Migrating medical communications software to a multi-tenant cloud environment
The rise of cloud computing has paved the way for many new applications. Many of these new cloud applications are also multi-tenant, ensuring multiple end users can make use of the same application instance. While these technologies make it possible to create many new applications, many legacy applications can also benefit from the added flexibility and cost-savings of cloud computing and multi-tenancy. In this paper, we describe the steps required to migrate a. NET-based medical communications application to the Windows Azure public cloud environment, and the steps required to add multi-tenancy to the application. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of our migration approach. We found that the migration to the cloud itself requires only a limited amount of changes to the application, but that this also limited the benefits, as individual instances would only be partially used. Adding multi-tenancy requires more changes, but when this is done, it has the potential to greatly reduce the cost of running the application
Power Management Techniques for Data Centers: A Survey
With growing use of internet and exponential growth in amount of data to be
stored and processed (known as 'big data'), the size of data centers has
greatly increased. This, however, has resulted in significant increase in the
power consumption of the data centers. For this reason, managing power
consumption of data centers has become essential. In this paper, we highlight
the need of achieving energy efficiency in data centers and survey several
recent architectural techniques designed for power management of data centers.
We also present a classification of these techniques based on their
characteristics. This paper aims to provide insights into the techniques for
improving energy efficiency of data centers and encourage the designers to
invent novel solutions for managing the large power dissipation of data

NFV Based Gateways for Virtualized Wireless Sensors Networks: A Case Study
Virtualization enables the sharing of a same wireless sensor network (WSN) by
multiple applications. However, in heterogeneous environments, virtualized
wireless sensor networks (VWSN) raises new challenges such as the need for
on-the-fly, dynamic, elastic and scalable provisioning of gateways. Network
Functions Virtualization (NFV) is an emerging paradigm that can certainly aid
in tackling these new challenges. It leverages standard virtualization
technology to consolidate special-purpose network elements on top of commodity
hardware. This article presents a case study on NFV based gateways for VWSNs.
In the study, a VWSN gateway provider, operates and manages an NFV based
infrastructure. We use two different brands of wireless sensors. The NFV
infrastructure makes possible the dynamic, elastic and scalable deployment of
gateway modules in this heterogeneous VWSN environment. The prototype built

Document Archiving, Replication and Migration Container for Mobile Web Users
With the increasing use of mobile workstations for a wide variety of tasks
and associated information needs, and with many variations of available
networks, access to data becomes a prime consideration. This paper discusses
issues of workstation mobility and proposes a solution wherein the data
structures are accessed in an encapsulated form - through the Portable File
System (PFS) wrapper. The paper discusses an implementation of the Portable
File System, highlighting the architecture and commenting upon performance of
an experimental system. Although investigations have been focused upon mobile
access of WWW documents, this technique could be applied to any mobile data

Seamless mobility with personal servers
We describe the concept and the taxonomy of personal servers, and their implications in seamless mobility. Personal servers could offer electronic services independently of network availability or quality, provide a greater flexibility in the choice of user access device, and support the key concept of continuous user experience. We describe the organization of mobile and remote personal servers, define three relevant communication modes, and discuss means for users to exploit seamless services on the personal server
