) two satellite systems sharing the same spectrum. We define practical use cases for each scenario and identify suitable techniques. The proposed scenarios and use cases cover several frequency bands and satellite orbits. Out of all the scenarios reviewed, owing to the announcement of many different mega-constellation satellite networks, we focus on analysing the feasibility of spectrum sharing between geostationary orbit (GSO) and non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite systems. The performance is primarily analysed on the basis of widely accepted recommendations of the Radiocommunications Sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-R). Self-Evolving Integrated Vertical Heterogeneous Networks
6G and beyond networks tend towards fully intelligent and adaptive design in
order to provide better operational agility in maintaining universal wireless
access and supporting a wide range of services and use cases while dealing with
network complexity efficiently. Such enhanced network agility will require
developing a self-evolving capability in designing both the network
architecture and resource management to intelligently utilize resources, reduce
operational costs, and achieve the coveted quality of service (QoS). To enable
this capability, the necessity of considering an integrated vertical
heterogeneous network (VHetNet) architecture appears to be inevitable due to
its high inherent agility. Moreover, employing an intelligent framework is
another crucial requirement for self-evolving networks to deal with real-time
network optimization problems. Hence, in this work, to provide a better insight
on network architecture design in support of self-evolving networks, we
highlight the merits of integrated VHetNet architecture while proposing an
intelligent framework for self-evolving integrated vertical heterogeneous
networks (SEI-VHetNets). The impact of the challenges associated with
SEI-VHetNet architecture, on network management is also studied considering a
generalized network model. Furthermore, the current literature on network
management of integrated VHetNets along with the recent advancements in
artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) solutions are discussed.
Accordingly, the core challenges of integrating AI/ML in SEI-VHetNets are
identified. Finally, the potential future research directions for advancing the

transformative potential of 3D wireless networks, an innovative amalgamation of
terrestrial, aerial, and satellite technologies, in enhancing disaster response
mechanisms. We delve into a myriad of use cases, ranging from large facility
evacuations to wildfire management, underscoring the versatility of these
networks in ensuring timely communication, real-time situational awareness, and
efficient resource allocation during crises. We also present an overview of
cutting-edge prototypes, highlighting the practical feasibility and operational
efficacy of 3D wireless networks in real-world scenarios. Simultaneously, we
acknowledge the challenges posed by aspects such as cybersecurity, cross-border
coordination, and physical layer technological hurdles, and propose future
directions for research and development in this domain
A Vision and Framework for the High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) Networks of the Future
A High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a network node that operates in
the stratosphere at an of altitude around 20 km and is instrumental for
providing communication services. Precipitated by technological innovations in
the areas of autonomous avionics, array antennas, solar panel efficiency
levels, and battery energy densities, and fueled by flourishing industry
ecosystems, the HAPS has emerged as an indispensable component of
next-generations of wireless networks. In this article, we provide a vision and
framework for the HAPS networks of the future supported by a comprehensive and
state-of-the-art literature review. We highlight the unrealized potential of
HAPS systems and elaborate on their unique ability to serve metropolitan areas.
The latest advancements and promising technologies in the HAPS energy and
payload systems are discussed. The integration of the emerging Reconfigurable
Smart Surface (RSS) technology in the communications payload of HAPS systems
for providing a cost-effective deployment is proposed. A detailed overview of
the radio resource management in HAPS systems is presented along with
synergistic physical layer techniques, including Faster-Than-Nyquist (FTN)
signaling. Numerous aspects of handoff management in HAPS systems are
described. The notable contributions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in HAPS,
including machine learning in the design, topology management, handoff, and
resource allocation aspects are emphasized. The extensive overview of the
literature we provide is crucial for substantiating our vision that depicts the
expected deployment opportunities and challenges in the next 10 years
(next-generation networks), as well as in the subsequent 10 years

Communication and Control in Collaborative UAVs: Recent Advances and Future Trends
The recent progress in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) technology has
significantly advanced UAV-based applications for military, civil, and
commercial domains. Nevertheless, the challenges of establishing high-speed
communication links, flexible control strategies, and developing efficient
collaborative decision-making algorithms for a swarm of UAVs limit their
autonomy, robustness, and reliability. Thus, a growing focus has been witnessed
on collaborative communication to allow a swarm of UAVs to coordinate and
communicate autonomously for the cooperative completion of tasks in a short
time with improved efficiency and reliability. This work presents a
comprehensive review of collaborative communication in a multi-UAV system. We
thoroughly discuss the characteristics of intelligent UAVs and their
communication and control requirements for autonomous collaboration and
coordination. Moreover, we review various UAV collaboration tasks, summarize
the applications of UAV swarm networks for dense urban environments and present
the use case scenarios to highlight the current developments of UAV-based
applications in various domains. Finally, we identify several exciting future
research direction that needs attention for advancing the research in
collaborative UAVs
6G Non-Terrestrial Networks Enabled Low-Altitude Economy: Opportunities and Challenges
The unprecedented development of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) utilizes the
low-altitude airspace for commercial and social flying activities. The
integration of NTN and terres- trial networks leads to the emergence of
low-altitude economy (LAE). A series of LAE application scenarios are enabled
by the sensing, communication, and transportation functionalities of the
aircrafts. The prerequisite technologies supporting LAE are introduced in this
paper, including the network coverage and aircrafts detection. The LAE
functionalities assisted by aircrafts with respect to sensing and communication
are then summarized, including the terrestrial and non-terrestrial targets
sensing, ubiquitous coverage, relaying, and traffic offloading. Finally,
several future directions are identified, including aircrafts collaboration,
