People tracking by cooperative fusion of RADAR and camera sensors
Accurate 3D tracking of objects from monocular camera poses challenges due to the loss of depth during projection. Although ranging by RADAR has proven effective in highway environments, people tracking remains beyond the capability of single sensor systems. In this paper, we propose a cooperative RADAR-camera fusion method for people tracking on the ground plane. Using average person height, joint detection likelihood is calculated by back-projecting detections from the camera onto the RADAR Range-Azimuth data. Peaks in the joint likelihood, representing candidate targets, are fed into a Particle Filter tracker. Depending on the association outcome, particles are updated using the associated detections (Tracking by Detection), or by sampling the raw likelihood itself (Tracking Before Detection). Utilizing the raw likelihood data has the advantage that lost targets are continuously tracked even if the camera or RADAR signal is below the detection threshold. We show that in single target, uncluttered environments, the proposed method entirely outperforms camera-only tracking. Experiments in a real-world urban environment also confirm that the cooperative fusion tracker produces significantly better estimates, even in difficult and ambiguous situations
A new fuzzy based algorithm for solving stereo vagueness in detecting and tracking people
This paper describes a system capable of detecting and tracking various people using a new approach based on colour, stereo vision and fuzzy logic. Initially, in the people detection phase, two fuzzy systems are used to filter out false positives of a face detector. Then, in the tracking phase, a new fuzzy logic based particle filter (FLPF) is proposed to fuse stereo and colour information assigning different confidence levels to each of these information sources. Information regarding depth and occlusion is used to create these confidence levels. This way, the system is able to keep track of people, in the reference camera image, even when either stereo information or colour information is confusing or not reliable. To carry out the tracking, the new FLPF is used, so that several particles are generated while several fuzzy systems compute the possibility that some of the generated particles correspond to the new position of people. Our technique outperforms two well known tracking approaches, one based on the method from Nummiaro et al. [1] and other based on the Kalman/meanshift tracker method in Comaniciu and Ramesh [2]. All these approaches were tested using several colour-with-distance sequences simulating real life scenarios. The results show that our system is able to keep track of people in most of the situations where other trackers fail, as well as to determine the size of their projections in the camera image. RGB-D datasets using microsoft kinect or similar sensors: a survey
RGB-D data has turned out to be a very useful representation of an indoor scene for solving fundamental computer vision problems. It takes the advantages of the color image that provides appearance information of an object and also the depth image that is immune to the variations in color, illumination, rotation angle and scale. With the invention of the low-cost Microsoft Kinect sensor, which was initially used for gaming and later became a popular device for computer vision, high quality RGB-D data can be acquired easily. In recent years, more and more RGB-D image/video datasets dedicated to various applications have become available, which are of great importance to benchmark the state-of-the-art. In this paper, we systematically survey popular RGB-D datasets for different applications including object recognition, scene classification, hand gesture recognition, 3D-simultaneous localization and mapping, and pose estimation. We provide the insights into the characteristics of each important dataset, and compare the popularity and the difficulty of those datasets. Overall, the main goal of this survey is to give a comprehensive description about the available RGB-D datasets and thus to guide researchers in the selection of suitable datasets for evaluating their algorithms
Deep Detection of People and their Mobility Aids for a Hospital Robot
Robots operating in populated environments encounter many different types of
people, some of whom might have an advanced need for cautious interaction,
because of physical impairments or their advanced age. Robots therefore need to
recognize such advanced demands to provide appropriate assistance, guidance or
other forms of support. In this paper, we propose a depth-based perception
pipeline that estimates the position and velocity of people in the environment
and categorizes them according to the mobility aids they use: pedestrian,
person in wheelchair, person in a wheelchair with a person pushing them, person
with crutches and person using a walker. We present a fast region proposal
method that feeds a Region-based Convolutional Network (Fast R-CNN). With this,
we speed up the object detection process by a factor of seven compared to a
dense sliding window approach. We furthermore propose a probabilistic position,
velocity and class estimator to smooth the CNN's detections and account for
occlusions and misclassifications. In addition, we introduce a new hospital
dataset with over 17,000 annotated RGB-D images. Extensive experiments confirm
that our pipeline successfully keeps track of people and their mobility aids,
even in challenging situations with multiple people from different categories
and frequent occlusions. Videos of our experiments and the dataset are

RGBD Datasets: Past, Present and Future
Since the launch of the Microsoft Kinect, scores of RGBD datasets have been
released. These have propelled advances in areas from reconstruction to gesture
recognition. In this paper we explore the field, reviewing datasets across
eight categories: semantics, object pose estimation, camera tracking, scene
reconstruction, object tracking, human actions, faces and identification. By
extracting relevant information in each category we help researchers to find
appropriate data for their needs, and we consider which datasets have succeeded
in driving computer vision forward and why.
Finally, we examine the future of RGBD datasets. We identify key areas which
are currently underexplored, and suggest that future directions may include
synthetic data and dense reconstructions of static and dynamic scenes.Comment: 8 pages excluding references (CVPR style
Real-Time RGB-D based Template Matching Pedestrian Detection
Pedestrian detection is one of the most popular topics in computer vision and
robotics. Considering challenging issues in multiple pedestrian detection, we
present a real-time depth-based template matching people detector. In this
paper, we propose different approaches for training the depth-based template.
We train multiple templates for handling issues due to various upper-body
orientations of the pedestrians and different levels of detail in depth-map of
the pedestrians with various distances from the camera. And, we take into
account the degree of reliability for different regions of sliding window by
proposing the weighted template approach. Furthermore, we combine the
depth-detector with an appearance based detector as a verifier to take
advantage of the appearance cues for dealing with the limitations of depth
data. We evaluate our method on the challenging ETH dataset sequence. We show

Indoor assistance for visually impaired people using a RGB-D camera
In this paper a navigational aid for visually impaired people is presented. The system uses a RGB-D camera to perceive the environment and implements self-localization, obstacle detection and obstacle classification. The novelty of this work is threefold. First, self-localization is performed by means of a novel camera tracking approach that uses both depth and color information. Second, to provide the user with semantic information, obstacles are classified as walls, doors, steps and a residual class that covers isolated objects and bumpy parts on the floor. Third, in order to guarantee real time performance, the system is accelerated by offloading parallel operations to the GPU. Experiments demonstrate that the whole system is running at 9 Hz
