    Handwritten Character Recognition of a Vernacular Language: The Odia Script

    Optical Character Recognition, i.e., OCR taking into account the principle of applying electronic or mechanical translation of images from printed, manually written or typewritten sources to editable version. As of late, OCR technology has been utilized in most of the industries for better management of various documents. OCR helps to edit the text, allow us to search for a word or phrase, and store it more compactly in the computer memory for future use and moreover, it can be processed by other applications. In India, a couple of organizations have designed OCR for some mainstream Indic dialects, for example, Devanagari, Hindi, Bangla and to some extent Telugu, Tamil, Gurmukhi, Odia, etc. However, it has been observed that the progress for Odia script recognition is quite less when contrasted with different dialects. Any recognition process works on some nearby standard databases. Till now, no such standard database available in the literature for Odia script. Apart from the existing standard databases for other Indic languages, in this thesis, we have designed databases on handwritten Odia Digit, and character for the simulation of the proposed schemes. In this thesis, four schemes have been suggested, one for the recognition of Odia digit and other three for atomic Odia character. Various issues of handwritten character recognition have been examined including feature extraction, the grouping of samples based on some characteristics, and designing classifiers. Also, different features such as statistical as well as structural of a character have been studied. It is not necessary that the character written by a person next time would always be of same shape and stroke. Hence, variability in the personal writing of different individual makes the character recognition quite challenging. Standard classifiers have been utilized for the recognition of Odia character set. An array of Gabor filters has been employed for recognition of Odia digits. In this regard, each image is divided into four blocks of equal size. Gabor filters with various scales and orientations have been applied to these sub-images keeping other filter parameters constant. The average energy is computed for each transformed image to obtain a feature vector for each digit. Further, a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) has been employed to classify the samples taking the feature vector as input. In addition, the proposed scheme has also been tested on standard digit databases like MNIST and USPS. Toward the end of this part, an application has been intended to evaluate simple arithmetic equation. viii A multi-resolution scheme has been suggested to extract features from Odia atomic character and recognize them using the back propagation neural network. It has been observed that few Odia characters have a vertical line present toward the end. It helps in dividing the whole dataset into two subgroups, in particular, Group I and Group II such that all characters in Group I have a vertical line and rest are in Group II. The two class classification problem has been tackled by a single layer perceptron. Besides, the two-dimensional Discrete Orthogonal S-Transform (DOST) coefficients are extracted from images of each group, subsequently, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been applied to find significant features. For each group, a separate BPNN classifier is utilized to recognize the character set

    An intelligent framework for pre-processing ancient Thai manuscripts on palm leaves

    In Thailand’s early history, prior to the availability of paper and printing technologies, palm leaves were used to record information written by hand. These ancient documents contain invaluable knowledge. By digitising the manuscripts, the content can be preserved and made widely available to the interested community via electronic media. However, the content is difficult to access or retrieve. In order to extract relevant information from the document images efficiently, each step of the process requires reduction of irrelevant data such as noise or interference on the images. The pre-processing techniques serve the purpose of extracting regions of interest, reducing noise from the image and degrading the irrelevant background. The image can then be directly and efficiently processed for feature selection and extraction prior to the subsequent phase of character recognition. It is therefore the main objective of this study to develop an efficient and intelligent image preprocessing system that could be used to extract components from ancient manuscripts for information extraction and retrieval purposes. The main contributions of this thesis are the provision and enhancement of the region of interest by using an intelligent approach for the pre-processing of ancient Thai manuscripts on palm leaves and a detailed examination of the preprocessing techniques for palm leaf manuscripts. As noise reduction and binarisation are involved in the first step of pre-processing to eliminate noise and background from image documents, it is necessary for this step to provide a good quality output; otherwise, the accuracy of the subsequent stages will be affected. In this work, an intelligent approach to eliminate background was proposed and carried out by a selection of appropriate binarisation techniques using SVM. As there could be multiple binarisation techniques of choice, another approach was proposed to eliminate the background in this study in order to generate an optimal binarised image. The proposal is an ensemble architecture based on the majority vote scheme utilising local neighbouring information around a pixel of interest. To extract text from that binarised image, line segmentation was then applied based on the partial projection method as this method provides good results with slant texts and connected components. To improve the quality of the partial projection method, an Adaptive Partial Projection (APP) method was proposed. This technique adjusts the size of a character strip automatically by adapting the width of the strip to separate the connected component of consecutive lines through divide and conquer, and analysing the upper vowels and lower vowels of the text line. Finally, character segmentation was proposed using a hierarchical segmentation technique based on a contour-tracing algorithm. Touching components identified from the previous step were then separated by a trace of the background skeletons, and a combined method of segmentation. The key datasets used in this study are images provided by the Project for Palm Leaf Preservation, Northeastern Thailand Division, and benchmark datasets from the Document Image Binarisation Contest (DIBCO) series are used to compare the results of this work against other binarisation techniques. The experimental results have shown that the proposed methods in this study provide superior performance and will be used to support subsequent processing of the Thai ancient palm leaf documents. It is expected that the contributions from this study will also benefit research work on ancient manuscripts in other languages

