dissertationVirtual environments provide a consistent and relatively inexpensive method of training individuals. They often include haptic feedback in the form of forces applied to a manipulandum or thimble to provide a more immersive and educational experience. However, the limited haptic feedback provided in these systems tends to be restrictive and frustrating to use. Providing tactile feedback in addition to this kinesthetic feedback can enhance the user's ability to manipulate and interact with virtual objects while providing a greater level of immersion. This dissertation advances the state-of-the-art by providing a better understanding of tactile feedback and advancing combined tactilekinesthetic systems. The tactile feedback described within this dissertation is provided by a finger-mounted device called the contact location display (CLD). Rather than displaying the entire contact surface, the device displays (feeds back) information only about the center of contact between the user's finger and a virtual surface. In prior work, the CLD used specialized two-dimensional environments to provide smooth tactile feedback. Using polygonal environments would greatly enhance the device's usefulness. However, the surface discontinuities created by the facets on these models are rendered through the CLD, regardless of traditional force shading algorithms. To address this issue, a haptic shading algorithm was developed to provide smooth tactile and kinesthetic interaction with general polygonal models. Two experiments were used to evaluate the shading algorithm. iv To better understand the design requirements of tactile devices, three separate experiments were run to evaluate the perception thresholds for cue localization, backlash, and system delay. These experiments establish quantitative design criteria for tactile devices. These results can serve as the maximum (i.e., most demanding) device specifications for tactile-kinesthetic haptic systems where the user experiences tactile feedback as a function of his/her limb motions. Lastly, a revision of the CLD was constructed and evaluated. By taking the newly evaluated design criteria into account, the CLD device became smaller and lighter weight, while providing a full two degree-of-freedom workspace that covers the bottom hemisphere of the finger. A Vector-Integration-to-Endpoint Model for Performance of Viapoint Movements
Viapoint (VP) movements are movements to a desired point that are constrained to pass through an intermediate point. Studies have shown that VP movements possess properties, such as smooth curvature around the VP, that are not explicable by treating VP movements as strict concatenations of simpler point-to-point (PTP) movements. Such properties have led some theorists to propose whole-trajectory optimization models, which imply that the entire trajectory is pre-computed before movement initiation. This paper reports new experiments conducted to systematically compare VP with PTP trajectories. Analyses revealed a statistically significant early directional deviation in VP movements but no associated curvature change. An explanation of this effect is offered by extending the Vector-Integration-To-Endpoint (VITE) model (Bullock and Grossberg, 1988), which postulates that voluntary movement trajectories emerge as internal gating signals control the integration of continuously computed vector commands based on the evolving, perceptible difference between desired and actual position variables. The model explains the observed trajectories of VP and PTP movements as emergent properties of a dynamical system that does not precompute entire trajectories before movement initiation. The new model includes a working memory and a stage sensitive to time-to-contact information. These cooperate to control serial performance. Shear-invariant Sliding Contact Perception with a Soft Tactile Sensor
Manipulation tasks often require robots to be continuously in contact with an
object. Therefore tactile perception systems need to handle continuous contact
data. Shear deformation causes the tactile sensor to output path-dependent
readings in contrast to discrete contact readings. As such, in some
continuous-contact tasks, sliding can be regarded as a disturbance over the
sensor signal. Here we present a shear-invariant perception method based on
principal component analysis (PCA) which outputs the required information about
the environment despite sliding motion. A compliant tactile sensor (the TacTip)
is used to investigate continuous tactile contact. First, we evaluate the
method offline using test data collected whilst the sensor slides over an edge.
Then, the method is used within a contour-following task applied to 6 objects
with varying curvatures; all contours are successfully traced. The method
demonstrates generalisation capabilities and could underlie a more
sophisticated controller for challenging manipulation or exploration tasks in

A bistable soft gripper with mechanically embedded sensing and actuation for fast closed-loop grasping
Soft robotic grippers are shown to be high effective for grasping
unstructured objects with simple sensing and control strategies. However, they
are still limited by their speed, sensing capabilities and actuation mechanism.
