A directionally based bandwidth reservation scheme for call admission control
This paper proposes a new advanced Call Admission Control(CAC) strategy involving for the first time, a bandwidth reservation scheme that is influenced by the direction attribute of a mobile terminal (MT). Aside from the Quality-of-Service (QoS) parameters, the direction attribute plays a key role in efficiently reserving resources for MTs supporting multimedia communications for different QoS classes. The framework for a direction-based CAC system is entirely distributed and may be viewed as a message passing system, where MTs inform their neighbouring base stations (BS) not only of their QoS requirements, but also of their mobility parameters. The base stations then predict future demand and reserve resources accordingly, only admitting those terminals that can be adequately supported. The bandwidth reservation scheme proposed in this paper, integrates the direction attribute into the conventional Guard Channel (GC) scheme. Simulation results prove that this new scheme offers significant improvements in both Call Blocking Probability (CBP) and bandwidth utilization, under a variety of differing traffic conditions
Cross-layer design of multi-hop wireless networks
MULTI -hop wireless networks are usually defined as a collection of nodes
equipped with radio transmitters, which not only have the capability to
communicate each other in a multi-hop fashion, but also to route each others’ data
packets. The distributed nature of such networks makes them suitable for a variety of
applications where there are no assumed reliable central entities, or controllers, and
may significantly improve the scalability issues of conventional single-hop wireless
networks.
This Ph.D. dissertation mainly investigates two aspects of the research issues
related to the efficient multi-hop wireless networks design, namely: (a) network
protocols and (b) network management, both in cross-layer design paradigms to
ensure the notion of service quality, such as quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh
networks (WMNs) for backhaul applications and quality of information (QoI) in
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sensing tasks. Throughout the presentation of
this Ph.D. dissertation, different network settings are used as illustrative examples,
however the proposed algorithms, methodologies, protocols, and models are not
restricted in the considered networks, but rather have wide applicability.
First, this dissertation proposes a cross-layer design framework integrating
a distributed proportional-fair scheduler and a QoS routing algorithm, while using
WMNs as an illustrative example. The proposed approach has significant performance
gain compared with other network protocols. Second, this dissertation proposes
a generic admission control methodology for any packet network, wired and
wireless, by modeling the network as a black box, and using a generic mathematical

function and Taylor expansion to capture the admission impact. Third, this dissertation
further enhances the previous designs by proposing a negotiation process,
to bridge the applications’ service quality demands and the resource management,
while using WSNs as an illustrative example. This approach allows the negotiation
among different service classes and WSN resource allocations to reach the optimal
operational status. Finally, the guarantees of the service quality are extended to
the environment of multiple, disconnected, mobile subnetworks, where the question
of how to maintain communications using dynamically controlled, unmanned data
ferries is investigated

Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
A Decision-Theoretic Approach to Resource Allocation in Wireless Multimedia Networks
The allocation of scarce spectral resources to support as many user
applications as possible while maintaining reasonable quality of service is a
fundamental problem in wireless communication. We argue that the problem is
best formulated in terms of decision theory. We propose a scheme that takes
decision-theoretic concerns (like preferences) into account and discuss the
difficulties and subtleties involved in applying standard techniques from the
theory of Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) in constructing an algorithm that is
decision-theoretically optimal. As an example of the proposed framework, we
construct such an algorithm under some simplifying assumptions. Additionally,
we present analysis and simulation results that show that our algorithm meets
its design goals. Finally, we investigate how far from optimal one well-known
heuristic is. The main contribution of our results is in providing insight and

A Fair and Efficient Packet Scheduling Scheme for IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access Systems
This paper proposes a fair and efficient QoS scheduling scheme for IEEE
802.16 BWA systems that satisfies both throughput and delay guarantee to
various real and non-real time applications. The proposed QoS scheduling scheme
is compared with an existing QoS scheduling scheme proposed in literature in
recent past. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling scheme can
provide a tight QoS guarantee in terms of delay, delay violation rate and
throughput for all types of traffic as defined in the WiMAX standard, thereby
maintaining the fairness and helps to eliminate starvation of lower priority
class services. Bandwidth utilization of the system and fairness index of the
resources are also encountered to validate the QoS provided by our proposed
scheduling scheme

On-board congestion control for satellite packet switching networks
It is desirable to incorporate packet switching capability on-board for future communication satellites. Because of the statistical nature of packet communication, incoming traffic fluctuates and may cause congestion. Thus, it is necessary to incorporate a congestion control mechanism as part of the on-board processing to smooth and regulate the bursty traffic. Although there are extensive studies on congestion control for both baseband and broadband terrestrial networks, these schemes are not feasible for space based switching networks because of the unique characteristics of satellite link. Here, we propose a new congestion control method for on-board satellite packet switching. This scheme takes into consideration the long propagation delay in satellite link and takes advantage of the the satellite's broadcasting capability. It divides the control between the ground terminals and satellite, but distributes the primary responsibility to ground terminals and only requires minimal hardware resource on-board satellite

Survey of congestion control techniques for an ATM network
The emerging broadband integrated services digital network is expected to adopt ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) as the transport network. This new network must support several classes of service with varying delay and loss requirements. It must also operate with link speeds in the hundreds of megabits per second and be scalable up to potential link speeds on the order of gigabits per second. The requirements to support multiple services and high speed make the congestion control in an ATM network difficult. Throughput Optimal On-Line Algorithms for Advanced Resource Reservation in Ultra High-Speed Networks
Advanced channel reservation is emerging as an important feature of ultra
high-speed networks requiring the transfer of large files. Applications include
scientific data transfers and database backup. In this paper, we present two
new, on-line algorithms for advanced reservation, called BatchAll and BatchLim,
that are guaranteed to achieve optimal throughput performance, based on
multi-commodity flow arguments. Both algorithms are shown to have
polynomial-time complexity and provable bounds on the maximum delay for
1+epsilon bandwidth augmented networks. The BatchLim algorithm returns the
completion time of a connection immediately as a request is placed, but at the
expense of a slightly looser competitive ratio than that of BatchAll. We also
present a simple approach that limits the number of parallel paths used by the
algorithms while provably bounding the maximum reduction factor in the
transmission throughput. We show that, although the number of different paths
can be exponentially large, the actual number of paths needed to approximate
the flow is quite small and proportional to the number of edges in the network.
Simulations for a number of topologies show that, in practice, 3 to 5 parallel
paths are sufficient to achieve close to optimal performance. The performance
of the competitive algorithms are also compared to a greedy benchmark, both
