Applying Machine Translation to Two-Stage Cross-Language Information Retrieval
Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), where queries and documents are
in different languages, needs a translation of queries and/or documents, so as
to standardize both of them into a common representation. For this purpose, the
use of machine translation is an effective approach. However, computational
cost is prohibitive in translating large-scale document collections. To resolve
this problem, we propose a two-stage CLIR method. First, we translate a given
query into the document language, and retrieve a limited number of foreign
documents. Second, we machine translate only those documents into the user
language, and re-rank them based on the translation result. We also show the
effectiveness of our method by way of experiments using Japanese queries and

We investigated dictionary based cross language information
retrieval using lexical triangulation. Lexical triangulation combines the results
of different transitive translations. Transitive translation uses a pivot language
to translate between two languages when no direct translation resource is
available. We took German queries and translated then via Spanish, or Dutch
into English. We compared the results of retrieval experiments using these
queries, with other versions created by combining the transitive translations or
created by direct translation. Direct dictionary translation of a query introduces
considerable ambiguity that damages retrieval, an average precision 79% below
monolingual in this research. Transitive translation introduces more ambiguity,
giving results worse than 88% below direct translation. We have shown that
lexical triangulation between two transitive translations can eliminate much of
the additional ambiguity introduced by transitive translation
CRL at Ntcir2
We have developed systems of two types for NTCIR2. One is an enhenced version
of the system we developed for NTCIR1 and IREX. It submitted retrieval results
for JJ and CC tasks. A variety of parameters were tried with the system. It
used such characteristics of newspapers as locational information in the CC
tasks. The system got good results for both of the tasks. The other system is a
portable system which avoids free parameters as much as possible. The system
submitted retrieval results for JJ, JE, EE, EJ, and CC tasks. The system
automatically determined the number of top documents and the weight of the
original query used in automatic-feedback retrieval. It also determined
relevant terms quite robustly. For EJ and JE tasks, it used document expansion
to augment the initial queries. It achieved good results, except on the CC

Domain-speciïŹc query translation for multilingual access to digital libraries
Accurate high-coverage translation is a vital component of reliable cross language information access (CLIR) systems. This is particularly true of access to archives such as Digital Libraries which are often speciïŹc to certain domains. While general machine translation (MT) has been shown to be effective for CLIR tasks in information retrieval evaluation workshops, it is not well suited to specialized tasks where domain speciïŹc translations are required. We demonstrate that effective query translation
in the domain of cultural heritage (CH) can be achieved by augmenting a standard MT system with domain-speciïŹc phrase dictionaries automatically mined from the online Wikipedia. Experiments using our hybrid translation system with sample query logs from users of CH websites demonstrate a large improvement in the accuracy of domain speciïŹc phrase detection and translation
Introduction to the special issue on cross-language algorithms and applications
With the increasingly global nature of our everyday interactions, the need for multilingual technologies to support efficient and efective information access and communication cannot be overemphasized. Computational modeling of language has been the focus of
Natural Language Processing, a subdiscipline of Artificial Intelligence. One of the current challenges for this discipline is to design methodologies and algorithms that are cross-language in order to create multilingual technologies rapidly. The goal of this JAIR special
issue on Cross-Language Algorithms and Applications (CLAA) is to present leading research in this area, with emphasis on developing unifying themes that could lead to the development of the science of multi- and cross-lingualism. In this introduction, we provide the reader with the motivation for this special issue and summarize the contributions of the papers that have been included. The selected papers cover a broad range of cross-lingual technologies including machine translation, domain and language adaptation for sentiment
analysis, cross-language lexical resources, dependency parsing, information retrieval and knowledge representation. We anticipate that this special issue will serve as an invaluable resource for researchers interested in topics of cross-lingual natural language processing.Postprint (published version
Applying digital content management to support localisation
The retrieval and presentation of digital content such as that on the World Wide Web (WWW) is a substantial area of research. While recent years have seen huge expansion in the size of web-based archives that can be searched efficiently by commercial search engines, the presentation of potentially relevant content is still limited to ranked document lists represented by simple text snippets or image keyframe surrogates. There is expanding interest in techniques to personalise the presentation of content to improve the richness and effectiveness of the user experience. One of the most significant challenges to achieving this is the increasingly multilingual nature of this data, and the need to provide suitably localised responses to users based on this content. The Digital Content Management (DCM) track of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) is seeking to develop technologies to support advanced personalised access and presentation of information by combining elements from the existing research areas of Adaptive Hypermedia and Information Retrieval. The combination of these technologies is intended to produce significant improvements in the way users access information. We review key features of these technologies and introduce early ideas for how these technologies can support localisation and localised content before concluding with some impressions of future directions in DCM
Which user interaction for cross-language information retrieval? Design issues and reflections
A novel and complex form of information access is cross-language information retrieval: searching for texts written in foreign languages based on native language queries. Although the underlying technology for achieving such a search is relatively well understood, the appropriate interface design is not. The authors present three user evaluations undertaken during the iterative design of Clarity, a cross-language retrieval system for low-density languages, and shows how the user-interaction design evolved depending on the results of usability tests. The first test was instrumental to identify weaknesses in both functionalities and interface; the second was run to determine if query translation should be shown or not; the final was a global assessment and focused on user satisfaction criteria. Lessons were learned at every stage of the process leading to a much more informed view of what a cross-language retrieval system should offer to users
Japanese/English Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Exploration of Query Translation and Transliteration
Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), where queries and documents are
in different languages, has of late become one of the major topics within the
information retrieval community. This paper proposes a Japanese/English CLIR
system, where we combine a query translation and retrieval modules. We
currently target the retrieval of technical documents, and therefore the
performance of our system is highly dependent on the quality of the translation
of technical terms. However, the technical term translation is still
problematic in that technical terms are often compound words, and thus new
terms are progressively created by combining existing base words. In addition,
Japanese often represents loanwords based on its special phonogram.
Consequently, existing dictionaries find it difficult to achieve sufficient
coverage. To counter the first problem, we produce a Japanese/English
dictionary for base words, and translate compound words on a word-by-word
basis. We also use a probabilistic method to resolve translation ambiguity. For
the second problem, we use a transliteration method, which corresponds words
unlisted in the base word dictionary to their phonetic equivalents in the
target language. We evaluate our system using a test collection for CLIR, and
show that both the compound word translation and transliteration methods
improve the system performance
Survey on Variants of Cross Language Information Retrieval
To provide the user with relevant information, is the utmost goal of information retrieval.As the information on web is available in many languages, retrieval need not be restricted to single language. We can place the query in any language and also can search for information in documents represented in any language. In this paper different flavors of retrieval with respect to language like monolingual,bilingual,cross lingual and multilingual are summarized.