    Contribution à l'analyse de la dynamique des écritures anciennes pour l'aide à l'expertise paléographique

    Mes travaux de thèse s inscrivent dans le cadre du projet ANR GRAPHEM1 (Graphemebased Retrieval and Analysis for PaleograpHic Expertise of Middle Age Manuscripts). Ilsprésentent une contribution méthodologique applicable à l'analyse automatique des écrituresanciennes pour assister les experts en paléographie dans le délicat travail d étude et dedéchiffrage des écritures.L objectif principal est de contribuer à une instrumetation du corpus des manuscritsmédiévaux détenus par l Institut de Recherche en Histoire des Textes (IRHT Paris) en aidantles paléographes spécialisés dans ce domaine dans leur travail de compréhension de l évolutiondes formes de l écriture par la mise en place de méthodes efficaces d accès au contenu desmanuscrits reposant sur une analyse fine des formes décrites sous la formes de petits fragments(les graphèmes). Dans mes travaux de doctorats, j ai choisi d étudier la dynamique del élément le plus basique de l écriture appelé le ductus2 et qui d après les paléographes apportebeaucoup d informations sur le style d écriture et l époque d élaboration du manuscrit.Mes contributions majeures se situent à deux niveaux : une première étape de prétraitementdes images fortement dégradées assurant une décomposition optimale des formes en graphèmescontenant l information du ductus. Pour cette étape de décomposition des manuscrits, nousavons procédé à la mise en place d une méthodologie complète de suivi de traits à partir del extraction d un squelette obtenu à partir de procédures de rehaussement de contraste et dediffusion de gradients. Le suivi complet du tracé a été obtenu à partir de l application des règlesfondamentales d exécution des traits d écriture, enseignées aux copistes du Moyen Age. Il s agitd information de dynamique de formation des traits portant essentiellement sur des indicationsde directions privilégiées.Dans une seconde étape, nous avons cherché à caractériser ces graphèmes par desdescripteurs de formes visuelles compréhensibles à la fois par les paléographes et lesinformaticiens et garantissant une représentation la plus complète possible de l écriture d unpoint de vue géométrique et morphologique. A partir de cette caractérisation, nous avonsproposé une approche de clustering assurant un regroupement des graphèmes en classeshomogènes par l utilisation d un algorithme de classification non-supervisé basée sur lacoloration de graphe. Le résultat du clustering des graphèmes a conduit à la formation dedictionnaires de formes caractérisant de manière individuelle et discriminante chaque manuscrittraité. Nous avons également étudié la puissance discriminatoire de ces descripteurs afin d obtenir la meilleure représentation d un manuscrit en dictionnaire de formes. Cette étude a étéfaite en exploitant les algorithmes génétiques par leur capacité à produire de bonne sélection decaractéristiques.L ensemble de ces contributions a été testé à partir d une application CBIR sur trois bases demanuscrits dont deux médiévales (manuscrits de la base d Oxford et manuscrits de l IRHT, baseprincipale du projet), et une base comprenant de manuscrits contemporains utilisée lors de lacompétition d identification de scripteurs d ICDAR 2011. L exploitation de notre méthode dedescription et de classification a été faite sur une base contemporaine afin de positionner notrecontribution par rapport aux autres travaux relevant du domaine de l identification d écritures etétudier son pouvoir de généralisation à d autres types de documents. Les résultats trèsencourageants que nous avons obtenus sur les bases médiévales et la base contemporaine, ontmontré la robustesse de notre approche aux variations de formes et de styles et son caractèrerésolument généralisable à tout type de documents écrits.My thesis work is part of the ANR GRAPHEM Project (Grapheme based Retrieval andAnalysis for Expertise paleographic Manuscripts of Middle Age). It represents a methodologicalcontribution applicable to the automatic analysis of ancient writings to assist the experts inpaleography in the delicate work of the studying and deciphering the writing.The main objective is to contribute to an instrumentation of the corpus of medievalmanuscripts held by Institut de Recherche en Histoire de Textes (IRHT-Paris), by helping thepaleographers specialized in this field in their work of understanding the evolution of forms inthe writing, with the establishment of effective methods to access the contents of manuscriptsbased on a fine analysis of the forms described in the form of small fragments (graphemes). Inmy PhD work, I chose to study the dynamic of the most basic element of the writing called theductus and which according to the paleographers, brings a lot of information on the style ofwriting and the era of the elaboration of the manuscript.My major contribution is situated at two levels: a first step of preprocessing of severelydegraded images to ensure an optimal decomposition of the forms into graphemes containingthe ductus information. For this decomposition step of manuscripts, we have proceeded to theestablishment of a complete methodology for the tracings of strokes by the extraction of theskeleton obtained from the contrast enhancement and the diffusion of the gradient procedures.The complete tracking of the strokes was obtained from the application of fundamentalexecution rules of the strokes taught to the scribes of the Middle Ages. It is related to thedynamic information of the formation of strokes focusing essentially on indications of theprivileged directions.In a second step, we have tried to characterize the graphemes by visual shape descriptorsunderstandable by both the computer scientists and the paleographers and thus unsuring themost complete possible representation of the wrting from a geometrical and morphological pointof view. From this characterization, we have have proposed a clustering approach insuring agrouping of graphemes into homogeneous classes by using a non-supervised classificationalgorithm based on the graph coloring. The result of the clustering of graphemes led to theformation of a codebook characterizing in an individual and discriminating way each processedmanuscript. We have also studied the discriminating power of the descriptors in order to obtaina better representation of a manuscript into a codebook. This study was done by exploiting thegenetic algorithms by their ability to produce a good feature selection.The set of the contributions was tested from a CBIR application on three databases ofmanuscripts including two medieval databases (manuscripts from the Oxford and IRHTdatabases), and database of containing contemporary manuscripts used in the writersidentification contest of ICDAR 2011. The exploitation of our description and classificationmethod was applied on a cotemporary database in order to position our contribution withrespect to other relevant works in the writrings identification domain and study itsgeneralization power to other types of manuscripts. The very encouraging results that weobtained on the medieval and contemporary databases, showed the robustness of our approachto the variations of the shapes and styles and its resolutely generalized character to all types ofhandwritten documents.PARIS5-Bibliotheque electronique (751069902) / SudocSudocFranceF