Hence, their usage have been restricted in highly dynamic grasping tasks. This
paper presents a soft robotic gripper with tunable bistable properties for
sensor-less dynamic grasping. The bistable mechanism allows us to store
arbitrarily large strain energy in the soft system which is then released upon
contact. The mechanism also provides flexibility on the type of actuation
mechanism as the grasping and sensing phase is completely passive. Theoretical
background behind the mechanism is presented with finite element analysis to
provide insights into design parameters. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate
sensor-less dynamic grasping of an unknown object within 0.02 seconds,
including the time to sense and actuate
Neural models of inter-cortical networks in the primate visual system for navigation, attention, path perception, and static and kinetic figure-ground perception
Vision provides the primary means by which many animals distinguish foreground objects from their background and coordinate locomotion through complex environments. The present thesis focuses on mechanisms within the visual system that afford figure-ground segregation and self-motion perception. These processes are modeled as emergent outcomes of dynamical interactions among neural populations in several brain areas. This dissertation specifies and simulates how border-ownership signals emerge in cortex, and how the medial superior temporal area (MSTd) represents path of travel and heading, in the presence of independently moving objects (IMOs).
Neurons in visual cortex that signal border-ownership, the perception that a border belongs to a figure and not its background, have been identified but the underlying mechanisms have been unclear. A model is presented that demonstrates that inter-areal interactions across model visual areas V1-V2-V4 afford border-ownership signals similar to those reported in electrophysiology for visual displays containing figures defined by luminance contrast. Competition between model neurons with different receptive field sizes is crucial for reconciling the occlusion of one object by another. The model is extended to determine border-ownership when object borders are kinetically-defined, and to detect the location and size of shapes, despite the curvature of their boundary contours.
Navigation in the real world requires humans to travel along curved paths. Many perceptual models have been proposed that focus on heading, which specifies the direction of travel along straight paths, but not on path curvature. In primates, MSTd has been implicated in heading perception. A model of V1, medial temporal area (MT), and MSTd is developed herein that demonstrates how MSTd neurons can simultaneously encode path curvature and heading. Human judgments of heading are accurate in rigid environments, but are biased in the presence of IMOs. The model presented here explains the bias through recurrent connectivity in MSTd and avoids the use of differential motion detectors which, although used in existing models to discount the motion of an IMO relative to its background, is not biologically plausible. Reported modulation of the MSTd population due to attention is explained through competitive dynamics between subpopulations responding to bottom-up and top- down signals

fMRI correlates of subjective reversals in ambiguous structure-from-motion
We used fMRI to examine the neural correlates of subjective reversals for bistable structure-from-motion. We compared transparent random-dot kinematograms depicting either a cylinder rotating in depth or two flat surfaces translating in opposite directions at apparently different depths. For both such stimuli, the motion of dots on the different apparent depth planes typically appears to reverse direction periodically on prolonged viewing. Yet for cylindrical but not flat stimuli, such subjective reversals also coincide with apparent reversal of 3D rotation direction. We hypothesized that the lateral occipital complex (region LOC), sensitive to 3D form, might show greater event-related activity for subjective reversals of cylindrical than flat stimuli; conversely, motion-sensitive hMT+/V5 should respond in common to subjective reversals for either type of stimuli, as both are perceived as changes in planar motion. We obtained an event-related measure of neural activity associated with subjective reversals after first factoring out block-related differences between cylindrical versus flat stimuli (and thereby the associated low-level blocked stimulus differences). In support of our hypothesis, only the cylindrical stimuli produced reversal-related activity in contralateral human LOC. In contrast, the hMT+/V5 complex was activated alike by subjective reversals for both cylindrical and flat stimuli. Intriguingly, V1 also showed (contralateral) specificity for rotational reversals, suggesting a possible feedback influence from LOC. These results reveal specific neural correlates for subjective switches of 3D rotation versus translation, as distinct from subjective reversals in general
