Nucleus: A Pilot Project
Early in 2016, an environmental scan was conducted by the Research Library
Data Working Group for three purposes:
1.) Perform a survey of the data management landscape at Los Alamos National
Laboratory in order to identify local gaps in data management services.
2.) Conduct an environmental scan of external institutions to benchmark
budgets, infrastructure, and personnel dedicated to data management.
3.) Draft a research data infrastructure model that aligns with the current
workflow and classification restrictions at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
This report is a summary of those activities and the draft for a pilot data

Controlled Environment Agriculture: A Pilot Project
The controlled-environment agricultural (CEA)
project discussed in this report was first conceived for
the Wildwood Air Force Station in Kenai, Alaska, in
1972. The region contained high unemployment and a
U.S. Air Force Station that had just closed. The Kenai
Native Association, Inc. (KNA), was to take possession
of the Air Force Station through land transfers associated
with the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act,
and this corporation was interested in expanding
business and employment opportunities for local
people. The University of Alaska Agricultural Experiment
Station (AES) contacted KNA to determine if it
had a facility which might be adaptable for use in a
research and development program in controlled-

environment agriculture. It was determined that such
a facility was available. Subsequently, AES and KNA
contacted the General Electric Company (GE) in
Syracuse, New York, to determine its interest in such a
project. GE had extensive background in lighting technology
and environmental control systems and the
engineering capability to develop a total system for
CEA production. It was agreed that GE would provide
technological expertise and AES would provide horticultural
and economic expertise for the growing and
marketing of a variety of salad crops. KNA would
manage the project, employ the nontechnical people,
and provide the building.
The Wildwood site was selected because it contained
two buildings which were thought to be well
suited for CEA production. One building would provide
sufficient inside space for a 1/4-acre pilot production
plant, nine small research modules , a laboratory ,
offices, a training area, and space for preparing the
crop for shipping. A second building near the first
contained three diesel generators which were to be
converted to natural gas to provide power for the
production facility.The Controlled Environment Agriculture Project
at Wildwood Village, Kenai, Alaska, spanned a period
of five years. During that time, three agencies: Kenai
Native Association, Inc.; General Electric Company;
and University of Alaska Agricultural Experiment Station
, were responsible for the management, research,
and production activities. Many persons from these
agencies who participated in all phases of the project
are acknowledged for their participation and support.
This report summarizes work began in 1972 and
concluded in 1977 on controlled-environment agriculture
in facilities located at Wildwood Village, Kenai,
Alaska, managed by the Kenai Native Association , Inc.

Use of Interdisciplinary Education to Foster Familiarization among Health Professionals
This paper describes a pilot interdisciplinary experience between the dental hygiene and medical technology programs at Marquette University. It was designed, in part, to familiarize dental hygiene students with the medical technology profession. Comments solicited from students on the final evaluation form indicated that this pilot project was highly successful and met the objectives. Affective, multiple-choice questions on pretests and posttests showed a positive change in attitude, but this change was not statistically significant. Possible reasons for this are discussed. Benefits of this pilot project were an improved understanding of medical technology on the part of the dental hygiene students, enhanced interdepartmental communication, and plans to develop a reciprocal interdisciplinary experience for the medical technology students. It is hoped that this pilot project will serve as a stimulus for similar experiences among other health science programs
Global Temperature and Salinity Pilot Project
Data exchange and data management programs have been evolving over many years. Within the international community there are two main programs to support the exchange, management and processing of real time and delayed mode data. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) operate the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) program which coordinates the exchange of delayed mode data between national oceanographic data centers, World Data Centers and the user community. The Integrated Global Ocean Services System is a joint IOC/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) program for the exchange and management of real-time data. These two programs are complemented by mechanisms that have been established within scientific programs to exchange and manage project data sets. In particular TOGA and WOCE have identified a data management requirement and established the appropriate infrastructure to achieve this. Where GTSPP fits into this existing framework is discussed

Facilitating independence: The benefits of a post-diagnostic support project for people with dementia.
Providing support in the form of information, advice and access to services or social events is promoted as beneficial for people newly diagnosed with dementia and their families. This paper reports on key findings from an evaluation of a post-diagnostic support pilot project in Scotland addressing local service gaps, namely information provision, emotional and practical support and maintaining community links. Twenty-seven participants (14 people newly diagnosed with dementia and 13 family carers) were interviewed at two time points: T1 shortly after joining the pilot project and T2 approximately six months later, to ascertain their views on existing services and the support offered by the pilot project. A comparative thematic analysis revealed that the project facilitated increased independence (associated with increased motivation and self-confidence) of people with dementia. The project illustrates what can be achieved if resources are targeted at providing individualised post-diagnostic support, particularly where there are service delivery gaps
Interdisciplinary Education In Dental Hygiene: A Pilot Project
This study describes a five-hour interdisciplinary experience involving sophomore dental hygiene students, dental hygiene faculty and medical technology faculty. This experience met the objectives of interdisciplinary teaching while reinforcing and expanding on a present topic in a four-year dental hygiene curriculum.
The results of this experience are documented by pre- and post-testing and student evaluations. Statistical analysis of the test results along with student commentaries support interdisciplinary education as a viable and positive teaching approach. Student ability to correctly answer topic-related cognitive questions increased significantly while their understanding of the medical technology profession and its relationship to dental hygiene also developed.
The experience was included within the framework of the pre-clinical dental hygiene course which kept the implementation efficient and perhaps contributed to its success. This pilot project was a positive step toward cĪøntinued interdisciplinary experiences between the dental hygiene and medical technology programs and created enthusiasm for expanding the experiences in the future to include the other health programs
