D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 375-384).In this thesis, I detail the design and control of a linear long stroke fast tool servo (FTS) with integral balance mass. The long stroke fast tool servo consists of an air bearing stage driven by a unique three phase oil cooled linear motor. The linear FTS has a travel range of 25 mm and is capable of 100 m/s² accelerations. The FTS is mounted to a T-base diamond turning machine (DTM). The FTS is attached to a hydrostatic bearing supported in-feed stage which is driven by a second linear motor. The in-feed stage is allowed to move in response to the FTS actuation forces and thus acts as an integral balance mass. We have developed a unique control structure to control the position of both the FTS and the reaction mass. The FTS controller employs a conventional lead-lag inner loop, an adaptive feedforward cancelation (AFC) outer loop, and command pre-shifting. For the FTS controller, the AFC resonators are placed in the forward path which creates infinite gain at the resonator frequency. The controller for the hydrostatic stage consists of a conventional lead-lag control inner-loop and a base acceleration feedback controller. The acceleration feedback controller consists of a high-pass filter, a double integrator for phase compensation, and an array of AFC resonators. For the base acceleration controller, the AFC resonators are placed in the feedback path and thus act as narrow-frequency notch filters. The notch filters allow the hydrostatic stage/balance mass to move freely at the commanded trajectory harmonics thus attenuating the forces introduced into the DTM. The AFC control loops are designed using a new loop shaping perspective for AFC control. In this thesis, we present two extensions to AFC control.(cont.) The first extension called Oscillator Amplitude Control (OAC) is used to approximate the convergence characteristics of an AFC controller. The second extension termed Amplitude Modulated Adaptive Feedforward Cancelation (AMAFC) is designed to exactly cancel disturbances with a time varying amplitude.by Marten F. Byl.Ph.D

    Control oriented modelling of an integrated attitude and vibration suppression architecture for large space structures

    This thesis is divided into two parts. The main focus of the research, namely active vibration control for large flexible spacecraft, is exposed in Part I and, in parallel, the topic of machine learning techniques for modern space applications is described in Part II. In particular, this thesis aims at proposing an end-to-end general architecture for an integrated attitude-vibration control system, starting from the design of structural models to the synthesis of the control laws. To this purpose, large space structures based on realistic missions are investigated as study cases, in accordance with the tendency of increasing the size of the scientific instruments to improve their sensitivity, being the drawback an increase of its overall flexibility. An active control method is therefore investigated to guarantee satisfactory pointing and maximum deformation by avoiding classical stiffening methods. Therefore, the instrument is designed to be supported by an active deployable frame hosting an optimal minimum set of collocated smart actuators and sensors. Different spatial configurations for the placement of the distributed network of active devices are investigated, both at closed-loop and open-loop levels. Concerning closed-loop techniques, a method to optimally place the poles of the system via a Direct Velocity Feedback (DVF) controller is proposed to identify simultaneously the location and number of active devices for vibration control with an in-cascade optimization technique. Then, two general and computationally efficient open-loop placement techniques, namely Gramian and Modal Strain Energy (MSE)-based methods, are adopted as opposed to heuristic algorithms, which imply high computational costs and are generally not suitable for high-dimensional systems, to propose a placement architecture for generically shaped tridimensional space structures. Then, an integrated robust control architecture for the spacecraft is presented as composed of both an attitude control scheme and a vibration control system. To conclude the study, attitude manoeuvres are performed to excite main flexible modes and prove the efficacy of both attitude and vibration control architectures. Moreover, Part II is dedicated to address the problem of improving autonomy and self-awareness of modern spacecraft, by using machine-learning based techniques to carry out Failure Identification for large space structures and improving the pointing performance of spacecraft (both flexible satellite with sloshing models and small rigid platforms) when performing repetitive Earth Observation manoeuvres

    Modelling and real-time control of a high performance rotary wood planing machine