    Informatisation d'une forme graphique des Langues des Signes : application au système d'écriture SignWriting

    Les recherches et les logiciels présentés dans cette étude s'adressent à une importante minorité au sein de notre société, à savoir la communauté des sourdes. De nombreuses recherches démontrent que les sourdes se heurtent à de grosses difficultés avec la langue vocale, ce qui explique pourquoi la plu- part d'entre eux préfère communiquer dans la langue des signes. Du point de vue des sciences de l'information, les LS constituent un groupe de minorités linguistiques peu représentées dans l'univers du numérique. Et, de fait, les sourds sont les sujets les plus touchés par la fracture numérique. Cette étude veut donc être une contribution pour tenter de resserrer cette fracture numérique qui pénalise les sourdes. Pour ce faire, nous nous sommes principalement concentrés sur l'informatisation de SignWriting, qui constitue l'un des systèmes les plus prometteurs pour écrire la LS.The studies and the software presented in this work are addressed to a relevant minority of our society, namely deaf people. Many studies demonstrate that, for several reasons, deaf people experience significant difficulties in exploiting a Vocal Language (VL English, Chinese, etc.). In fact, many of them prefer to communicate using Sign Language (SL). As computer scientists, we observed that SLs are currently a set of underrepresented linguistic minorities in the digital world. As a matter of fact, deaf people are among those individuals which are mostly affected by the digital divide. This work is our contribution towards leveling the digital divide affecting deaf people. In particular, we focused on the computer handling of SignWriting, which is one of the most promising systems devised to write SLs
