    Evolution and Modern Approaches for Thermal Analysis of Electrical Machines

    In this paper, the authors present an extended survey on the evolution and the modern approaches in the thermal analysis of electrical machines. The improvements and the new techniques proposed in the last decade are analyzed in depth and compared in order to highlight the qualities and defects of each. In particular, thermal analysis based on lumped-parameter thermal network, finite-element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics are considered in this paper. In addition, an overview of the problems linked to the thermal parameter determination and computation is proposed and discussed. Taking into account the aims of this paper, a detailed list of books and papers is reported in the references to help researchers interested in these topics

    Design and Performance Analysis of Double Stator Axial Flux PM Generator for Rim Driven Marine Current Turbines

    This paper deals with the design and performance analysis of double stator axial flux permanent magnet generators for rim-driven marine current turbines (MCT). Indeed for submarine applications, drive train reliability is a key feature to reduce maintenance requirements. Rim-driven direct-drive multi-stator generators can therefore be a very interesting solution to improve this reliability. In this context, the presented work focus on the design of a double-stator axial flux permanent magnets (PM) generator as a rim-driven direct-drive multi-stator generator. The paper details the models, specifications and an optimization procedure that allow to preliminary design these kind of generators for rim-driven marine turbines. Thereafter, validations with finite elements computations and performance analysis considering particular design of rimdriven generators are presented. The obtained results highlight some designs issues of PM generators for rim driven marine turbines. In order to assess the effectiveness of the double stator axial flux PM generator, a comparison with a designed surface mounted radial flux PM generator for rim marine turbines is carried out..     A design study and analyses of a 10 kW-hr, 15 kW mechanical capacitor system was studied. It was determined that magnetically supported wheels constructed of advanced composites have the potential for high energy density and high power density. Structural concepts are analyzed that yield the highest energy density of any structural design yet reported. Particular attention was paid to the problem of 'friction' caused by magnetic and I to the second power R losses in the suspension and motor-generator subsystems, and low design friction levels have been achieved. The potentially long shelf life of this system, and the absence of wearing parts, provide superior performance over conventional flywheels supported with mechanical bearings.     The Conversion of an Induction Motor to a Synchronous Alternator for Wind Power Application

    This study was conducted to analyze and record the procedures necessary to convert a ten horsepower three phase induction motor into a ten pole three phase synchronous alternator, suitable for use n a wind energy conversion system. It was undertaken in response to the high cost of commercially produced wind energy machines. A search of current literature revealed little in the area of motor or generator redesign, and no specific instructions regarding the conversion of an induction motor to a synchronous alternator. Methods: The redesign process was conducted using a locally obtained ten horsepower motor and common motor repair materials. A method based on experimentation was used to determine the alternator design parameters. The processes of machining, fitting, winding, baking, assembly, and testing were conducted in the instructional laboratories at the University of North Dakota. Results: The redesigned machine was tested for power output and found to operate satisfactorily as an alternator. The output voltage when the machine was operated at full load was lower than anticipated. The machine showed no signs of excessive internal temperature when operated at full load for periods greater than one half hour. The power conversion efficiency was calculated at 71.7 percent. The results of the study indicate that the original objectives were met. Conclusions: The conclusions reached from this study were that: (1) a motor or generator is designed to operate most efficiently at its rated speed. A change in rated speed will not take full advantage of the iron in the machine from a magnetic standpoint, and (2) any individual with an interest in mechanical and electrical machines, and access to a lathe and milling machine, could perform the motor to generator conversion. Recommendations: Based on the research conducted during the study, it was recommended that further research be conducted in the following areas: (1) the design of the field for both 12 and 117 volts, depending on the connection scheme, (2) the establishment of the relationship between the air gap length and the output terminal voltage, (3) the establishment of the relationship between the pole shoe shape and the output voltage wave-form, (4) the alternator with a field current regulator designed to be fully excited at below rated rotor speed, (5) permanent magnets in the rotating field, (6) the repulsion induction motor as a direct current generator, (7) an excitation system for an induction generator that would not ’*equire utility company power

    Trade-off analysis and design of a Hydraulic Energy Scavenger

    In the last years there has been a growing interest in intelligent, autonomous devices for household applications. In the near future this technology will be part of our society; sensing and actuating will be integrated in the environment of our houses by means of energy scavengers and wireless microsystems. These systems will be capable of monitoring the environment, communicating with people and among each other, actuating and supplying themselves independently. This concept is now possible thanks to the low power consumption of electronic devices and accurate design of energy scavengers to harvest energy from the surrounding environment. In principle, an autonomous device comprises three main subsystems: an energy scavenger, an energy storage unit and an operational stage. The energy scavenger is capable of harvesting very small amounts of energy from the surroundings and converting it into electrical energy. This energy can be stored in a small storage unit like a small battery or capacitor, thus being available as a power supply. The operational stage can perform a variety of tasks depending on the application. Inside its application range, this kind of system presents several advantages with respect to regular devices using external energy supplies. They can be simpler to apply as no external connections are needed; they are environmentally friendly and might be economically advantageous in the long term. Furthermore, their autonomous nature permits the application in locations where the local energy grid is not present and allows them to be ‘hidden' in the environment, being independent from interaction with humans. In the present paper an energy-harvesting system used to supply a hydraulic control valve of a heating system for a typical residential application is studied. The system converts the kinetic energy from the water flow inside the pipes of the heating system to power the energy scavenger. The harvesting unit is composed of a hydraulic turbine that converts the kinetic energy of the water flow into rotational motion to drive a small electric generator. The design phases comprise a trade-off analysis to define the most suitable hydraulic turbine and electric generator for the energy scavenger, and an optimization of the components to satisfy the systems specification

    This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of techniques for harmonic related power quality improvement of electrical generation systems. An increasing interest in these aspects is due to the ever more stringent power quality requirements, deriving from new grid codes and compliancy standards, aimed at limiting waveform harmonic distortion at all points of the distribution network. Although a wealth of literature is available for such techniques, it has never been compiled into a handbook incorporating all the solutions aimed at both electrical machine and power systems engineers