    Rotary planing is one of the most valuable machining operations in the timber processing industry. It has been established that cutting tool inaccuracy and forced vibration during the machining process are the primary causes of surface quality degradation. The main aim of this thesis is to design a control architecture that is suitable for adaptive operation of a wood planing machining in order to improve the quality of its surface finish. In order to achieve the stated goal, thorough understanding of the effects of machine deficiencies on surface finish quality is required. Therefore, a generic simulation model for synthesising the surface profiles produced by wood planing process is first developed. The model is used to simulate the combined effects of machining parameters, vibration and cutting tool inaccuracy on the resultant surface profiles. It has been postulated that online monitoring of surface finish quality can be used to provide feedback information for a secondary control loop for the machining process, which will lead to the production of consistently high quality surface finishes. There is an existing vision-based wood surface profile measurement technique, but the application of the technique has been limited to static wood samples. This thesis extends the application of the technique to moving wood samples. It is shown experimentally that the method is suitable for in-process surface profile measurements. The current industrial wood planing machines do not have the capability of measuring and adjusting process parameters in real-time. Therefore, knowledge of the causes of surface finish degradation would enable the operators to optimise the mechanical structure of the machines offline. For this reason, two novel approaches for characterising defects on planed timber surfaces have been created in this thesis using synthetic data. The output of this work is a software tool that can assist machine operators in inferring the causes of defects based on the waviness components of the workpiece surface finish. The main achievement in this research is the design of a new active wood planing technique that combines real-time cutter path optimisation (cutting tool inaccuracy compensation) with vibration disturbance rejection. The technique is based on real-time vertical displacements of the machine spindle. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a smart wood planing machine show significant improvements in the dynamic performance of the machine and the produced surface finish quality. Potential areas for future research include application of the defects characterisation techniques to real data and full integration of the dynamic surface profile measurements with the smart wood planing machine

    Stochastic Modeling and Optimal Control for Colloidal Organization, Navigation, and Machines

    Colloidal suspensions consisting of particles undergoing Brownian motion are ubiquitous in scientific research and emerging technologies. Longstanding challenges in strategic control of complex colloidal systems are to investigate the principle of optimal control, overcome the curse of dimensionality, design efficient algorithms, and develop generalizable control strategies. In the first part of this dissertation, we present methods and results from three case studies to illustrate how these challenges are addressed from the perspectives of modeling and optimal control. Single-agent optimal navigation in complex mazes. We investigate the optimal navigation principle of a self-propelled colloidal particle in complex mazes. We construct approximate Markov chain model and use the Markov decision process framework to obtain the general principle of optimal navigation. Multiple-agent cooperation and coordination for colloidal machines. Using self-propelled Janus motors as the model system, we illustrate a new paradigm for cargo capture and transport based on multiple-agent feedback control. The control algorithm can coordinate multiple motors to cooperate on forming a reconfigurable machine for cargo capture and transport. Low-dimensional modeling and ensemble control. Optimal control in a high dimensional self-assembly processes with limited actuations presents a challenge in both modelling and controller design. We use colloidal crystallization in an electric field as a model system to illustrate the methodologies of low-dimensional modeling and control for self-assembly processes. We use a nonlinear machine learning algorithm to characterize the dimensionality and parametrize the low-dimension manifold on which the system evolves. A low-dimensional Smoluchowski model is constructed and calibrated to illustrate the dynamic pathways of the assembly process. The resulting model is further leveraged to perform optimal control of the assembly process. In the second part of dissertation, we report three additional relevant research projects on colloidal interaction, dynamics, and control. The first project extends ensemble control from finite-size systems to infinite-size systems using feedback control in sedimentation. The second project develops a computational method to model depletion interactions between general geometric objects The third project develops modified Stokesian dynamics methods to investigate the colloidal rod motion near a planar wall with hydrodynamic interactions

    Active control of turbulence-induced helicopter vibration

    Helicopter vibration signatures induced by severe atmospheric turbulence have been shown to differ considerably from nominal, still air vibration. The perturbations of the transmission frequency have significant implications for the design of passive and active vibration alleviation devices, which are generally tuned to the nominal vibration frequency. This thesis investigates the existence of the phenomena in several realistic atmospheric turbulence environments, generated using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) engineering software and assimilated within a high-fidelity rotorcraft simulation, RASCAL. The RASCAL simulation is modified to calculate blade element sampling of the gust, enabling thorough, high frequency analyses of the rotor response. In a final modification, a numerical, integration-based inverse simulation algorithm, GENISA is incorporated and the augmented simulation is henceforth referred to as HISAT. Several implementation issues arise from the symbiosis, principally because of the modelling of variable rotorspeed and lead-lag motion. However, a novel technique for increasing the numerical stability margins is proposed and tested successfully. Two active vibration control schemes, higher harmonic control 'HHC' and individual blade control 'IBC', are then evaluated against a 'worst-case' sharp-edged gust field. The higher harmonic controller demonstrates a worrying lack of robustness, and actually begins to contribute to the vibration levels. Several intuitive modifications to the algorithm are proposed but only disturbance estimation is successful. A new simulation model of coupled blade motion is derived and implemented using MATLAB and is used to design a simple IBC compensator. Following bandwidth problems, a redesign is proposed using H theory which improves the controller performance. Disturbance prediction/estimation is attempted using artificial neural networks to limited success. Overall, the aims and objectives of the research are met
