Digital 3D reconstruction as a research environment in art and architecture history: uncertainty classification and visualisation
The dissertation addresses the still not solved challenges concerned with the source-based digital 3D reconstruction, visualisation and documentation in the domain of archaeology, art and architecture history.
The emerging BIM methodology and the exchange data format IFC are changing the way of collaboration, visualisation and documentation in the planning, construction and facility management process. The introduction and development of the Semantic Web (Web 3.0), spreading the idea of structured, formalised and linked data, offers semantically enriched human- and machine-readable data.
In contrast to civil engineering and cultural heritage, academic object-oriented disciplines, like archaeology, art and architecture history, are acting as outside spectators.
Since the 1990s, it has been argued that a 3D model is not likely to be considered a scientific reconstruction unless it is grounded on accurate documentation and visualisation. However, these standards are still missing and the validation of the outcomes is not fulfilled. Meanwhile, the digital research data remain ephemeral and continue to fill the growing digital cemeteries.
This study focuses, therefore, on the evaluation of the source-based digital 3D reconstructions and, especially, on uncertainty assessment in the case of hypothetical reconstructions of destroyed or never built artefacts according to scientific principles, making the models shareable and reusable by a potentially wide audience.
The work initially focuses on terminology and on the definition of a workflow especially related to the classification and visualisation of uncertainty. The workflow is then applied to specific cases of 3D models uploaded to the DFG repository of the AI Mainz. In this way, the available methods of documenting, visualising and communicating uncertainty are analysed.
In the end, this process will lead to a validation or a correction of the workflow and the initial assumptions, but also (dealing with different hypotheses) to a better definition of the levels of uncertainty
Mission-Critical Communications from LMR to 5G: a Technology Assessment approach for Smart City scenarios
Radiocommunication networks are one of the main support tools of agencies that carry out
actions in Public Protection & Disaster Relief (PPDR), and it is necessary to update these
communications technologies from narrowband to broadband and integrated to information
technologies to have an effective action before society. Understanding that this problem
includes, besides the technical aspects, issues related to the social context to which these
systems are inserted, this study aims to construct scenarios, using several sources of

Method and device for live-streaming with opportunistic mobile edge cloud offloading
A novel, pervasive approach to disseminating live streaming content combines secure distributed systems, WiFi multicast, erasure coding, source coding and opportunistic offloading using hyperlocal mobile edge clouds. The solution disclosed to the technical problem of disseminating live streaming content without requiring a substantial equipment, planning and deployment of appropriate network infrastructure points offers an 11 fold reduction on the infrastructural WiFi bandwidth usage without having to modify any existing software or firmware stacks while ensuring stream integrity, authorization and authentication

Contextually and identity aware 5G services
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThe fifth generation (5G) mobile networks aim to be ten times faster than the existing 4G connection, whilst providing low latency, and flexibility. Hence, various alterations are planned to the existing network infrastructure to be able to reach the 5G expected performance levels. The main technologies that were used, to ensure high performance, flexible network, and efficient resource allocation, are Software Defined Network and Network Function Virtualization. As these technologies are replacing the device-based architecture with, a service-based architecture.
This thesis provides a design of location database interactive web interface and interactive mobile application. The implementation of real time video streaming location server, the streaming system's performance parameters demonstrated a high level of QoS (0.07ms jitter and 9.53ms delay). In regard to experimental examination, it measured the localisation coverage, accuracy measurements and a highly scalable security solution. The localisation coverage and accuracy measurements were achieved through the mmWave and VLC link transmitters. The proposed simulated annealing algorithm aimed at data optimisation for location measurements accuracy showed results of the average location error of x and y which showed significant improvement from x= 22.5 and y=21.6 to x=11.09 and y= 11.63.
The proposed indoor location security solution showed significant results, as it provides a high scalability solution using the VNF. The solution showed that it was not 100% effective, as some of the fake discover packets still reached the DHCP server. This was due to the high load of traffic passing through the network. Nonetheless, 90% of the fake DHCP discover packets never reached the DHCP server because the scripts began blocking all fake discover packets after realising it was an attack. This conveys that the proposed system was able to run successfully without crashing or overloading the controller.
Overall, the main challenges facing 5G have been addressed with their proposed solutions, which showed promising results. Detection and Evaluation of Clusters within Sequential Data
Motivated by theoretical advancements in dimensionality reduction techniques
we use a recent model, called Block Markov Chains, to conduct a practical study
of clustering in real-world sequential data. Clustering algorithms for Block
Markov Chains possess theoretical optimality guarantees and can be deployed in
sparse data regimes. Despite these favorable theoretical properties, a thorough
evaluation of these algorithms in realistic settings has been lacking.
We address this issue and investigate the suitability of these clustering
algorithms in exploratory data analysis of real-world sequential data. In
particular, our sequential data is derived from human DNA, written text, animal
movement data and financial markets. In order to evaluate the determined
clusters, and the associated Block Markov Chain model, we further develop a set
of evaluation tools. These tools include benchmarking, spectral noise analysis
and statistical model selection tools. An efficient implementation of the
clustering algorithm and the new evaluation tools is made available together
with this paper.
Practical challenges associated to real-world data are encountered and
discussed. It is ultimately found that the Block Markov Chain model assumption,
together with the tools developed here, can indeed produce meaningful insights
in exploratory data analyses despite the complexity and sparsity of real-world
