    Tree Memory Networks for Modelling Long-term Temporal Dependencies

    In the domain of sequence modelling, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) have been capable of achieving impressive results in a variety of application areas including visual question answering, part-of-speech tagging and machine translation. However this success in modelling short term dependencies has not successfully transitioned to application areas such as trajectory prediction, which require capturing both short term and long term relationships. In this paper, we propose a Tree Memory Network (TMN) for modelling long term and short term relationships in sequence-to-sequence mapping problems. The proposed network architecture is composed of an input module, controller and a memory module. In contrast to related literature, which models the memory as a sequence of historical states, we model the memory as a recursive tree structure. This structure more effectively captures temporal dependencies across both short term and long term sequences using its hierarchical structure. We demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed TMN in two practical problems, aircraft trajectory modelling and pedestrian trajectory modelling in a surveillance setting, and in both cases we outperform the current state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we perform an in depth analysis on the evolution of the memory module content over time and provide visual evidence on how the proposed TMN is able to map both long term and short term relationships efficiently via a hierarchical structure

    A Hybrid Templated-Based Composite Classification System

    An automatic target classification system contains a classifier which reads a feature as an input and outputs a class label. Typically, the feature is a vector of real numbers. Other features can be non-numeric, such as a string of symbols or alphabets. One method of improving the performance of an automatic classification system is through combining two or more independent classifiers that are complementary in nature. Complementary classifiers are observed by finding an optimal method for partitioning the problem space. For example, the individual classifiers may operate to identify specific objects. Another method may be to use classifiers that operate on different features. We propose a design for a hybrid composite classification system, which exploits both real-numbered and non-numeric features with a template matching classification scheme. This composite classification system is made up of two independent classification systems.These two independent classification systems, which receive input from two separate sensors are then combined over various fusion methods for the purpose of target identification. By using these two separate classifiers, we explore conditions that allow the two techniques to be complementary in nature, thus improving the overall performance of the classification system. We examine various fusion techniques, in search of the technique that generates the best results. We investigate different parameter spaces and fusion rules on example problems to demonstrate our classification system. Our examples consider various application areas to help further demonstrate the utility of our classifier. Optimal classifier performance is obtained using a mathematical framework, which takes into account decision variables based on decision-maker preferences and/or engineering specifications, depending upon the classification problem at hand

    An architectural selection framework for data fusion in sensor platforms

Fusion pertains to the merging or integration of information towards an enhanced level of awareness. This thesis provides a canonical overview of several major fusion architectures developed from the remote sensing and defense community. Additionally, it provides an assessment of current sensors and their platforms, the influence of reliability measures, and the connection to fusion applications. We present several types of architecture for managing multi-sensor data fusion, specifically as they relate to the tracking-correlation function and blackboard processing representations in knowledge engineering. Object-Process Methods are used to model the information fusion process and supporting systems. Several mathematical techniques are shown to be useful in the fusion of numerical properties, sensor data updating and the implementation of unique detection probabilities. Finally, we discuss the importance of fusion to the concept and operation of the Semantic Web, which promises new ways to exploit the synergy of multi-sensor data platforms. This requires the synthesis of fusion with ontology models for knowledge representation. We discuss the importance of fusion as a reuse process in ontological engineering, and review key lifecycle models in ontology development. The evolutionary approach to ontology development is considered the most useful and adaptable to the complexities of semantic networks. Several potential applications for data fusion are screened and ranked according to the Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) process model for information fusion. Based on these predetermined criteria, the case of medical diagnostic imaging was found to offer the most promising applications for fusion, on which future product platforms can be built.by Atif R.     The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included
