    Performance of cognitive stop-and-wait hybrid automatic repeat request in the face of imperfect sensing

    The cognitive radio (CR) paradigm has the potential of improving the exploitation of the electromagnetic spectrum by detecting instantaneously unoccupied spectrum slots allocated to primary users (PUs). In order to support the process of spectrum reuse, we consider a CR scheme, which senses and opportunistically accesses a PU's spectrum for communication between a pair of nodes relying on the stop-and-wait hybrid automatic repeat request (SW-HARQ) protocol. This arrangement is represented by the cognitive SW-HARQ (CSW-HARQ), where the availability/unavailability of the PU's channel is modeled as a two-state Markov chain having OFF and ON states, respectively. Once the cognitive user (CU) finds that the PU's channel is available (i.e., in the OFF state), the CU transmits data over the PU channel's spectrum, while relying on the principles of SW-HARQ. We investigate both the throughput and the delay of CSW-HARQ, with a special emphasis on the impact of the various system parameters involved in the scenarios of both perfect and imperfect spectrum sensing. Furthermore, we analyze both the throughput as well as the average packet delay and end-to-end packet delay of the CSW-HARQ system. We propose a pair of analytical approaches: 1) the probability-based and 2) the discrete time Markov chain-based. Closed-form expressions are derived for both the throughput and the delay under the perfect and imperfect sensing environments that are validated by simulation. We demonstrate that the activity of PUs, the transmission reliability of the CU, and the sensing environment have a significant impact on both the throughput and the delay of the CR system

    Stochastic Geometry Analysis of a Class of Cooperative Relaying Protocols

    This thesis examines wireless relay networks that use hybrid-ARQ protocols. Relays networks efficiently combat fading and exploit the spatial diversity present in the channel. Hybrid-ARQ involves retransmitting the signal if it is not decoded correctly. In conventional HARQ, the retransmission comes from the source, but in cooperative HARQ the retransmission could come from a relay that has successfully decoded the message, thus attaining transmit diversity.;A Markov chain model is conceived and used to compute the effective throughput and outage probability in the presence of Rayleigh fading. The analytical results are validated with simulations. The spatial configuration of the network plays an important role in the performance of the network. The behavior of the protocols for fixed network topologies and random topologies is examined. The impact of parameters such as path loss exponent, number of relays, and Signal to Noise Ratio are determined.;Spatial averaging is helpful in capturing the spatial variations present in the system. When network topology is random, the analysis proceeds by first assuming the number of relays is fixed, in which case they are drawn from a Binomial Point Process (BPP). For each network realization, the outage probability, throughput and effective throughput are found, and the spatial average of these quantities are found by averaging over a large number of network realizations. Moreover, the maximum throughput is found for each network realization, leading to a characterization of the distribution of throughputs achievable in a random network. Finally, networks with a random number of relays are considered, including the important case that the number of relays in a given area is Poisson distributed, in which case they are drawn from a Poisson Point Process (PPP)

    Cross-layer hybrid automatic repeat request error control with turbo processing for wireless system

    The increasing demand for wireless communication system requires an efficient design in wireless communication system. One of the main challenges is to design error control mechanism in noisy wireless channel. Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) are two main error control mechanisms. Hybrid ARQ allows the use of either FEC or ARQ when required. The issues with existing Hybrid ARQ are reliability, complexity and inefficient design. Therefore, the design of Hybrid ARQ needs to be further improved in order to achieve performance close to the Shannon capacity. The objective of this research is to develop a Cross-Layer Design Hybrid ARQ defined as CLD_ARQ to further minimize error in wireless communication system. CLD_ARQ comprises of three main stages. First, a low complexity FEC defined as IRC_FEC for error detection and correction has been developed by using Irregular Repetition Code (IRC) with Turbo processing. The second stage is the enhancement of IRC_FEC defined as EM_IRC_FEC to improve the reliability of error detection by adopting extended mapping. The last stage is the development of efficient CLD_ARQ to include retransmission for error correction that exploits EM_IRC_FEC and ARQ. In the proposed design, serial iterative decoding and parallel iterative decoding are deployed in the error detection and correction. The performance of the CLD_ARQ is evaluated in the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel using EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart, bit error rate (BER) and throughput analysis. The results show significant Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gain from the theoretical limit at BER of 10-5. IRC_FEC outperforms Recursive Systematic Convolutional Code (RSCC) by SNR gain up to 7% due to the use of IRC as a simple channel coding code. The usage of CLD_ARQ enhances the SNR gain by 53% compared to without ARQ due to feedback for retransmission. The adoption of extended mapping in the CLD_ARQ improves the SNR gain up to 50% due to error detection enhancement. In general, the proposed CLD_ARQ can achieve low BER and close to the Shannon‘s capacity even in worse channel condition

    Optimisation of relay placement in wireless butterfly networks

    As a typical model of multicast network, wireless butterfly networks (WBNs) have been studied for modelling the scenario when two source nodes wish to convey data to two destination nodes via an intermediary node namely relay node. In the context of wireless communications, when receiving two data packets from the two source nodes, the relay node can employ either physical-layer network coding or analogue network coding on the combined packet prior to forwarding to the two destination nodes. Evaluating the energy efficiency of these combination approaches, energy-delay trade-off (EDT) is worth to be investigated and the relay placement should be taken into account in the practical network design. This chapter will first investigate the EDT of network coding in the WBNs. Based on the derived EDT, algorithms that optimize the relay position will be developed to either minimize the transmission delay or minimize the energy consumption subject to constraints on power allocation and location of nodes. Furthermore, considering an extended model of the WBN, the relay placement will be studied for a general wireless multicast network with multiple source, relay and destination nodes

    A Secure, Configurable, Wireless System for Transfer of Sensor Data from Aircraft to Ground

    Modern aircraft are complex systems, equipped with hundreds of embedded sensors that record a wide repertoire of data during flight, such as crucial engine and airframe parameters, status of flight control system, air conditioning system, landing gear, life-saving and emergency systems. The data from the sensors is stored in the Flight Data Recorder. Maintenance personnel routinely transfer this sensor data to a ground terminal device to analyze it for aircraft health and performance monitoring purposes. Manual methods of extracting sensor data can be tedious and error-prone when large fleets of aircraft are involved. This paper presents a novel system to extract sensor data from aircraft to a ground terminal, wirelessly. The wireless system is implemented using unique, configurable wireless transmitter receivers (WTRs) designed for this purpose. The hardware for the wireless transfer of data was designed, interfaced with a modern aircraft’s system, and tested with the aircraft on the ground and another flying object. The data from the aircraft’s Flight Data Recorder was successfully transmitted and received wirelessly by the ground terminal, over a distance of 50 meters (with aircraft on ground) and 10 Kilometers (with a flying object), in a secure mode with zero packet loss. The WTRs have also qualified the requisite tests for airborne certification
